Poll: Let Portal 2 be our Twilight

First of all, let's not get into Twilight hating, my point is this, do you remember, even if you liked the book, how the masses of hype got on your nerves? (if not, you were probably one of the ones spreading it). How about Portal 2? The game I religiously believe will be the greatest ever made, doesn't that deserve those levels of hype? Well other than cake references* portal is not big news lke, say, Halo was. I have just checked on amazon and the twilight box set is £45, Portal 2 will, I think, be £60. I think it's worth it.
So, can we, as gamers select our champion when the time comes? There is a worry at the back of my mind that the sequel to Portal may not be quite so great, and only time will tell but if it does, will we all join forces?

*Unfortunately, for those of you who don't know, the cake has had to be euthanised to continue testing

I don't doubt that it's going to be really good and I'll buy it (when it's 15 pounds or less) but I don't think it'll ever be as good as something like Baldur's Gate 2, which is actually my 'Twilight' (as you so eloquently put it).

how is portal 2 supposed to be "our" twilight? ones a crap book and worse movies, and the others a game... full of cake... and awesomeness, and portal 2 is yet to be released. i have little to no idea what this is supposed to mean, cause comparing a game to a book/movie is like comparing a fish to a dog... it just doesnt make much sense and gets you nowhere. and just because i can think of twilight without saying something hateful, it is full of crap and should die in a hole full of hungry dogs and tiny little spikes.

No, Portal 2 will not be Jesus: The Game. It'll be good, but you're throwing your hopes up too high. I'm simply paying it no mind; when it comes out, then I'll let it enter my thoughts.

Anyone who's overly radical about anything is a problem. I loved the LOTR and read them way before the movies which irritated me that then everyone and their grandma fell in love with. This goes for most fads although I refuse to pick up a Twilight book as I know it violates lore (Yes, that is one good way to piss me off).

Portal 2 should just be a fun game, and nothing more.

Yeah... not sure about the 'greatest game of all time' thing and I try not to fervently sell myself out to corporations. I think I'll wait, get the game if enough people I know recommend it, not if not, and continue living life as normal either way. Thanks though.

(Off the top of my head: Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, NOLF, Batman: Arkham Asylum)

Portal 2 looks nice but it's just a puzzle game with super-pretty graphics/sound.

Like Portal, I'd question the length/replayability. Sure, it's an astounding ride, but it's not an astounding game. It's only good.

This is what killed Portal for me. People wouldn't stop referencing it. Mores specifically, they wouldn't stop referencing 3 measly parts of it; the cake, the cube, and that stupid song. It got old really fast. Hearing the same "cake is a lie" jokes uttered dozens of times in a single day can really irritate someone who has gotten sick of it. Then it got even worse when people took these jokes out of context. Suddenly the game wasn't about thinking with portals, but rather about telling dumb jokes about cakes and cubes. People who hadn't even played the damn game were making these jokes. These jokes overshadowed every other aspect of the game, and soon it seemed like the only parts of Portal that were recognized by most were the parts I had grown to hate.

Having that happen with Portal 2 would be awful. I'm sure it will though, and there isn't much Valve can do about that since it isn't there fault. But we don't have to actively encourage this horrible idea. Besides, no game should earn mindless praise/scorn. Nothing in life should, because people have different opinions. To proclaim one game as being above all others is to ignore this vast diversity of opinions.

Well your definition is a little off, when I hear Twilight I think massively mainstream series which pulls in a ton of people while the people on the sidelines hate it because of the incredibly evident badness which the fans just ignore. So for something to be a Twilight series it has to have major problems and be hated by smart people, while also massively mainstream (portal doesn't fit the bill on any of these really). Unfortunately, we already have a "Twilight" monster series, her name is Call of Duty, pray that Portal doesn't suffer the same fate.

Plus, why in God's name would I want Portal 2 to get referenced so much it kills any enjoyment of the game?

You can't mention the first one without some jackass saying something about cake, the cube, or the song. Its so fucking annoying and I am glad Valve is taking steps to try and make sure that doesn't happen.

It will likely be a well designed game, maybe even a GREAT game, but not the greatest.

Also. "The Cake is a Lie" was REALLY annoying, everyone remembered that? I don't want more people quoting not that funny BS every other line.

It was especially annoying because, firstly, the cake was not a lie, and secondly, I finished it much later than everyone else.
