But cheats can make the game more fun. I enjoyed going on endless rampages in GTA: SA with cheats, for instance. Spawning a jet to make my getaway was always pleasing.
In a sandbox style game where a lot of the focus is on fun rather than challenge, then cheats are a good thing.

When used to overcome a challenge.. well then you're just not challenging yourself and feel a little dirty. The only game I had to use cheats for to beat was San Andreas. that ************ was insanely tough at times and the slow mo was the only way I could get past one off road race...

Typically companies used to release cheat codes towards the end of the game's popularity to extend the shelf life a bit. Now with downloadable content, there's no reason to do that. Also, multiplayer content does more to extend a game's life than cheat codes do.

I think games like Resident Evil and Condemned do it right. Finishing the game unlocks a new mode that spins the original campaign on it's ear (infinite rocket launcher, FPS mode, etc...). Cheats for cheats sake are lame. Although, a god mode is nice if the game is ridiculously hard (Transformers: The Movie Game, I'm looking at you).

I never used cheats to actually beat parts of the game, I don't think.
What, not even the health cheat?

i've noticed that game makers are not putting cheat codes into games that much anymore , several games in my collection don't have any and any that do put few out ,kane and lynch ,splinter cell , etc don't have any while gta4 and burnout paradise have a few . on the ps2 most games had lots this seems to be a new habit that bugs me and yes I AM AWARE OF ONLINE GAMES AND NOT BEING FAIR but when you play by yourself i see no reason for this and the makers of cheat software like action replay and gameshark are no where why?
Cheat codes are developed mostly for testing. Especially for localisation testing where the tester may not be great at video games but needs to see all in-game text.

They're kept in for fun but with online multiplayer they may make game hacking easier and distort online rankings.

I couldn't live without cheats!!

I am a hardcore ganmer through and through and so when i complete a game i like to do it again, to be sure i havn't missed something. This second time through i love to use cheats, mainly because it's fun but mostly to see what i can do!

On fallout 3 PC, i have started a second game and am using the console command to make all kinds of funny stuff happen!!

But i do resent using cheats the first time, unless there is an absolutely vital reason.

Right: it gives replayability to a game that's starting to diminsish in fun

Wrong: online...well that should be self explanitory

Using cheats is OK, I think. However, using them and saying you're good at the game isn't. Personally, I don't really use cheats, unless you count using an online walkthrough to get help on the last part of the Thieve's Guild questline in Oblivion, or whatever. However, I occasionally cheat for the fun of it. There's a certain satisfaction to be had seeing a Ford Mondeo (or whatever car it is) driving around the Japanese countryside with a laser killing people from a time about 2000 years before cars were even invented...

If you can guess the game then you get a cookie :D

Cheats in any online environment: No.
Cheats in singleplayer on first playthrough: ...If you really are that crap at playing.
Cheats to have random fun a la GTASA: Right on.

Cheats to unlock every song/character/combo/whatever in certain games (music, fighting, etc.): Kind of a grey area, probably yes seeing as said games aren't that fun in singleplayer. But also depending on SP campaign length.

I agree with Jimmyjames. Games like Jak and Daxter 2 and Resident Evil 4 got it right in regards to cheat codes. Collect enough eggs in Jack and Daxter 2 or gold in Resident Evil 4 and you unlock the cheat code. This would be better if it was you beat the game and you get a bonus play kind of mode where you can use cheat codes, or like in Drake's Fortune, you do say ten headshots in a row (On a second playthrough) and you get unlimited ammo with that weapon. Crackdown by far has the best system for cheat code use, because Keys to the City mode is a lot of fun. It really made me feel like I was playing the old Grand Theft Auto games. Cheat codes just need to be handeled well and people who don't want cheat codes don't use them and people who want them can, provided they beat the game or get ten headshots or something.

Having my 8-year old nephew call me a loser because I don't cheat at games was the moment I realized something was very wrong...

Don't think so, no.
Huh. I couldn't stop using that one. I'd mash it in compulsively every time I dinged my car.
It actualy got annoying, after a while.

Some cheats are fun, so long as they're not detrimental to gameplay. Big Head Mode, Tiny Body Mode, DK Mode, those were funny little cheats that made the game better, I thought. These I like.

Then there's the cheats everyone ELSE doesn't like: Noclip, Super Speed, Infinty Ammo, All Guns, Invincibility, et cetera. Yes, they're bad for online multiplayer. But since most of the PC gamers have found a way to hack games and cheat, does it even matter (lookin' at you, aimbot snipers!)? Unless the game is 100% online multiplayer-based, like Team Fortress 2, who cares if you cheat? I like the prospect of utterly dominating the computer with nigh-godlike power. Why don't they just program it so cheats are disabled for multiplayer or let people cheat in multiplayer and separate it from the rest of us?

Also, Trophies and Acheivements limit what cheats they can put in. I noticed that "CHEATS" nowadays are "UNLOCK COSTUME BY COLLECTING STUFF" which isnt a cheat, no matter how much you tell me it is Drakes Fortune.

I always like the Goldeneye approach to cheats. Earn them, and include some fun ones such as paintball or DK mode.

i like the fact most of you use cheat codes after you finish the games yes it makes it have alot more replay value as for walkthroughs and strategy guides i use them when stuck or it's a big game like GTA or fallout 3 just to help but like cheat codes i wait till i've playedthrough once then to find all the hidden goodies and for those against using cheat codes you are right too , you don't have to use them but if you want to great and for online play they would be blocked just like trophies are in off line play
