This and Autism are both over diagnosed by doctors currently, mostly because parents want excuses for little Tommy and Suzy being either too lazy or stupid to do their schoolwork instead of making the little brats do the work themselves (aka lazy parenting.)
How does one misdiagnose Autism? That seems strange to me. If a six-year-old kid inexplicably beat the shit out of me after crying because I closed the front door to my house, I'd venture to say that boy's autistic.
Autism back 20 years ago was very hard to be diagnosed with, because it had a very narrow definition (think Dustin Hoffman in Rainman) unfortunately (according to the doctor my ex was trying to get to diagnose my daughter) the definition has been expanded to include just about everything because yuppie parents don't want their kids to have "anger problems" or be stupid or just be labeled as lazy by teachers. By definitions in the 80's, I had anger control issues (I would do the very thing you described) and it was treated by counseling instead of drugs and leniency. If I were sent in as I was in the 80's NOW, I would be diagnosed with ADHD or autism and drugged to the eyeballs to treat the symptoms instead of treating the cause.

Part of this is bad parenting, another is doctors just wanting these parents to stop coming to them over and over to get a tag on their kids so that it's not the kids' or parents fault. This over diagnosis problem isn't about the kids, it's that the parents don't want to somehow (with bad parenting, they would rather blame bad genes) responsible for their kids being a problem.

Real cases of both of these problems exist, and for those people I have sympathy and am willing to help them try and make something of themselves if they want the help (as the above poster that had ADD and owns his own business.) Some cases are extremely severe, with the person not being able to function in society normally, and those cases need to be treated as they always have been, but most cases of ADD (lack of focus does make it hard to function but with a little willpower it can be licked) are just an excuse and most of the autism cases I've seen lately are diagnosed with normal childhood behaviors (running into walls, putting things in lightsockets and up their noses, etc..) and aren't actually autism.

My mom's got a kid like that in her class. Teacher.

Of course it's an excuse. Most of the "cool" diseases kids have today are just excuses for laziness or poor education. I have a horrible penmenship. But I can get a paper that says "dysgraphia" to shut up all those idiots that say "it's really hard to read what you wrote there, sorry, no points".

Newsflash - I'll be doing an IT college, I don't care how my penmeship handles.

But there is little to no reason for not learning grammar. Unless you want people to laugh at your resume.

edit: ...Why kids can't fake some other fun diseases? Blood pressure is cool, you can pass out. So is irritable bowel syndrome. Or asthma...

Most of them probably haven't been diagonosed. Call me old fashioned but if they haven't been diagonosed I call them stupid.

Heh, know someone?
My parents, me, and one of my friends all have it.

Its really not a huge deal, just means we think a bit differently... Sometimes more roundabout, but from what I've seen we're usually able to kick the intellectual pants off the normal peoples.

Even if my strange urges to add "S" to words that do not need it can..shadow that fact, slightlys.

EDIT: Medication is for losers

My nephew has ADHD and that kid does not fake it, i've never known for a child to have that much energy and be all over the place, his medication has calmed him right down to half the hyperness. He is still a handful... ¬_¬
Some people do fake it and it is over diagnosed, however it is the same with depression. GP's can prescribe anti-depressents to people who arn't actually depressed and are just having a bad day or week. Disorders such as depression and ADHD are actually rarely confirmed by a psychiatrist which in my opinion could be fairly dangerous. I'm not sure if the same happens everywhere else, but i'm certain it happens here in the UK.

But you do believe Asperger's is legit, right?

My cousin has ADHD, and it's not a joke.

It's sad that there's people who actually use ADHD has means to get out of school or work etc, or parents who cannot handle their child so they use ADHD has an excuse.

The fact is, many people fake it and the ones who actually have it are deemed has fakers.

Well, your equivalent of the DSM-IV is very much at odds with ours, so that makes sense. But no, you're overall far better educated than us.

Though my sister tells me you're not nearly polite as your actors would have us believe :)
Oh we are much much worse, though i actually do sound like a over polite english actor we are in general a much worse society than movies lead you to believe. I shall demonstrate with the following links:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chav
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Griffin

we still have our good points and are in general quite nice people (not really polite though), but we are heading towards a bad place.

Are you sure you're not talking about Tourette's?

Nope. Everyone around here hardly even knows what it is. As a result, most people are quite well-behaved. The ones who don't are just idiots.

I think that seeing as ADD is in the minds of everyone, they tend to imagine they have it, if you get what I mean. Take OCD for example, it's reasonably uncommon, yet at least a quarter of the people I know have thought they have at one point or another.

So they can act as evil as they want without repercussions. "Oh, excuse little Timmy's setting fire to your tie, he has ADD"; "Oh, excuse my son kicking you in the shins, he's got ADD"

Sadly, your actors are lying to you and the average Brit is alot less polite that we should be. Chav's are the worst of our kind (I think 'White trash with knives, bricks, and glass bottles' is about summarizes it).

And don't get me started on Nick Griffin. Demon ID about sums us up right.

Personally, I think it's to get attention from peers or to foster some sort of reputation.

To justify obnoxious acts, borderline-criminal behaviour, and poor grades.

If you never had it, how would you know if it's merely an excuse? It's typically a bio-chemical imbalance that causes impulse control, as Lonan pointed out on the first page. The brain simply does not have enough of a particular neurotransmitter, or is unable to properly bond them at the appropriate sites. Because of this, the brain thinks it's asleep, and because the body isn't, the brain attempts to bring it's own 'concious activity levl' in-line with the body's, by seizing ANYTHING that remotely stimulates it.

Unfortunately, the brain can't just use a single passing occurrence to provide the jolt it needs, so it has to do this repeatedly, causing the appearance of low attention span and hyperactivity. This is why some adults diagnosed with low-grade ADD/ADHD are frequently caffeine-junkies; their brains crave a chemical that can offset their lack of mental alertness.

Now, here's the flip side of the coin: It IS over-diagnosed, and it's no longer only a bio-chemical birth irregularity. The number of cases where children were mis-diagnosed in the 80's and 90's is staggering, with a substantial percentage of patients diagnosed as ADD/ADHD having some other problem. While I don't have a firm (or necessarily accurate) percentage of the misdiagnosis percentage, that's more because there's many people and companies that would rather the public not realize how many kids were diagnosed with ADD/ADHD to seel Ritalin and other drugs by the mother-fucking boatload.

Then we have the tendency of parents over the last 30 years to plug their kids into 'electronic baby-sitters' has created a set of environmental conditions where the very nature of the games/programs create short attention spans, because of the rapidly changing material within them. This has created a form of ADD/ADHD that is purely environmentally caused, and doesn't (that I know of) have the corresponding bio-chemical deficiencies that I'm prone to.

So, to those of you that think ADD/ADHD is merely an excuse...
