A friend and I where rambling on about absolutely nothing as per usual and we came around to gaming and the gender divide.

Stereotypically, when I and many others I know think of gaming, we tend to think of it as a guy's activity where we females just "don't get it" or don't care. As one of the few chicks out there that do enjoy a good game every now and then, I suppose I'm inclined to believe that this is more of a male dominated activity from what I know and see when it comes to the gaming side of life.

So, what do yo all think? Games are for the guy's or is it a bit closer or even the opposite or is the old adage true?

*Note, the other is for those on the site who are not into gaming (wich seeing as how this is a GAMING site...) or for those who do not identify as male or female. Happy now guy's gals and others?

I have yet to find these people that dislike a woman who decides to play games.

I think we should be glad the whole market has opened up a bit more to chicks. We just need to get rid of booth babes (or, introduce booth dudes. Blegh.)

I'm not opposed to women gaming and I know many do in fact I welcome it. But it is inclined to be a guys thing, and if you don't believe me go play Duke Nukem Forever which came out 2 weeks ago and see how girl friendly it is.

the player ratio's getting more even but I think the dev teams need more female input.

I imagine it's hard to make female oriented games when it's made from the male perspective. As a result, many more games are made for the male demographic because they believe they know what the male demographic wants.

There will probably be a drastic change in the next couple years as more women become part of the conception stage of game design. For now though, it's pretty male oriented.

I think the most sought after demographic are males ages 18-34, the vast majority of rated M games are aimed it.

...no offense, but you, my friend, are part of the reason women don't play games.

I always thought that having a gamer girlfriend would be awesome... So I found one...

It was HORRIBLE.

She didn't just play games, she played them competitively. Sure, getting beaten by your girlfriend every now and then is alright, maybe even good since it shows that your girl is capable of gaming... But... When you get raped repeatedly by her in Call of Duty...its just... there are no words... Sad face.

there's no "both" or "neither" option? what about "transgender?" :(

but yeah, it's a male dominated game, as in mostly it's played by males, and the top-ranked players are probably mostly males. doesn't mean a chick can't pick up a game and kick my ass in it though

I play games daily. None of my "real" friends play, male or female. My gaming friends are all online and I love them dearly. My ex used to think I played too much and I used to wish he'd show an interest in my interests. Guess that's why he's my ex.

I know more female gamers, but for the most part they're more interested with the fanbase than the games themselves.

It's not really a matter if you're pro/anti female gaming, but I suppose that factors in a bit.

As a female, I know gaming females are far and few between (Being the only girl at a gaming party is a bit awkward mind you.) and I will agree that most games seem to be marketed towards guys, and 90% of females who do game are into "kiddie/PG" stuff like Mario. Personally, I love a good night of COD, Duke Nukem, or any of the like (personal preference being racing and first-person shooters).

I also find some guy's to be intimidated by a girl on the "field". Again, being a guy's thing, I suppose it comes down to a territory thing. (Similar to the women in traditionally male dominated jobs.) But it would be nice to know I am not the only chick out there who's not a "weirdo" in the gaming world.

Same here. We argued over who would play what when, and she got pissed because I was always better than her... Blah dee blah blah. I have no problem with girl gamers, as long as they don't try and claim to be better than me just because they have "Teh Boobs!" If they can out fly me on HAWX, fine, if they can't, they better suck it up and admit it.

Don't worry. I'm weird too.

But what scares me far more than idea of being weird is the idea of being normal.
Shall we be weird together m'dear?

I am not against women playing video games and table-top games. I actually welcome them with open arms. However, I can't deny that the ratio between males and females I know who play video games is fairly high.
