Just because I am curious how much the escapist knows of the LHC here is a question.

What do the scientists at CERN hope to find other than the higgs boson?

Any other information is good to post as well, since I just write a 6 page essay on this I know a bit but I always want to know more.
I could be wrong about this, cause I read it quite a while ago, and physics is not even close to my strong point, but aren't they looking to recreate the events of the Big Bang, and also something about Dark Matter and Anti Matter... Or are those all the same thing?

Do I understand what the large Hadron Collider is? After a fashion. I know they're smashing particles together real fast, and they're hoping to discover really tiny particles after they go boom.

I think I'm on par with Simple English Wikipedia, here. I've heard of the LHC, I know they're doing science, and I know there are bosons involved.

Is this above the understanding of your peers?
the LHC just gives them the ability to know exactly where a particle is and also know it's velocity
Impossible!
Heisenberg told me so!
Though I don't remember when.

I read on another site that they've already had inexplicable results in a "quark/gluon soup" at an American collider this year. Something to do with "symmetry-breaking". I'm still iffy on the micro-black hole issue, and still consider this irresponsible science, but people would rather throw caution into the wind than lose out on a multi-billion dollar project, so what does it matter what I think?

Just remember that such assurances of safety were made when they were testing nukes in Nevada that irradiated and killed quite a few people, not to mention Tsar Bomba, DDT, asbestos, chemically treated foods, lead plumbing, mercury ingestion... you get the idea.

Yeah I know what it is. I call bullshit on all that doomsday paranoia that surrounded it. It finally had its first collision a week or two ago and I am hoping they produce some results

first glance shows that the escapists know more about the cutting edge of science than my advanced physics and math courses.

sometimes I hate going to a community college.
Huh, I had assumed you went to a high school from the starting post... anyway, I dont really know much about how it works, but I know of its existence, and I guess its supposed potential to destroy the universe or something of the sort

I just was curious how many people actually know of it and if this is just another case of Americans being ignorant again.
Naturally, I know what it is. Not only what it does, but even those laughable rumors surrounding it for a while.

...wait, rumors?

Ooh I'm glad Tatari wasn't around for that.

The Large Hadron Collider is extremely interesting to me and I try to read all the news that comes up about it. The research being done their could definitely unlock some secrets behind the creation of the universe and other things we can't imagine at this moment. I can't wait until they get it to full power.

Nope i have no what you are talking about because i don't pay attention to most things that don't directly affect me. Call me ignorant if you must but that's the way i am
But its gonna blow up the whole world and collapse the universe, of course it affects you!

Its also gonna cure cancer.
That's just fine with me i can dig the world blowing up and the whole cancer thing? Don't have it so again not my problem.

Sparticles?
For some reason, 300 comes to mind.

I feel sorry for you, your classmates & professor being ignorant and all. /: Why yes, I know what it is, and I didn't think it was that "unheard of." Meh.

THIS IS PHYSICS!

I think I could capitalize on that...
I'd buy it... On a shirt.
Maybe... Though I do like it.

As an American, pretty much everyone I know understands what the LHC is. I guess I live in an area that isn't as ignorant as the American stereotype.

And for those of you who didn't catch it, last week it collided particles for the first time at 7 TeV
Um, no this happened last year I think you'll find. In France sometime in September I believe

I suppose I'll chalk this one up to another case of Americans being ignorant.

Sometimes I loathe having moved to Florida of all places in the u.s.

What I thing you are referring to is when they accelerated particles at half power last year. No collisions actually occurred then, The collisions occurred last week.
