I'd have no problem killing these advanced AI, and I'll tell you why: because the developer would have to be an idiot to code an AI that resents being killed in a game where it gets killed. Nope, any AI that smart will be coded to play along. It'd be like:

AI: "Oh! Please don't kill me!"
Dave: "Gee, I'm sorry, I'll let you live."
AI: "Haha, silly Dave, you can kill me if you want, I'm programmed for that, I'm just funning you."
Dave: "Oh. You must be some pretty advanced AI, because you just outsmarted me."

You're making the distinction between game AI and a sentient AI. Game AI is not sentient. It does not have the capability to grow and evolve as a sentient being does. For that matter, no true sentient AI has ever been created.

That said, if, hypothetically, a true AI were to manage a game, say GTA, I seriously doubt it would let you kill it as one of the NPCs. The NPCs would be subroutines, not part of the actual AI. Sure, the AI could make them seem exceedingly real, being able to code them such that they behave like real people, but it would still just be doing the same thing as now; gunning down a representation of a dude made up of pixels and code.

Also, barring some ridiculous breakthrough by an indie developer, a true AI post development would not go into games for decades to come. I'd imagine they'd go to more important things first, like tracking down cybercrimes, child porn, that kind of thing.

True A.I. would never work in a video game or virtual environment because they would know it's not real and would then have no reason to play along.
An A.I. would be a psychopath or worse.
if they were given emotions they would not actually be A.I.'s, they have to develop their own morals and emotions.
A.I.'s would have no instinct therefore no value in life.
A.I.'S cannot exist.

These are just a few of my theories of why A.I.'s can't and won't exist in games.
This is of course not the same definition of A.I that game devs use.

On that note, if we had actual AI that were that common, I seriously doubt they'd ship with a game. I imagine a system where each computer houses an AI, then that AI manages anything you put on the computer.

But again, for one, that level of commonality is so far away I can safely not care, and two, why would they be managing your home computer? We're talking about a sentient, 'living' being. They aren't, or at least they shouldn't be, constrained to running Windows Whatever, bad porn, and WoW.
