They are very expensive, but gameing laptops are AWESOME take all your games with you, play your 360 on it. You now have a portable awesome day, congratulations. If you are always stationary and don't like to carry things cause you are lazy then a desktop is for you.

A desktop resembling a black jet engine (sounds like one too)

But would really like a decent laptop as my job involves travelling and desktops just don't like it.

laptop,
My pc has shuffled off the mortal coil and I haven't had the time/cash for a rebuild.

though it is painful going from a full size keyboard and full tower to an LCD screen and a keyboard the size of a place mat.

I have a laptop. A vastly overpowered custom Dell laptop, created for gaming. My father and I had an argument as I was leaving for college: Desktop or Laptop? I wanted a Desktop because of A) Gaming and B) the keyboard having less of a tendency to cause carpal tunnel. He wanted me to have a laptop so it was easier to bring home. We met halfway. He paid a lot more than he would have spent on a normal laptop or even a jacked up desktop and customized my laptop to run any game I wanted it to play. So, I have a laptop with delusions of grandeur.

EDIT: Wtf Mobius.... mine's a 17" widescreen too and don't have a cool keyboard :( I'm gonna go yell at my dad now.

Well, if I had a choice between a desktop PC or a Laptop, I'd go with the desktop PC. I'm a gamer, true, but even if you don't need the very latest most powerful cards in your computer, after two or three years, the age of the laptop starts to show. And in a bad way too, I was forced to use only a laptop for a few months. And by the time I got enough money to get a new PC, the laptop was slower than tar going through a straw. And I use Linux, so i can't blame it on viruses either. You need some memory upgrades from time to time, just to keep up with the demands of various art and office tools. So yeah, I'm going with PC here

We all know that the desktop has more available processing/graphics power and is thus more suited for processor/graphics intensive programs, such as modern games. Laptops, while being somewhat less powerful in terms of graphics/processing capabilities, do have the advantage of mobility.

One issue that also must be taken into account is heat dissipation. Laptops are small, they cannot contain large heatsinks nor large volume fans. This is one of the reasons that desktop PCs enjoy higher capabilities, as they can more effectively rid themselves of heat. A desktop PC also has a lot more power available to it, which contributes to the higher performance of desktop type machines.

That having been said, I enjoy the convenience of a laptop very much. I would probably buy a new laptop before I buy a new desktop, but the issue is simply too complex for a simple binary choice [this one XOR that one]. The relative strengths and weaknesses of both platforms must be considered for the task at hand before deciding on which platform to purchase and/or utilize.

Having spent a lot of time building, repairing and upgrading my own and other peoples' computers, I must say that desktops are preferable to laptops for me. I hate working on laptops with a passion. It's hard to get to anything. You have to practically tear them clear apart to do anything besides upgrading RAM or replacing a drive. For a portable device, they also aren't very durable either. You have to spend thousands to get one of those 'ruggedized' laptops to have anything that can take the punishment of actually being taken everywhere with you. I also hate their keyboards. They are too small and the shallow key strokes feel weird when you are used to a real keyboard. Touch pads and those little thumbstick things are terrible for controlling the mouse too. Even the biggest laptop screen is too small to spend much time looking at. The words are so small, it gives me a headache to spend much time emailing or typing on a laptop. If you get a laptop with a big screen, it's so unwieldy and heavy that you don't want to take it with you. By the time you hook up a real keyboard and mouse and monitor up to a laptop so you can stand to use it for any length of time, it's not so portable anymore. And like you said, laptops are terrible for gaming. Unless you spend a huge chunk of change for an Alienware or similar laptop, all you can really play on them are online flash games and really old 2-D games. They get overheated easily too, especially the gaming ones.

Laptops are just "OK" and are a nice portable thing to take around with you at work, and if you really want games you can play older ones or MMO's on them, but in general I think they just suck, hardly any power once you unplug it, only (easily) upgradable thing is RAM, and if it uses on board graphics (which most do) then even after a while of internet surfing it'll start to lag.

The convenience of Laptops is just great because you don't have to plug it into a monitor, but if I have the chance to use a PC, then I'll just take that.
