I'm not even asking for a reason why, just whether you do, or you don't.

Personally, I don't. But as the OP said in this thread of his http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.266741-I-dont-like-Half-Life-C?page=2 , he has assumed that it is awfully rare for someone not to like Half-Life 2. I don't know whether to agree with this, and I'm fairly sure this assumption is getting on a lot of people's tits.

Well if noone posts, there'll be noone who sees this poll, so, for discussion value..

Would you prefer a domestic dog or cat as a sidekick in your favourite videogame? - Assuming they have the same attack power either way.

Give only one reason why.

I like HL2. It's a very good game, with a very silent protagonist.

I don't care about the nature of my sidekick, as long as they are a smart-arse I'll like them.

No, I don't like Half-Life 2, I've tried to play it on both PC and Xbox 360 and neither version has held my attention, Half-Life 2 was clearly something revolutionary at the time of release but nowadays there're far superior action FPS games out there, and Half-Life's mix of poorly implemented gameplay styles doesn't interest me. That and I always feel physically ill after playing the game, it's something to do with the characters perspective according to the internet.

I guess much like most games it depends when you play the game, and your current expectations at that time. Morrowind is constantly heralded as far superior to Oblivion, but I can't get into it at all - the game isn't as immersive or interesting to me as Oblivion and the lack of a clear motivating goal makes the game a chore to find anything interesting - but that's a whole different argument. Half-Life 2's action set-piece don't flow very well, the game splits itself up to frequently, and often uses one mechanic for far to long [until it becomes mundane and boring] before switching to another - at least in the sections I've played.

Nope.
Maybe it was because everyone was saying it was jesus on a disc, but I found it to be a very mediocre game.

Neither a cat nor a dog; a hyperkinetic lagomorph shall be my sidekick. Do I really have to explain?

I still haven't even played it properly, so I haven't made my mind up. I found Half Life 1 pretty good though. I still haven't finished it, mind.

I've never met a witty, sarcastic, smack-talking dog or cat in a game, but hey, if you could name one, I'm curious.

I don't understand why people go like 'HL2 hasn't aged well' or 'HL2 has been surpassed by modern FPS titles'.

I mean, it's not like the FPS genre has evolved very much since then, has it?

Also, what the fuck is this?

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to answer the second question, stupid captcha distracting me...

Dog or cat dog or cat dog or cat dog or cat dog or cat dog or cat...

I would like a freaky mutant hybrid of the two that is also able to breathe underwater, for no tangible reason.

Amidoinitrite?

Even before running into the console players, it wasn't that rare. PC gamers tend to be more reverent towards it, but it was a really big deal when it came out. The first two Half-Life games have outsold the first two Halo games, so we're talking a major game. PC gamers tend to know how much Half-Life changed the way FPS were presented, changing both narrative and game play in a fairly major way. Moving story away from cutscenes into the game and using the environment to defeat opponents (beyond simply shooting a barrel to blow it up) were things you didn't see a lot of before Half-Life. After Half-Life, you were expected to do these things or be accused of being a throw-back to a less enlightened age.

Of course, the console fans mostly came in via Halo (or other games obviously inspired by Half-Life) and aren't blinded by how much the game altered the landscape. They judge it 100% on its merits as a game by today's standards and it's not unusual that they find it wanting.

Yes.

But I don't love it.

I'm spoiled by the likes of CoD where action is far more fast-paced and the controls are a bit more precise.

The story - good. The atmosphere - perfect. But not entirely my thing.

Above average game.

Sidekick of the cat protagonist is good enough for anyone.

It's a conspiracy conducted by bastards trying to distract you from answering the thread's second question.

I'd prefer a dog, because I've found them to be much more companionable in real life and they tend to look more intimidating.

I think I missed the bandwagon where people name threads with one subject and then have a totally irrelevant topic in the actual post. Maybe it's an Escapist thing.

Loving the thing above your avatar. :p

OT: I love it for the physics, the characters and the gunplay. It just feels...right. Nothing over the top, just a clever shooter.

I would prefer a cat because dogs have been done to death in games like Fallout and Fable.
