I don't wear a helmet because I don't have one, also there's not much traffic here. When I go on longer trips I always wear one though.

Where I used to live it wasn't really necessary. As long as you didn't ride your bike in the street when there was a lot of traffic, the chances of you getting in accident were low. Normally, I'd just hop on my bike and ride for 10-15 minutes to a friend's house or the store. I'd usually ride on the sidewalk or close to the edge of the street, and the cars would always go around. But when I'm on a motorcycle or ATV, I always wear a helmet. If I'm going to riding somewhere with heavy traffic, I always wear a helmet. If I'm doing something that might result in me falling, I wear one. But if it's just a casual ride to a friend's house, then probably not.

But, now if I want to ride a bike where I live now, I have to wear a helmet always. The streets here are so full of potholes. The sidewalks are all kinds of fucked up. A lot of the streets are like / and \, so I need a helmet when I'm riding down one of those streets, just in case I can't break in time before heading into a street with heavy traffic. Also, the traffic here don't give a rat's ass about people on bikes. I swear, if a car hit a person on a bike, the person in the car would find some way to blame it on the person riding the bike.

OK, tell whoever you were talking to that they are an idiot. Tell him that when he cracks his skull because he didn't want to look like a fag, how is that going to matter when you can't function because you have some sort of nerve or brain damage.

Also, they do make new helmets that look fairly decent.

I said no, though, because I havent rode a bike in years.
Whilst I never wore a helmet myself, I think this post is great.

The reason being is that safety gear when I was younger was really bulky and caused more accidents than prevented. The only time I wore a helmet it had a habit of slipping onto my eyes, at which point I collided with a lamp-post.

Never wore them again.
That's why you wear helmets correctly.

OT: I wear a helmet because it protects my head. Enough said.
Your friend sounds insecure about his sexuality.

i don't ride a bicycle but i do ride in motorcycle and yes i say HELMETS FOR ALL!

you can get helmets that don't look ridiculous but i would prefer looking like a retard then having to learn how to put on socks again or how to use a spoon.
Pretty much this. I'd rather look stupid and have working brain functions then look cool and end up with brain damage.

I haven't ridden a bike in a long while. However if I did, I would definitely get helmet.

Not for short distances but otherwise yea.

Yeah, I know it looks a wee bit dorky, but I doubt people look at me and say "Hey! That guy would look so awesome on his bicycle, if only he didn't wear that helmet" :p

oh jeez, I wonder if anyone at my uni has died of a bike accident, there's not one out of the dozens I see a day that wear a helmet. I will probably, if I ever ride a bike there. i didn't last time I was on a bike, so probably not. I bought one and it works just fine, just keep forgetting about it. You'd think it'd be like a seatbelt with me(I always have one on) but it just hasn't clicked.

If I'm on a motorcycle (say I'm playing a children's card game), I'll always wear a helmet. I've got a pretty sweet Ace McCloud helmet that in no way looks faggy for just such occasions. I'd also wear one if I was doing BMX or Motocross. However, I never wear one when I'm just riding around on my bicycle. I know I should and I know I could end up regretting it eventually, but I always hated them when I was a kid. I was forced by law to wear one until I turned 16 and haven't since. I thought I'd be past that kind of teenage rebellion by now but I'm not. Whatever.

My physics professor calls people who don't wear helmets when riding a motorcycle "Organ Donors"

I think that pretty much sums up my whole viewpoint on this

You can either be dead, or "look like a fag", which is another way of saying, "be extremely insecure about it, but still be alive".

He thought it wasn't worth it "Because it makes you look like a fag." So I thought I'd put up a poll and see what the Escapist thinks. Feel free to discuss bike helmets and the percieved fagginess thereof.
At the risk of being punished by the power hungry people I will speak my mind.

Wait until he falls and then hurts himself....then see who the REAL "fag" is.

If you wear a helmet.....then Congratulations!!! You are smarter then the dimwits who do not and therefore you have nothing to worry about.

If you do NOT wear a helmet......Smarten the heck up. Accidents DO happen and no matter how careful you are sooner or later you WILL get hurt...and you could have prevented it. You got what you deserved.

AND WEAR THEM PROPERLY!!! This means NOT pushed back on your head.

I wear a helmet all the time while biking...both on my Mountain Bike and my E-Bike.

One of my Mum's friends was hit by a car whilst on her bike. She wasn't injured but her bike helmet was cracked in two right down the centre. The Paramedics told her if she hadn't been wearing a helmet it would have been her skull that had split in two. D:

What sort of pussy are you? If you start wearing bike helmets, the next thing you know you'll start wearing seat belts and using condoms, and stop sharing hypodermic needles with your friends down the street.
