Yesterday, I got in a conversation with a guy from school about whether wearing a bike helmet is worth it. I thought it was worth it, since it's not a big deal and it can save your life, which mine has. He thought it wasn't worth it "Because it makes you look like a fag." So I thought I'd put up a poll and see what the Escapist thinks. Feel free to discuss bike helmets and the percieved fagginess thereof.

I don't know how to respond respectfully, just a second.

.....

OK, tell whoever you were talking to that they are an idiot. Tell him that when he cracks his skull because he didn't want to look like a fag, how is that going to matter when you can't function because you have some sort of nerve or brain damage.

Also, they do make new helmets that look fairly decent.

I said no, though, because I havent rode a bike in years.

Wearing a helmet makes you look like a cigarette? What sort of helmets do you wear?

Crashing without one makes you look like a corpse, usually because you are one.

Okay, granted I didn't actually read the OP, but in answer to the question at hand, No, I don't wear a helmut. I never felt that they offered enough protection to be worth it. Besides that, if I'm on a bike and I get hit by a motorcycle or a car, it's not going to save me. Everything else is avoidable or negotiable.

For that matter, the same goes for elbow pads and knee pads. Yes, they will keep you from getting a big, bad scrape. If it's bad enough, it might even draw blood. But the protection they offer is superficial. Real injuries, like I dunno, a dislocated patella, aren't going to be stopped by some simple kneepads.

They're guaranteed to improve safety by I think it's 70%, up to 30mph, but if you go any faster than that, then they don't have to do anything. But yeah, they do do tests on these kinds of things, and they're absolutely worth it.

k, one subject i have exp on, i got in a crash in 4th grade, fell into the only yard with shells, had a massive concussion, didnt remember that whole day, later, when they thought i'd be calm enough to tell me without freaking out, they told me that i wouldn't be alive today without that helmet in the way between my head and cement and shells

my lid has saved my head a few times... i think wearing a helmet is worth it so long as the helmet itself isn't a faggy one.

I generally do, if I ever rode bikes anymore. I've known far too many people come off bikes without helmets and then spend months in intensive care because they effectively sanded their faces off on the road. One guy the year above me at school came off his bike onto gravel once, minus helmet, and when he came back he wasn't even recognisable as the same boy his face and head had been so mashed up. Apparently he did something weird to his neck as well, so he has to wear a neck brace all his life.

Wear a helmet kiddies, because no matter their overall effectiveness, wearing one is more effective than not wearing one.

Yes I wear one but only because I would get fined if I did not.
Personally if given the choice I would not bother. Yes it could save your life if you are hit, but since if you do get hit it is going to be a body shot from a speeding chunk of heavy metal chances are the helmet wont do jack shit. Not to mention that if say you do fall on your head it may save your life but chances are you will just end up snapping your neck instead and thus even if you do survive will be left a cripple.
I think you're underestimating the durability of the body, and overestimating that of the brain. The body can recover to some extent from basically anything that doesn't destroy entire functions, but brain cells don't grow back. Plus you're arguing that being a cripple is on par with severe brain damage, which I disagree with. I'd much rather be a quadruplegic whose brain still functions normally than an otherwise undamaged vegetable.
