Well, my favourite bands are Clutch, The Protomen, Maximum the Hormone, Alestorm...

Alestorm!!! I must say this everytime someone says Clutch..."I FREAKING HATE CLUTCH!" I saw them live and I was sorely disappointed...damn country rock metal music... Thank god they weren't headlining and thank god for Children of Bodom and Black Label Society.

Since you said "band" I'll skip all of my favorite non-band artists, which make up most of the music I listen to.

And my favorite bands are Machinae Supremacy, Pendulum, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, and Boston so I answered no (except for Boston).

One of the bands I listen to atm is Five Finger Death Punch, and I've only met one other guy that knows them. So obscure enough I would say.
Seriously? They're pretty well known here. They were playing with lamb of god, rob zombie and korn at a large metal concert. They're pretty mainstream in metal standards.

Hands up if you've heard of Hurt, Funeral for a Friend or Fightstar.

That's what I thought.
I know Fightstar, kinda. all I know is they based an album off Evangelion. Which puts them high on the awesome list no matter their musical quality.

My favourite right now is Goldfrapp, not sure how well known they are everywhere else but where I live I'd say kinda to not really.

*Hands up*
I know Fightstar
I went to go see em a while back
They're ok but they're not amazing in my opinion
Hands for all of them

As for me, Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens and The National

Relatively popular, probably right on the line.

*damn it sorry wrong quote.

Infact I listen to very few bands that aren't very well known.

Well it's a true story ;) It may be due to the fact that I don't actually know people who listen to metal, and that most of my friends listen to the bland mainstream music that exists on the radio station they have tuned in to. The same goes for the punk bands I listen to like Millencolin, Bad Religion, NOFX etc. Pretty much no one knows them, but then again, it's their loss.

I don't even think I have a favourite artist. I guess if I made a list of artists, singers or groups where I like pretty much everything they've ever done, it would be limited to INXS (while Michael was still alive), Diana Ross And The Supremes, Eva Cassidy and Julie London. The first two go without saying; they're widely known and popular. Even people who have never heard their music probably know the name.

As for the others, Eva Cassidy's music is thankfully getting less obscure and gaining recognition, but, tragically, she died in 1996 before she ever got to see any of this, so unfortunately it's not like she's going to pull a Tupac and have a string of posthumous hits. Julie London meanwhile was a lounge singer and actress basically, covering the old standards, as you do, and I inevitably end up liking her versions way more than the originals. You may never have heard of her, but she was huge in the fifties; massive star at the time, unfortunately not remembered too well now. Funny how you can go from being ranked Billboard's favorite female vocalist three years running to having no one know who you are in the space of a couple of decades. But yeah; pretty famous.

Well I've got a bunch of really well known bands in my playlist and the two that I like most are currently Blind Guardian [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Lg2AAXaWCU]and Opeth [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSSLXMzxxP8Opeth] and I'am pretty sure that you at least heard of them if you are a metalhead...

I also have a sizable collection of fairly unknown bands[footnote]I thank Encyclopedia Metallum [http://www.metal-archives.com/] for most of them...[/footnote]. Here are some examples along with their corresponding genre:

Is Folk Metal so hard a concept to grasp!?

My most favorite bands are all widely known and established, but I also like a lot of stuf that probably nobody outside of German speaking countries has ever heard of.
