Poll: Is WoW getting a run for its money?

Love it or hate it, WoW will be the king of MMO's for the next foreseeable future. It over took the MMO market by storm, and with that many people, even hoards could leave and they would still be king of the hill.

But one can always hope they plunge into the fiery pits of hell

I reckon when Star Trek Online, comes out, it could steal a lot of the Hardcore Nerds.

Now that's a game that'll be interesting to see how it'll do!

Methinks WOW will be around for awhile. It will die eventually, but not for awhile. There are too many people, (myself included) that are addicted to the game. The lore and combat are awesome, even if most of the community...special. WOW will live on for a few more years at least. For every veteran who quits WoW, four noobs will pop up to replace him.
On a side note, I no longer play WoW out of choice. I purposely didn't bring WoW with me to college so I could make friends and have some co-ed relations *wink*. Oh and learn stuff too. That's important. But sometimes I think to myself, "Man, I really feel like raiding something."

I recently realised that WoW is boring and cancelled my subscription. It's just an excuse for people to outdo each other. "NO MY SWORD IS BETTER!" Who cares?

WoW has such easy requirements though, thats why everybody and their mother plays it. All these new MMOs require so much computer power that the normal PC or laptop cant handle them. IF they wan to a WoW killer then stop making it with awesome graphics because obviously not alot of people who pay for MMOs care

It isn't cartoony enough; probably won't sell. It's been a big 12 months for PVP-centric MMORPG's that have flopped spectacularly. Gear-centric raiding is just the easiest way to keep people interested in said MMORPG's.

Bah. WoW will fall when it's time. Its starting to get in its mid-age I believe since it has released a lot of expansions, content unused, and graphics that are beginning to be old. Other MMO's are starting to show progress, but WoW is simply too well known and large enough to stand tall for a little more time, plus a community that is completely addicted to it that it will still be populated for years and years even if there may be better ones out there.
What the other MMO's need is good advertisement, a great development team that listens to the public, balancing and updates, great release, and a fantasy that will suck people in, with great graphics to help the eye. The other MMO's around have failed in a couple of these things but I consider them trial and error until a company that's been seeing how they failed and such comes up with something that will gain at least a close amount of the popularity that WoW had.

When that MMO comes out many will hate it just like they did WoW and we begin everything again saying its the best thing ever and no other MMO will topple it... again.

Anyway if you want to leave it so be it, just remember don't think you will always be in WoW forever saying everything else sucks. Start looking at other things and keep an open mind and an eye on the development of other MMO's.

I'm not a big MMO fan; more of a twitchy gameplay kind of person. I'm willing to admit WoW is about as good as MMOs get though. WoW will end when blizzard says it ends/release a sequal.

My kid played WoW for a couple of weeks. Her boyfriend paid her subscription, lol. Anyway, she said she thought it got boring. So they moved on to Runescape and then to Guild Wars, and neither of those held her either. I think she's not really MMO player material (too impatient). Currently, she's playing the Diablo series in multiplayer mode, and seems to like that more.

I play DDO which is a game that has uses the Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 ruleset and Eberron setting, high end graphics, built in voice-chat, a more FPS realtime action combat mechanic, and tends to require grouping to get stuff done. It also doesn't have kill x number of y type quests where you wait for stuff to respawn. I'm guessing that WoW's average player age might be low twenties, while I'm more in my zone if the average player age is mid thirties. I was completely resistant to the idea of MMOs until DDO came out. Until that point it shocked me that anyone would want to buy a game, and then keep paying! It took a niche game like DDO to bring me into the MMO market.

Blizzard's gonna be around for years and years; I don't see them going anywhere. My final assessment; no new MMO's are gonna trump WoW's performance. The WoW brand is just too strong to be eclipsed.

We'll have to wait and see!

When you are talking about a game that is going to beat wow or come close to wows numbers a no name company will not do it.

Two things that you need.

A company that has the backing and history with a strong fan base.
A type of mmorpg brand that also has a huge following.

Now ask yourself who could this be? Nothing? Wrong...

Nothing will ever kill WoW. The best thing developers can hope to do is create a popular, but completely different mmo. Take EVE for instance. EVE is still gaining subscribers while WAR and AoC are losing them and shutting down servers. That's because WAR and AoC tried to beat WoW at its own game while EVE is just trying to carve a nice little niche for itself. Why won't the developers learn. Blizzard has a monopoly on that kind of game, it's time to try something completely different.

WAR was meant to be a rival to WoW......it wasn't. If this game is meant to be a rival to WoW, it won't be. thats that really. Now, if WAR came out when it was meant to waaay back in like 2002 or w/e then it would have survived and WoW would have been the new kid trying to make waves, but thats life

I can only hope so because WoW won't just die they'll just make it better.

It won't die, but WoW's been progressively getting worse since the Burning Crusade, but I haven't played since a year after BC was released, so I can't say anything about Wrath.

I doubt one game can kill WoW. It will probably take WoW finally losing steam or alot of new MMOs that become popular and peel players away from WoW.

To answer the question can another mmo give wow a run for its money I'll answer simply not if it tries to emulate it. If a game comes out thats very different then it could be another story.

Atm there's only one fantasy mmo out there that isnt in some way a wow clone and thats DDO. Unfortunately its also the victim of the worst marketing thats ever been known to a game so it could never compete. If another game was released as different but marketed well I honestly believe at that point the juggernaught could get some serious competition.

As to whether a game could kill wow then I would say no as for the same reasons wow didnt actually kill everquest "game x" wont kill wow. The hardcore population will allways keep enough life in any game.

Now to the specifics of will mortal compete and I would say unlikely as it doesnt seem to be getting the awareness at this point that even DDO was getting. If it does turn out to be different enough tho and the marketing picks up as release draws near anything is possible.

I personally will hope it does well just for the sake of variety (and something that apes elder scrolls will definately peek my interest) and if it is different enough will probably give it a good run just to get another non wow style game a place in the market (I'm sure I cant be alone wishing that every mmo that comes out wasnt an inferior wow clone).

WoW appreals to your twitchy gameplay style??? Guildwars and DDO are the only ones out there with twitch style/FPS feel to their game (DDO as of Mod 9. will have a First Person option)

Well it depends if it has a monthly fee that is less than wow then put wow on a portable hard drive and throw it out a window off a 80 story building in to a crack in the earths surface. And throw some sprinkles too!
