How can you possibly ask anyone to choose?! Western mechs have the likes of Atomic Robo and Megas XLR, while Japan's mechs can throw SOLAR SYSTEMS. I believe choosing between the two would cause the world to implode. Or something.

Why do I sense an incoming anime bashing/western supremacy spree? Seriously, this is will end something like "Warhammer 40k pwns your stupid anime mechs," I just know it with our community.
Defensive, much?

Anyway. Personally, I prefer the Eastern-style mechs when it comes to visual aspects. They tend be more humanoid, more agile and maneuverable, and come equipped with all kinds of awesomely retarded over-the-top weapons. It usually leads to better-paced and more impressive action scenes.

In videogames though, I prefer the Battletech-style Western mechs. Eastern-style mechs often feel... lacking. It's just 'normal' action scaled up a bunch. The bulky, clunky, somewhat unwieldy feel of Western mechs really enhances the idea that you're strapped to a 90-ton engine of mass destruction. The fact that they usually come equipped with stuff that's on the right side of the suspension-of-disbelief barrier helps, too.

Of course, there's plenty of cross-pollination in the genre, with Eastern mecha taking on aspects of 'traditional' Western mechs and vice-versa.

Fair point, though that's partly why I quoted you.
I guessed as much, I was just hassling you a bit. :D

I do have one question though, why is it people automatically think of gundams when japanese mechs are mentioned?

I always think of this first:

Oh yes.

I'm all about the Japanese stuff. Western mecha (with the exception of Megas) tends to look way too clunky to me.
Trust the Alliance to say that. Western Mecha just has grunt and gnarly muscles.

Because lets face it: You can have a robo-samurai... or you can have a walking castle powered by rage.

Not that the Eldar Gundam-Style robocops aren't awesome. Slender mechs done right, in my opinion.

I've seen people use Warhammer40k as an excuse to bash anime, especially this one guy who I still curse. So yeah, I've learned to be rather defensive, even moreso with Warhammmer40k.

They're an iconic example, and a lot of people learned about mechs through Toonami.

And excuse me for being an idiot, but what's that mech from?

Answer: BOTH.

Heh, sorry, but I hail from a love of both sides, so I can't actually vote on this thing. To me, there are only good mech shows, and bad mech shows. Their origin does not enter into it.

Because they're awesome.

Warhammer mechs are okay, I guess, but I like Nightmares and Gundams more.

You do realise that the only one who repeatedly keeps mentioning Warhammer 40k in this thread is you, right?

Agreed, though I kinda said that when quoting Funk.

On another note, since I probably gave the impression that I do, I don't hate Warhammer40k. The fanbase from what I've seen here, however, is a completely different story.

Robo isn't a mecha, he is mansized and doesn't have a pilot

You're actually right. Again, I'm going off of past experience with my posts and trying to tell off what I fear may happen. Whether my fears were founded is to be seen, though I'll admit that I overreacted a good bit.

Google images that led me to a site for the rules and mechs of robotech tabletop game.

Which I did not know existed.

I like both. MEGAS was freaking awesome but I like the design of a lot of the Japanese ones. More fluid, human-like than the more boxy, tank-with-legs Western style.

Western by far. I'm still very upset at From Software for making Gundam Armoured Core 4. But they gave us Chromehounds so we're cool. The zenith of western mech video gaming was oddly enough made by the Japanese!

Gurren Laggan, Megas XLR and Gunbuster shouldn't count, they are to giant robots what Freakazoid is to superheroes (the latter being more of a Nuke Ex Machina than anything).
While my ideal image of a cool mecha comes from anime, I'll have to go with Western because they try to pass less retarded shit that looks like it was designed by whoever did all the armor in WoW, except instead of PAULDRONS we get UNNECESSARY POINTED PROTRUSIONS.
Edit: I write this post with a Mekton Zeta PDF open in the background...ah well.
