Poll: Large Hadron Collider

Just because I am curious how much the escapist knows of the LHC here is a question.

What do the scientists at CERN hope to find other than the higgs boson?

Any other information is good to post as well, since I just write a 6 page essay on this I know a bit but I always want to know more.

I could be wrong about this, cause I read it quite a while ago, and physics is not even close to my strong point, but aren't they looking to recreate the events of the Big Bang, and also something about Dark Matter and Anti Matter... Or are those all the same thing?

I was writing my research paper on the Large Hadron collider for my English composition class and no one knew what it was. My physics and calculus classes didn't fare much better I thought this was pretty big news.

Do I understand what the large Hadron Collider is? After a fashion. I know they're smashing particles together real fast, and they're hoping to discover really tiny particles after they go boom.

I think I'm on par with Simple English Wikipedia, here. I've heard of the LHC, I know they're doing science, and I know there are bosons involved.

Is this above the understanding of your peers?

the LHC just gives them the ability to know exactly where a particle is and also know it's velocity

I read on another site that they've already had inexplicable results in a "quark/gluon soup" at an American collider this year. Something to do with "symmetry-breaking". I'm still iffy on the micro-black hole issue, and still consider this irresponsible science, but people would rather throw caution into the wind than lose out on a multi-billion dollar project, so what does it matter what I think?

Just remember that such assurances of safety were made when they were testing nukes in Nevada that irradiated and killed quite a few people, not to mention Tsar Bomba, DDT, asbestos, chemically treated foods, lead plumbing, mercury ingestion... you get the idea.

Yeah I know what it is. I call bullshit on all that doomsday paranoia that surrounded it. It finally had its first collision a week or two ago and I am hoping they produce some results

The Large Hadron Collider is extremely interesting to me and I try to read all the news that comes up about it. The research being done their could definitely unlock some secrets behind the creation of the universe and other things we can't imagine at this moment. I can't wait until they get it to full power.

What I thing you are referring to is when they accelerated particles at half power last year. No collisions actually occurred then, The collisions occurred last week.
