Oh man, I went into this thread hoping someone would post that League of Legends takes skill, and I have to thank you for making my day. League of Legends is horribly buggy, horribly balanced, and there is very little you can do as a player to set you apart from other players besides knowing what to do, which is usually common snese. The game's "skill shots" would actually be considered skillful if they had accurate hit-boxes and weren't the most spamable abilities in the game.

For reference I play League of Legends daily.
Hmmm, I'm inclined to disagree, in some respects anyway. I don't see where you're getting the idea that it's buggy, maybe you play on a different server but I've had very few problems with it myself. As for balance I think if you buy the right items to counter your opponents strengths it tends to work fine. The only problem I've really had is when champions get over-fed.

Back on topic, while I haven't played it, I hear that Supreme Commander takes serious strategic skill rather than most other RTS' which just require tactics.

It's incredibly buggy. I can silence a poppy only to have her charge me a split second later. The same thing happens during stuns; if you stun someone as they are about to cast an ability that ability will still cast. I've lost track of the number of times I've been able to flash while stunned. Last night a Moakoi on my team was able to walk through walls occasionally. The brush is also incredibly buggy; I've placed a ward in the middle of a bush only for it to not reveal the bush.

Those bugs are completely game-breaking.

On balance, I take it you haven't gone against a Vayne? You can't really counter her;
1.) Build armor? Nah, % true damage!
2.) Build MR? Nah, % true damage!
3.) Build health? Nah, % true damage!

Nothing like being four shot by a 1 / 5 Vayne with sheen. Using items as an argument against needing balance is insane.

Don't even get me started on Nocturne...

Bulletstorm's challenge runs were great for testing your skill. One little mistake and you can screw up your entire run.

Really?! I've never experienced any of that at all.

As for Vayne, I havn't really played against her so I can't really comment on that but doesn't she have the lowest health ever?

I dunno what game you play as my friends and I experience the casting spells while stunned/silenced bug on a per game basis.

You play on the American server don't you?
Yes, and we all play with less than 100 ping. This is the only game anything like this happens so it's on their end as far as I can tell.

I'm having a ***** of a time right now with LA Noire. It needs a lot of skill, and not skills usually associated with regular gaming either.

Other than that Portal springs to mind. It depends on what exactly you class as skill. Old games didn't require any more skill than new games, only the skill to overcome dodgy gameplay and bad graphics.

I've never seen or heard of it happening on the European server.

Not entirely serious, maybe.

I'd say there are, yes.

Recently, I've been playing Dawn of War 2 coop with a friend. We're playing on a harder difficulty (Second to last I think) and I must say that the game really is quite challenging. Although every RTS definitely has their strong tactical roots, I really like the way it works in DoW.

I'm playing as the Force Commander and Thaddeus, and since we're still pretty early in the game, they both get torn apart REALLY quick if I make any sort of mistake with them! I learned the hard way not to send my force commander charging straight at the dozen eldar shooting at his face. It doesn't work very well on a harder difficulty. My friend currently favors using Tarkus and Avitus. It's a lot of fun to combine our wits to think of the best way to handle some of the really nasty situations, and how satisfying it is to handle things well.

Of course then some things end up going horribly wrong. Like when I get Thaddeus to Assault Jump right into Tarkus' grenade. Or when we end up aggroing half the map in one sloppy approach. It's really punishing if you make a stupid move and end up having to salvage yourself from the mess your stupidity caused. Bosses are really fun and tough as well.

Sure lots of games require skill, but different kinds of skill. I think in the case of DoW (As with most RTS games and some RPG games) it almost entirely requires mind.

All games have skill. Yes, even Kirby's Epic Yarn. You can't die, but equally there are going to be players who get stuck because they lack the skill to get past a particular area. People don't seem to realise that gaming is pretty damn difficult, we just all take it for granted.

If you've ever watched non-gamers try to play a videogame, even an easy one, you will see that. They fail miserably.
