Fuck all that shit, once Diablo 3 comes out online mumorpergers will no longer matter because D3 will dominate all competition.

Unless Blizzard decides to charge for Diablo 3 online, in which case me and hundreds of thousands of pissed off rage filled fans will storm their headquarters, kill all but the server techies, and force them to run the servers so we can all bask in free, fun, gore filled dungeon raiding and PvP without having to hand over 15 bucks a month.

WoW couldn't kill EverQuest. Warhammer OL couldn't kill WoW. See a pattern?
Wow couldn't kill Everquest? Please explain how WoW didn't kill Everquest?
Everquest was dying long before WoW. It was the script-kiddies that killed it...for me at least.

People still play it now though. (Albeit only a very few)

I started WOW rather late, BC had been out for several months, and LK was on the horizon. A year and a half later, I have a level 80, a bunch of alts, and I feel as though I can't enjoy it as much as I used to.

Unless you've been there since the beginning (2004, like my roommate has) it's kinda lost a lot of steam, and not really worth starting or continuing.

If blizzard is DUMB enough to give Diablo 3 OR Starcraft II a monthly fee then basically they will lose over half of their players/supporters.

When you are talking about a game that is going to beat wow or come close to wows numbers a no name company will not do it.

Two things that you need.

A company that has the backing and history with a strong fan base.
A type of mmorpg brand that also has a huge following.

Now ask yourself who could this be? Nothing? Wrong...

Bioware+Knights of the Old Republic Online=winner
You guys are going to be the new warhammer fanatics, aren't you? I already adressed exactly the same point earlier in the thread.

I'm not a big MMO fan; more of a twitchy gameplay kind of person. I'm willing to admit WoW is about as good as MMOs get though. WoW will end when blizzard says it ends/release a sequal.
WoW appreals to your twitchy gameplay style??? Guildwars and DDO are the only ones out there with twitch style/FPS feel to their game (DDO as of Mod 9. will have a First Person option)
I didn't say it appeals to me. Just that even though I don't like MMOs I know that WoW is as good as it gets for them.

I am fairly certain Yahtzee said the same thing. I think.

DDO as First Person would likely play about as well as playing catch with horse apples. I'll be surprised if that works.

I really dont know what criteria Blizzard uses for their subscription numbers, I at least hardly know anyone who bought WoTLK; Granted, most of the people I knew who played the game started in 2004/5 and played the level 60 game.

For me, WoW seems to be running short on good ideas for to keep the game going. Blizzard's forte has never been originality. They excel in taking ideas which have been done before and executing them with excellent panache. I got really jaded after 40 man raids went away, and havent played seriously since.

Also, their art direction has continued to nosedive. I remember the technicolor look of original wow being something really timeless and magical that perfectly complemented its epic scope. After the nightmare of TBC's uninspired visuals and awful color palette, it seems like its only gotten worse.

I looked it up really quick... and no. Easily no.

It looks more like a Elder Scrolls game online than a typical MMO.
LMAO

almost thought this was sarcasm. an elder scrolls MMO is the best type of MMO there could be and a typical MMO is the worst.
Regardless of anyone's preference, what I'm saying is that this is not a WoW substitute. It's not even the same type of game.
I agree but that's not a reason for it not to succeed, in fact the opposite. if anything is going to do well in the current mmo market its something different from its competitors, ie not another wow clone. I'm not another naive fan who thinks it will "kill wow", nothing will, a MMO doesn't have to beat wow to succeed. people need to stop obsessing with wow.
I only say that because most people who play WoW like magic and high fantasy and hyperbole in their games. They want to be uber, etc. This game doesn't seem to quite offer the same thing. It doesn't mean it won't be successful. It just means it will probably not appeal to the same crowd. WoW did not appeal to every crowd either. Older games like FFXI are still pretty successful.

MMOs are fragile... one wrong move ruins the whole game... and even if you fix it... the lost rep and player base means youll probably never recover...

it would take a lot to down wow, as having a big community = more people joining...

The Chrinicles of Spellborn has a much better combat system... and an interesting take on equipment... unfortunately its being run by acclaim...

Aion: Tower of Eternity... ive got my eye on this... very pretty graphics, otherwise a generic yet still refreshing mmo... best feature though... decent character creation!

theres plently out there... and if people would take the time to look... wow would already be dead...

Although I'd love for some of the ever-present 14 million players to play something else (LotRO, anybody?) i can't say I blame them for having a good time.
Also, blood-elves. Cooooooooollll.

They said the same thing for Warhammer and AoC. Half the players came back within the first week.
The majority of WoW players would rather stick with WoW because they have a solid foundation and plenty of connections. To jump into a new game is starting over and possible failing epicly.

Well all I can say here is go give the trial a go. Quite a few players that had very negative views on DDO have tried it over the last couple of weeks and most seem to be enjoying themselves. For this game I really must say that you shouldnt knock it till you have tried it.

Now as for wow being the best.... Tbh I think thats a bit of an eroneus statement. The main thing wow has had pushing it is a combination of blizzards rep combined with the greatest marketing force I think any game has ever had. As others have mentioned before in this thread the juggernaught does seem to be slowly losing steam and if a couple of companies were brave enough to release something a bit different and then market it well I dont think wow's numbers would be quite as safe as they seem.

Atm I think the big threat to wow will be Bioware's mmo when it is released if not Bethesdas'. Both companies have as good a reputation as Blizzard and could quite easily strip wow of half its playerbase within a month. For my oppinion I just hope whatever they release is as high quality as the rest of their products.

The only MMOs with the potential to put a 'dent', if you could call it that, in WoW's playerbase is the new Bioware Star Wars MMO, and Blizzard's upcoming MMO that's currently in development. Honestly though, let's say Blizzard loses a million or two subscribers to Bioware's MMO. Okay, so that's a dent. But is it enough to topple WoW? Hell no. That still means they have around 10 million Subscribers or so, not to mention those who will play both MMOs. Regardless, WoW will probably stay on top for another decade or so I'd imagine. y then the new Blizz MMO will be on top and be the new craze.
