Let them come out with it.
Stop bitching.
They made it perfectly clear that it's a whole new game, not just an update.

agreed, Episode 3 should really be the focus for Valve at this point. That and Portal.

Looks great, but Episode 3 should be at the top of their priorities. I think they're taking so long because they are trying to think of an amazing epic ending for such an awesome series.

There's a few posts already that pointed out that the team that makes L4D isn't the same team that makes Episode 3. That should be common knowledge to people that know how video game development works, but apparently not. No offense to you in particular.. it's just.. shocking that I keep seeing the same thing over and over again.

Because its easier to produce L4D then a game with a compelling story. To be fair episode 3 could be coming out with L4D (mabey called the blue box).

WHO CARES I FINALLY GET THE CHAINSAW I HAVE BEEN SCREAMING FOR SINCE THE FIRST ONE CAME OUT WOOOHOOOO! [ok yeah I am enthusiastic about this game lol] It looks like the first game, just better all around: [aside from half the new team being black {not racist}]new AI director, new weapons, different ammo types, new Graphics, new zombies & bosses, ect. (looks wicked I am getting it though because {suprisingly} every game Valve has made so far has been great.)
Yep, 50 more bucks for a few new melee weapons and new characters we dont care about. TOTALLY WORTH IT.

This. Also, remember that no price has been given yet, and after doing some research, it definitely does justify making a whole new game instead of updating. And they did say that they were going to continue updating the original L4D, and allow custom maps in L4D to be used in L4D 2.

This time, apparently, there will be an overarching storyline between the campaigns. Valve claims that people will be able to see the development of the four characters as they progress.
I got the info from Rock, Paper, Shotgun's interview with Chet Faliszek, Valve's project lead.

UGH
Valve promised on their website and in interviews that there would be multiplayer rankings and matching based on an intuitive tracking system that made sure you wouldn't get paired with morons and team killers. This was promised for L4D before it shipped. Well, it wasn't there! After much feedback from the community, Valve promised that the matchmaking and ranking along with a 4v4 team search would be included in the SDK. Now I am expected to pay $50 for something that was promised to me in the fucking start. Way to go Valve, you are more and more like EA everyday.

With Valve's credentials, ditching another $50+ bucks for a complete expansion pack experience would have been a no-brainer, and considering you can still play the levels of L4D, while enjoying those of L4D 2 and the improvements it will bring to the table, I really don't see how this can be a bad thing.

Although, I can understand that a lack of DLCs in form of new campaigns for the first L4D can be a let down for console gamers, but then again, PC Gamers have the SDK and the possibility to mess around with the game code as they see fit, and creating new campaigns is a given for the master race anyway.

So, I will say this, I am 'hyped' about L4D 2, but in no hurry to get it, as there are other IPs that may be worth playing first, like MW2, Dragon Age: Origins and Prototype.

I don't get why everyone's acting as if the original Left 4 Dead has only just come out, it's been a good while. (similar time frame to say... Cod4 and WaW?)

I do however think they should at least get Episode 3 done before bringing out anything else, because it's what all the Valvers want more.

And on the new stuff for L4D2, it's not just a new story and more wepaons, they're apparently updating the "AI director" so it can change the weather, and the route survivors have to take. They're also updating the zombies.

NO! I mean why valve?! They could've made it an expansion and Steam could've made it free for those who has L4D already. But yet again it'll be great to have a chainsaw as backup... but we'd still be fucked by the tank at close combat.

Hmm just had an interesting idea:

what if left 4 dead 2 was to come out in some sort of box with half-life 2: episode 3!

Not only would that involve the most ungainly collection of game names ever, but it would be AWESOME!

Just an idea though (would be nice if it were more).

EDIT: Didn't realise someone else had just suggested the same thing, the blue box wouldn't be a bad idea at all (I couldn't decide on what colour to suggest).
