Poll: Is WoW worth it?

Play a trial, and see what you think. Personally, I think it's a shame that people are playing WoW, without a care in the world about all the other, arguably better, video games out there. Remember kids, MMO's aren't the only places to find social interactions. You can play multiplayer on most other games nowadays, AND they're more varied and fun. Or you could, you know, go outside and talk to people.

WoW has no more grinding then any other MMO. Its fun, its addictive, and there's good reason why 11.5 million people are playing.

It seems like a fun game If you like that kind of game (It's number 1 for a reason) but I'm not sure I could justify $15 a month to play it.

In terms of money, i can't imagine people get significantly more hours played, if any, per $ spent from any other game. I haven't played for a number of months, but according to my account management, i've paid a monthly subscription 35 times since the release of the game, 35 * (£)9 = £315. Plus the cost of the game and both expansions and a character transfer we can call it £400 in total spent on the game.

According to Xfire i've put 2023 hours into the game since it was installed.

2000/400 = 5 hours of game time for each GPB spent. If you can point me in the direction of a cinema where you can get a cinema ticket for less than £5 I'll eat my hat.

I paid £40 for CoD:MW2, and according to Xfire I've put 59 hours into it. For MW2 to have the same financial efficiency in terms of money spent of entertainment hours gained, I'd have had to have played 200 hours. Not a ridiculous amount, but for a game of such resounding shallowness it probably isn't too realistic to someone of my disposition.

Ultimately it comes down to how you play games, if you're someone who plays a lot and explores their games as well as getting involved in the community, the game isn't going to eat into your wallet any more than most other games. On the other hand, if you won't play it all that often, a few hours a week or so, you're going to end up paying a lot more than could be justified.

It's a neat distraction for a while, however you will likely eventually realize that despite all the content patches and class changes and whatnot, the game never really changes at all.

Matter of fact, i have no idea how people can play it for more than a few months without getting some sort of guild that raids crap, doing the same 7 or so 5 man instances with random idiots that rarely know what they're doing would drive me crazy.

As a Cata beta tester, if you're thinking Cataclysm is going to suddenly shift the game toward higher difficulty, I can say that I'm afraid you're in for a disappointment.

Your mileage may vary, but I'm on the side of yes. If you find a good guild, the type that works with you instead of expecting you to be an expert on every end game dungeon decked out with epics that plays ungodly amounts of hours, then the game is amazing. If you don't, you may find yourself at level 30 or 40 with no guild thinking how boring and stupid this is all by yourself.

The biggest obstacle to playing for you would probably be starting out at this late stage. The game has been out for a long time. I was playing when the game was released when it was a relatively even playing field. PvP was real, a gold made you rich, and no one had any idea what they were doing. Epic mounts were something I saw like once a week.

Now, a lot of players have two or three characters at the top level with a couple twinks, and everyone sort of expects everyone else to know what to do.

With the expansion, I'd suggest waiting to make and decisions, but you can try out a 10-day trial.

I've never understood that argument. I can rent a game for a week from Blockbuster for £6 or, for £9, I can play World of Warcraft for 30 days. A new DVD from Sainsbury's runs at about £9.99 and (depending on how good it is) you might get 10-15 watches out of it (if it's really, really, really good) at an hour and a half a time. Hell, a really, really, really good tub of Ice Cream runs at £3-4 and lasts a few hours, tops. World of Warcraft is, compared to many of life's little pleasures, really really cheap.

Honestly, I'd say wait for Cataclysm, then try a trial account. Join some teams, kill some monsters, craft some stuff, look around some areas, don't just grind quests - that's where the boredom comes in.

It really depends if you like MMOs or not. If you don't like World of Warcraft I doubt you'll like any other MMORPGs.
Otherwise I'd say you should check it out. I don't have a job and it isn't even that expensive.
And if you're worried about becoming addicted, don't be. I've been playing since Vanilla and it's not really a matter of being addicted, I just find the game fun like I would any other game.

May want to wait for Cataclysm though... Most of World of Warcraft's imperfections are being fixed come Cataclysm.

I play it, but I wouldn't say hell yes. You either know you're gonna like it in a trail so I would go with that first. Just make sure you don't have an addictive personality when it comes to such things >.>

Personally the game itself is perfectly fine. Really, as far as games themselves go Blizzard has a pretty flawless track record. The question is if you are willing to pay continuously for it. Me, personally, I played it for a few months but got bored of it, probably because I never joined any guilds, or because ADD is a great counter to addiction.

Get the trial, thats the best idea. Also ignore all the "Meh, WoW is a grind" sayers, they obviously have no idea what a grind is. Ive played for years, and I can honestly say, if you find you enjoy the game, the maths alone say that its worth the subcription. I will agree with people saying it's better with friends, but that's down to hoe social as a person you are. Yes it is quicker to level with friends, and generally more fun, but there is nothing stopping you from making friends in the game, and with any luck you'll meet some decent people.

Since I've played for a good few years, I've gotten bored of it for the time being, so I'm taking a sabbatical to play EvE online, another game, the as long as you have the patience and willingness to learn, is absolutely brilliant.


TLDR; Get the trial, make up your own mind.

If you like the game and get a lot of enjoyment out of it, then yes it's worth it. I just played for about 3 months, stopped again a few days ago, and that costed me about 40 euros. 3 Months worth of entertainment for 40 euros is pretty damn cheap, don't you think?

But if you don't actually like the game, then obviously it ain't worth it. Shame the trial doesn't touch the best content of the game, but I still recommend just trying that.

Or wait for the next expansion pack, that's what I would do. It revamps the early-level content, hopefully bringing it up to snuff with the Wrath of the Lich King content.

And a group of people to play with. From my experience, it's not a solo game. Pearl of a game though, the righteous kind of sandbox MMO's.

What everyone forgets is that you can play WoW for free. Just google Private WoW servers. it might take you a while to find one that you like, but its better to play for free than for $40(AU)/month in my opinion.

While it won't give you the full experience of Retail WoW, its good to play for free.

It's $20 AU a month if you buy timecards from EB Games or the like - a timecard is 40$ for two months. Plus you can simply subscribe with a creditcard and get it for the same price as Americans.

On topic: I'd say try a trial for it so you can see for yourself. I used to play, I didn't like where WoW was headed, so I no longer play; instead I play EVE and D&D Online (for my MMO fantasy fix).
