Weve had this subject many many times. Possible involving any new MMO that was released in the past 4 years. They ended up not doing anything to WoW and some even shut down.

Trust me, I know how that is, thats what I thought about WAR, but I still went back to WoW, my next option DC universe online... I'll probably still end back up with WoW though

In the ongoing storyline of MMO's, WoW is the big, ruggedly handsome hero who occasionally is stalled in his quest, but always keeps getting stronger. The other MMO's range from resembling Golem to Picard's new g/f, but they always die off in the end.

While this looks like a VERY cool game, and an intresting expirement in the removal of the classic grind, it will NOT be a WoW killer. Not even close.

Had a quick gander of the website for that game and well, first impressions are of a game that may be moderately successful but from what I've seen it just looks a little too bland to imagine it having any real impact.

It certainly looks the part as far as the quality of the visuals is concerned but it doesn't really seem distinctive enough to make that much of an impact although it will probably gain some degree of a following.

I think it will take something quite special to knock WoW off it's throne. It's unlikely that this is it.

I haven't even heard of the game, so how can it hurt WoW? Everyone said Warhammer Online would be the WoW killing, but it's still growing.

Aside from being a fantasy MMO there's no real connection to WoW. It's a 1st person real-time combat. WoW is 3rd person turn based combat. Also the graphics aren't that much greater than WoW. A little less "cartoony", but nothing major.

Remember how many games have "threatened" WoW? Guild Wars, LOTRO, DDO, etc.? I guess WoW is unique. I didn't play it for long (compared to some of you freaks out there :p), but people are absolutely hooked on the stuff. And honestly, this Mortal thing doesn't look too awesome.

I'm not sure if WoW can be stopped right now. But look ahead to the future. I think that The Old Republic will cause a perfect storm for WoW. First off, the new content introduced by WotLK will have turned stale for many gamers by the time TOR hits the shelves. Secondly, BioWare and KotOR have a gigantic fan base (myself included!) who will flock to the next chapter of the KotOR series.

I think that of all the MMO's that have been released or are in production right now, TOR has the only chance of taking on WoW. It even may not supplant it as the #1 MMO of all time, but it will definitely threaten it. All TOR has to do is avoid the utter failures of SW:G to become a truly epic MMO.
You sound like a war/aoc/tr/dfo/lotro player a few years back and we all know how "threatening" they turned out to be. Bioware isn't going to do what others couldn't by the grace of you liking them, just like war's collosal failure wasn't migitated by it's excessively vocal community.

I think for a game to be a WoW-killer, it will have to be enough like WoW to attract its players. If it is too different, it won't appeal to the WoW fans.

BUT. *If* this new game is too much like WoW, then WoW's players will stick with WoW because 1) they have already invested quite a lot of time and money in their high-level characters and 2) they've made friends and aquaintances on WoW.

It's not very appealing to start over and give up both of those two things.

I think WoW will be here for a long time (and I'm a DDO fan).

I can think of at least 20 games that were supposed to "dethrone WoW" when they came out. I think maybe one or two of that 20 even have servers online still, and the ones that do have under 1 million active players apiece.

So in short, probably not.

I don't really care but I will say this:
It will have to be a really fucking good game to topple the behemoth that is WoW.

Of course, you're right. One person's like for a dev won't turn the tide against WoW.

But it's not just me. Ask anyone what their top 10 games are, and you can bet that most of them will have KOTOR on that list. On the dev site, they said that TOR will have more story content than all other BioWare games put together. Do you know what they're claiming? We're talking hundreds of hours of story per class. And each story will be different; each class (neither side shares them) is getting its own KOTOR. This is a narrative MMO, something much different than anything to come before it. Besides, a bad Star Wars MMO has already been made, and there is no better teacher than failure.

I'm sure you think me an idealist, but I think that my faith in TOR will be justified when it comes out.

Mortal Online won't kill WoW. It's a totally different MMO then WoW is, a FFA-PVP full loot first person sandbox MMO. Almost the opposite of what WoW is.

I looked it up really quick... and no. Easily no.

It looks more like a Elder Scrolls game online than a typical MMO.
LMAO

almost thought this was sarcasm. an elder scrolls MMO is the best type of MMO there could be and a typical MMO is the worst.

Being an avid ex-lurker of the WoW forums, I can tell you that almost every MMO that has come out since WoW has been deemed the WoW killer. None have succeeded is putting a dent into the subscriber base.

Regardless of anyone's preference, what I'm saying is that this is not a WoW substitute. It's not even the same type of game.

There's just one thing that people tend to forget. You very rarely leave what you really really like. And when you try something else for a spin, you seldomly will have a real open mind and will compare it to what you like (this doesn't only apply to games either) If you have started your MMORPG time playing DDO, then to you DDO is what started it all, you started with WOW, that all pales in comparison to that, noone can help comparing to what they know. You get used to a certain playstyle.

The funniest thing of it all is that people then tend to complain in two contradicting ways, as an example I will use WOW here as the game someone came from and started to play LOTRO to give it a spin...see if you can recognize this for another game:

"Meh, this is just a WoW clone, might as well play WoW then as it is the same"

"How can I find [INSERT MOB NAME HERE]? He is not indicated on my map!"
LOTRO player: "Read the quest description, you will find a good indication there"
"Meh, can't I install the TOM TOM plugin like in WoW to help me find it?"

See a pattern here?

So clearly, no! Mortal Online won't be a WoW killer, nor will any other game you will ever play if you are deep into that game. For me the same is true for other games and WoW never did it for me at all. Certainly a new game will never ever have the polished look you have come to expect from your personal favorite, be it WoW, LOTRO, DDO, EQ or anything else you like. ;)
Hehe. I started at Star Wars: Galaxies. I would never call that one the pinnacle of MMO development for me ;)

Yeah, what he said. No matter what game you go to, if you have been tinged in some way by the previous game you will always compare it. Not just MMOs...I'm a huge fan of those games that let you control a marble and move it around an enviroment of some sort. I started in that genre with a jewel of a game called Ballance. No other game that I have tried comes close to it.

The whole impression thing works on an inverse level, also. I remember a gentleman who came to LOTRO from WoW on the Silverlode server. He had an awful experience in WoW; supposedly receiving death threats and the general lovely oh so mature language/interactions you get when your game is primarily played by teens. He was so tainted that when he gave LOTRO a whirl (mind you, we are known at LOTRO for being a generally mature and friendly community...I'm not just blowing smoke, here. Even this gentleman mentioned in his post that he had heard this about us) he got so fed up that he ranted on the forums for days about what an awful community we are, etc. That man went on to another game and repeated his pattern of rather rude posting there, too. No matter what, you're gonna be tainted. Just enjoy your game :)
