It depends entirely on the commentator. There was one guy who put an LP up of System Shock 2 and I found myself giggling at his silly comments about the evil space monkeys.

It depends on who is doing it. There's a lot of crappy Let's Players out there, but the select few that are good are really entertaining.
To name but a few good ones:
Kikoskia
Helloween4545
raocow
PhantomSavage
Snareplayer921

I reccomend you check them out if you haven't already done so :)

Generally speaking, I prefer narration. For example, when Mass Effect 2 came out, I tried watching two LPs of it; one had narration and the other did not. Guess which one I got bored out of my skull with?

Depending on the quality, narration can make or break an LP. If the narrator has an annoying voice, or talks over the in-game talking (decent narrators know when to shut up), it can make the playthrough unwatchable. Overall, though, a complete lack of vocal accompaniment is cripplingly dull for me.

Dull description of what you're doing is dull, in particular if it's just one person playing with only the audience to talk to. But it can be done well. I enjoy Pokecapn's LPs, particularly his ones of the bad Sonic games, because the conversation spices it up instead of just describing what's on screen.

Why would you watch a LP without narration? Doens't that beat the entire point?

aren't all lets plays just walkthroughs with commentary? if you don't want narration watch a walkthrough.
But most of the games I want videos for only have Lets Play, not walkthroughs.

Furthermore, I thought 'lets play' would mean playing the game, no 'lets talk bull'.

Text would be better though.

I like LP's and the idea of narration, but some people should just never be allowed near a mic.

I was watching one guy's LP of FF7 and he kept pronouncing Chocobo "Cocobo" and it made me want to drive a pitchfork into my eardrum. He eventually figured out he was mispronouncing it and switched to saying Chocobo, but then would forget and say Cocobo every other time, to the point where he was referring to all Male Chocobos as Cocobos and all Females as Chocobos.

That and his voice was just really annoying and he was a crazy cat man who talked about his three cats constantly.

let's talk about is a worse title, but i always thought of lets play as a reverse unskippable type thing, where they're mostley quiet throughout the cutscenes but talk through gameplay.

also, imagine if in unskippable they didn't talk. they just showed you the cut scene because people wanted to hear it, it'd be bad.

Funny that this topic is brought up, beacuse this is an issue I am dealing with as a Let's Play narrator right now.

On one hand, I recognise the fact that I have a grating voice and that I lack any sort of sense of humour. Plus, considering the length of even a single mission, I don't have enough material to actually talk all the time anyway. So most of the time while I am playing I remain quiet.

On the other, however, I NEED to talk, since most people are unfamiliar with the type of game I am LPing and that requires at least a certain amount of explanation. Plus, if I do not voice act the cutscenes (even thought I have zero skill in voice acting), the videos end up feeling like they are missing something.

Sadly, I currently few viewers and even they are not commenting, so I do not have any feedback to work on yet. But it is an issue I (and probably every other LPer) encountered and that I am aware of.

Anyway, I personally do sometimes watch Let's Plays. However, the only ones I currently watch regularly are from RanshinDA and AltEisenSpirit. Both are entertaining in their own way.

Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.

If it's a Let's Play, there better be narration (bonus points if it's funny), but if it's just plain gameplay footage, I prefer not to have narration.
This exactly.
I like narration when it's a Let's Play, opinions and commentary are nice and it's best when they're funny. But if I'm just watching gameplay to see if it's a game I'd like, then no. I just want them to be quiet so I can hear what the game has to offer, not the player. xD

The whole point of a Let's Play is to have narration. It's meant to be a commentary, usually funny, first, and a walkthrough/showcase for the game second.

It depends if it's; Official e.g(Rooster Teeth) or if they're just generally funny. But if it's like a fifteen year old who is explaining how he 'owns everyone' then it annoys the ass out of me

Er... Let's Plays just about always contain commentary. I wouldn't have it any other way. Without narration, there's no point to a let's play - it's basically chronicling their adventures through the game.

Walkthroughs, which normally do not contain commentary, seem to be what you're looking for, OP.

Unskippable is completely different. They're making fun of cutscenes. Lets Play narrators try to give 'insightful' information to a game, but end up being really droning most of the time (although I am aware there are a minority who are insightful).

when i was thinking of buying Brütal Legend (cus of its awesomeness, and Jack Black) i watched a "Lets play Brütal Legend!", hoping to see a playthrough that could tell me whether it was as awesome as i thought.

Then i get two thing:
1. some awesome footage of an awesome game
and 2. A snot nosed whiny little popculture fan boy, who didnt know a thing about the metal culture the game is built on! (or how to do something as simple as walking up to a communication device, and pressing a button.)

So no! i dont like lets play narrators.

Yes, I love them. Sometimes I watch walkthroughs even when I've completed the game, just because of the commentary. I like to watch narrated stuff - Rifftrax, Unskippable, etc. You really have to appreciate their effort. I've made several Dead Space "Let's play" walkthroughs but eventually I got tired. It consumes time (recording, editing) and HDD space.
