Looks fun and I'd love to try it. I also have nothing against who do, it's kinda like acting in a play >.>

From my local club theres two particular breeds of LARP:
One is very combat heavy and is basically just an excuse to hit people with foam weapons for the afternoon/evening.
The other is very role-play heavy.

I'm a fan of the combat heavy system, I personally couldn't care less what your character's motivation etc is, I'm just a child at heart and I want to hit people with swords.

If I wanted to hit people with foam weapons, I'd go on American Gladiators. Or the local pool.

My Larping experience is basically confined to putting on a cloak and some old leather boots and grabbing a couple of fencing foils, then running around in what passed for woods around our town in the middle of the night trying our best to kill each other. In a gaming way at least.
And yes, it was fun, so therefore it was awesome. I can still remember inadvertently coming up with a character that some of my old friends still love to hate if only because I kicked their ass so many times while playing as that character. :p I still don't think she ever made paper.
But screw foam weapons. Real metal and wood is where it's at. Teach each other to block next time, just with a bruise instead of all the lacerations of an edged blade.

Im sorry to say it but the idea out nerds even me, which takes some bloody doing.

Id much rather just act in a play, but too each their own.

LARPing is AWESOME

A group of friends and I went camping over Easter and went LARPing, a group of about 10 of us, and it was great fun.
Made our own costumes and weapons, too.

I love it, if I had the time or money to get proper gear, I'd definitely do it more often. There's a place near me that does Airsoft LARPing in a dystopian environment, but sadly, I cannot afford either an Airsoft gun, or a long leather trench coat :p

I'd call it sad more so than awesome.... but that wouldn't stop me from joining up if a lot of them had some kind of huge battle around here. I'd love to be part of one of those. I guess (for me at least) large scale LARPing can be really cool, but if it's just a couple people, then it's just wierd.

I got 2 seconds into the second video before laughing.

Needless to say, there are lines I have drawn myself that are never to be crossed, and LARPing is so far past said lines that they are dots.

Sad-nerdy until I saw Role Models, then not even awesome-nerdy, just fully awesome! There's a LARPing society at my uni but I never joined cos the members all looked really really sad (and kinda awesome as well)

Well, you can't truly have fun if you let pride weigh you down.
If nothing else; LARPing requires one to let go and embrace the absurd and embarrassing.

Never done LARPing, but I'm tempted to start with soft air gun LARPing. Seems like fun.

Well, pretty much that. Even when I was 10 we played with sticks and not foam, that's quite pathetic hitting someone then having your "weapon" bounce back.

I used to play when i was younger, i just lost the connection to it somehow.
It was awesome though, depending on where you played. The best place i went was this anual 4 day scenario, where everyone brought tents, and there was a whole lot of city play as well as awesome combat, and it was really well aranged.
Also played a place where it was just foam-sword fighting, and the roleplaying didn't consist of more than the green-painted guys trying to talk in a deep voice, that wasn't a place i cared to come back to.

Paint-ball technically counts as LARPing, kinda. I've done that.
Not really... I used to do LARP'ing when i was younger, and i play hardball now, and at least the place where i play hardball, it has nothing to do with roleplaying, it's basicly like a sports game.
As to clarify, if LARP'ing was nothing but a foam sword fight, i wouldn't consider it roleplaying either, just as i wouldn't consider kids playing soccer to be roleplaying professional soccer teams.
But yeah, i can see your point, just i nitpicking a bit

As a woman who likes her men in shape(no round does not count), I think LARPing is a great way to encourage a fellow geek to get off the couch and get outside.

While I would never do it (unless great opportunity presented itself), great props to the people who do LARP. Gamer:the Podcasting (a long gone LARP centric podcast) was my absolute favorite, and it even opened me up to it. Beforehand, I considered it rather silly, as with most roleplayer.

I have tried both World of Darkness LARPing, and Dagohir/swordfighting LARPing. Both of which I like a lot, but I don't know any local chapters in my hometown to join.

That said, you can call LARPing impromptu acting as well, because at it's most basic, you acting as someone else is just that: acting/roleplaying.

It's awesome-nerdy, though. Enough said.

Surely it really depends on how well you do it? If you can pull of an epic LARP then it's Awesome, and if it fails it's sad. Tbqh, I think that it'd be pretty hard for you not to enjoy it if you got into it; definitely awesome nerdiness from my perspective. :D

I used to love LARP, but then a bunch of the groups I was part of became... pretentious dickweeds and I ended up quitting.
Mostly it was V:tM or Werewolf, never tried any other ones due to lack of groups in my area.
