First of all, let me make one thing clear: I have absolutely no disdain for Left 4 Dead 2. The only criticism I can make towards the game is...WHY?

The original Left 4 Dead (yes, now we have to call it "the original") is still hot off the shelves, and Valve announces a sequel?

(What the hell happened to Episode 3?)

I hope I'm not the only one who thinks this is a bad move.

(And seriously, where the fuck is Episode 3?)

Now, let's pretend for a second that people actually wanted a sequel this early; what new game mechanics do they have in store for us this time around? Nothing much.

We have new settings, new characters, new weapons and the ability to use melee weapons. It sounds more like an update to Left 4 Dead than an actual sequel.

(And let us not forget, they're probably really busy making Episode 3!)

And the title! Left "4" Dead "2"? From now on it should be a rule: you can only have ONE single digit number in the title of your game!

(Unless that game is Half Life 2: Episode 3, that would be okay!)

But I didn't make this thread just so I could rant about Left 4 Dead 2 (I'm writing a book for that), I made it so I could see what others think about it. Do you think it's a good idea? Thoughts? Questions? Random fanboy rage? Say it all with a comment :)

(AND GODDAMMIT VALVE!!! FINISH EPISODE 3!!!)

I have to say I feel the same way, perhaps not as strongly, but yes, the feeling is there. I really don't understand why Left 4 Dead 2 was announced. I missed the trailer for it, but does it really matter? Its gonna be the same thing. >_< I look forward to new IP's a lot more than I do sequels. Especially a Left 4 Dead sequel. Left 4 Dead held my interest for about a week, tops. Could honestly care less about number 2. Valve, your time is better spent elsewhere.

They'll have been making it for some time now... it won't take long if they're using the same engine, so I can understand the speed. Why do you complain? "We have new settings, new characters, new weapons and the ability to use melee weapons." I'd say that sounds like a different game to me, what more do you want??

If you think it's too soon, cool, don't play it.

I'll be enjoying me some chainsaw =D

EDIT: I'm leaving the HL: epi 3 argument out because I don't like half life. That'll explain some of my L4D2 joy.

They could've made it DLC, but I'll get it anyway. Maybe they'll make it so you merge the 2 and can use any of the 8 characters? Probably not, but a guy's gotta dream I guess.

You sound like someone who loves Half Life.

Anyway I don't think this is a problem; I wouldn't exactly call Left 4 Dead 'hot off the shelves', considering it has been roughly 7 months since its release. I've seen a lot of people saying that it should just be a Left 4 Dead update but I can't honestly see why. They couldn't just add it all in, otherwise it would be Left 8 Dead. And they're changing the models for the special Infected from the looks of things, as well as having to suddenly incorporate melee weapons into all the existing maps, and the new AI Director 2.0. The only reason people say this could be an update for the first L4D is because it's following the same sort of mold, i.e. 4 survivors, lots and lots of zombies, use this gun, go. It's as worthy as being a new stand-alone release as Elder Scrolls V is from Oblivion.

But you're not wrong, it certainly is quite early, and their priorities would be more suited in Half-life.

I'm just hoping they eventually release left 4 dead (first or second, whichever) for PS3. that is honestly the only Xbox 360 exclusive i wished would be available for PS3, unless i can count that downloadable fallout 3 content.

WHO CARES I FINALLY GET THE CHAINSAW I HAVE BEEN SCREAMING FOR SINCE THE FIRST ONE CAME OUT WOOOHOOOO! [ok yeah I am enthusiastic about this game lol] It looks like the first game, just better all around: [aside from half the new team being black {not racist}]new AI director, new weapons, different ammo types, new Graphics, new zombies & bosses, ect. (looks wicked I am getting it though because {suprisingly} every game Valve has made so far has been great.)

I've only played the first two campains co-op with a friend of mine, and I thought it was a good game. but I wonder if you could even call L4D2 a sequel, simply because L4D didn't really have a story, I would call it an alternate story. Wait maybe there will ad a story this time:)

Honestly, I'm kind of psyched. At first, I was skeptical too. "A new Left 4 Dead game? Why couldn't they just come out with new DLC or something?" But I thought about it for a bit, and realized that they couldn't do that for a very simple reason. The main selling point for this (other than the apparent melee weapons, including the chainsaw) seems to be that they have super-upgraded the AI Director to pull off some new twisted tricks. Changing the places that zombies appear is old-hat now, but changing the weather to further hinder you, or changing the actual path that you can take in each level? Those are some sweet new twists that will change the playing experience every time you play, which increases replayability one-hundred fold at least.

People who enjoy Left 4 Dead enjoy it because it's a different experience every time you play, but you start to go throw the motions before long, just running along the set path. If the path can change, though... Well. That is more than enough to get me interested enough to buy the new one.

Also, fireaxe and chainsaw.

I definitely agree with you on this, though. I mean, holy crap. Yeah, it took them three years between Half-Life 2 and Episode One to come out, which in and of itself is a bit suspect, but it only took them a year after that for The Orange Box, with Episode Two inside. The next year, Left 4 Dead came out, so I can understand the delay there, but still. Loyal Half-Life fans have been waiting patiently (read: chomping at the bit) for the finale of this chapter of the story, and we're getting rewarded with delay after delay.

My only hope is that they're actually making it a full-length game and we will get to play a huge finale chapter to close up this part of the Half-Life story. Anything less and I'll be rather disappointed.

It's going to be good, it's valve.

So yay for L4D2. Stop your whining about how it was rushed please?

I do think it is a bit early, and their efforts would be better suited to giving people a relief from the cliffhanger that was HL2:Ep2.

But I am not opposed to the game itself. Chainsaws? New settings? Moar zombies? Even better AI?

Sounds fun to me!

Yeah, I'm not gonna deny that I would rather have Episode 3 than Left 4 Dead 2. Let me clarify one thing though, I'm not angry, just really puzzled.

I own "the original" Left 4 Dead, and I still play it today, almost as if it had been released yesterday. So as you can imagine, the announcement of a sequel this early confused me greatly. It just makes very little sense, since Valve has so many other franchises they've been keeping fans craving more for (ex: Portal, Counterstrike, HALF LIFE, etc.) It simply does not compute.
