Poll: Is WoW worth it?

Guildwars is free, has better graphics, and is generally nicer to play. So I don't think that WoW is worth it. Just get all of the guildwars campaigns for £15 - or the relative cost in dollars 
(I have played WoW, for a few months, and it wasn't my cuppa tea. I was fairly good at it, so don't say that I didn't enjoy it because I was shit at it.)

It's a game you have to like I guess. I tried it and even though I'm a big fan of all kinds of RPG's (including MMORPGs) I didn't like WoW much. I got up to level 38, from then on I just couldn't bother with the grind anymore. But was it worth my $20? Hell yeah, it was an experience on it's own and I'm glad I played it.
For me, it's worth it because I have friends in the game. It's nice having people to play with. I'd advise getting one of the ten-day trial cards, seeing how you like it first. That's how I got into it.
There is a 10 day free trial you can download which would be the best way to see if you like it.

If you're worried about the monthly cost, think about it like this:
If you go to the cinema you get like 2 hours of entertainment, it cost about as much as one month's subscription to an MMORPG (in Sweden anyways). If you play an hour a day you get 30 hours. It's not that bad a deal if you happen to like the game.

I played WoW for 5 years, and I was arguably not an "addiction case" for all but a few months of that time. Actually, my WoW account is currently active, but I am seriously considering cancelling it for good depending upon certain outside factors and how those turn out. I, to put it simply, have grown beyond WoW and MMO games in general, which is making my interest in playing that game diminish to nothing.
I guess what i'm saying is that its a game that can be fun to play, as it has been for me in the past. But... its not for everyone, and I personally believe that the game's "golden age" has passed.

It's fine if you have friends who will be leveling with you, but honestly I find it really boring playing the game by myself.
Is it a fun game to play now and then with friends? ; yes. Does this make it worth the cost? No =).
Variety is the spice of life. Don't go near World of Warcraft. Not only is it bland, it's also addictive.

Unless you like grinding up to max level and then grinding the same dungeons 50+ times to get gear with about 5 extra stats on the be able to grind a new dungeon it isn't really worth it.

It is definatly worth the 30day trial but playing the game long term depends on who you meet.
If you end up playing alone with only a handful of friends, you wont really get much out of it. However if you do get yourself into a fun guild and meet some new friends, then hell yes

In long: No, because it is a massive waste of time. I can practically guarantee that you'll be hooked on the game, either because you somehow find the grind enjoyable or because your guildmates force you to keep playing. When I look back on my time with it, all I remember is wasting hundreds of hours for nothing. Honestly, look for another game, or better yet, another genre.

Get the trial, I'd say. But honestly, starting right now probably isn't a great idea; the vanilla content is a complete ghost town these days, because no one wants to level a new alt before Cataclysm launches.
Once that comes out, you'll probably find it a LOT easier to find groups, join a guild, and generally meet a bunch of cool people.
EDIT: Also, as you might've gathered from some of the above posters, it's possible to get really really addicted to it. It depends on your personality and circumstances. For example, I can normally put it down and walk away for a few weeks (or months) without any problem, but I did have a pretty bad period of addiction for a couple of months after I got laid off from an old job. So be warned.
Once that comes out, you'll probably find it a LOT easier to find groups, join a guild, and generally meet a bunch of cool people.

I put off playing WoW until earlier this year (I'm an avid MMO gamer and it never appealed to me), and I have to say that it's really not that great. Character customization is barely existent (you wear whatever drops that's a higher level and at high end there is always a 'must-have' item that you're expected to wear), most of the content is out of your reach unless you're in a very active and high-end guild, and the path to 80 can only be described as 'tortuous'.
I did not get hooked, and honestly I've played more engaging free-to-play games.
