when I am goofing around with friends we use them every now and then. But no one uses them to write an entire conversation with it.

I never used to, but sometimes they slip in. But it really depends on the culture of the place. In places like forums I try to limit them to a minimum, but on IM, it's just quicker to whack in a brb.

I don't ever replace you or for with 4 or u, because that makes me kill crazy. And people who spell was as 'woz' should just explode. IT'S NOT EVEN A GODDAMN ABBREVIATION.

I also smack in a 'I lol'd' in real life sometimes, but not instead of actual laughter because that would be creepy.
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes people think they're abbreviating, when really all they're doing is spelling a word wrong.

I love net speak in satirical contexts.

When people are honest-to-shit talking like that because it's the easiest way they have of expressing themselves, though... No. I hate it. It makes my brain hurt.

It just doesn't make any sense! This also applies to people who replace 'c' with 'k'. *eyetwitch*

I'm fairly easy going but 'woz' 'coz' and 'ur' make my nostrils flare with a self righteous sense of rage. Then again this is the internet, the home of nostril flaring rage.

I don't mind them if used in a friendly environment. They get more annoying when used in a more open environment. They're just wrong to use in oral speech.

And I agree with everyone else about mispelling words on purpose and using a single letter or number in place of a whole word... ignorance and laziness. Not cool.

It bothers me alot. Though some more than others.

For example lol essentialy means that you think somthing was funny. I often use hah or haha, to get the same effect. But that dosen't bother me so much. But when it becomes lawl or some such it becomes a problem. Its gone from a time saving acronym to stupid slang.

It's like people that spell the, teh. Theres no logical reasoning besides that they want to be part of a group or club.

But whenever I see people typing things out like "ur gay", I file them under idiots to be ignored. And I guess if you're happy in that possition good for you, but if you want the general populace to respect you, make an attempt to type things out correctly.

Exactly. I meant to include that in my post, but forgot about it. Whenever I want to get the point of laughter across I almost always us "haha", or actually say something along the lines of "That made me laugh!".

When I'm talking to my friends over AIM, or Facebook, or texting, I use things like "lol" "lmao" lmfao" and the faces XD :) :p to put a little more emotion into what I say and to make sure people realize when I'm joking, but that's it. Whenever I hear someone say "LOL" in real life, unless I know they're just kidding around, it makes me want to slap them across the face with a dictionary.

EDIT: Oh... but "lolz" hurts my brain, and "noice" makes me want to kill something. Unfortunately, some friends of mine do that all the time.

None of those in the title piss me off, but what does is shortening words that have no reason to be shortened.

Like have becomes hav
don't becomes dn't
please becomes plese (yes I've seen this)

IT'S ONE LETTER AND I CAN'T UNDERSTAND YOU WITHOUT IT

They're all annoying. The worst I've heard is "lolacaust". I heard some kid say that, and I wanted to smack him.

I hate it when people say lol and use other internet terms like that in regular conversation, but online, texting and typing is ok I reckon

I don't mind using/seeing: lol, rofl, lmao, afk, brb ... etc.
But when people start using abbreviations like: omgitlwurw2d (whatever that means) I really get annoyed.

BUT, the dinosaur sized bone I have to pick with this topic is this:
In normal, real life conversation. A few weeks ago I told a joke to my mates and one of them actually went:
"hahaha lol ahahaha."

and I near smacked my gob and what had just happened. He used an abbreviation (something to shorten a word which is too long to type/say quickly) to suggest laughter.

So I gave him a swift smack across the face and he hasn't said it since.

But to answer your question more directly:

If it's in a game, or online chat, it's OK (providing its under, say ... 4 letters)
If it's in real life, give them a swift headbutt to the nose for me :)

Since "lol" means either "lots of laughs" or "laughing out loud" and is mostly used at the end of a sentence which - I assume- is intended to be funny, it instantly conjures the images of a fat kid in his mother's basement staring at a computer screen and laughing out loud at his own poor jokes.

That really is a sad, sad image, and slightly disturbing.

Of course, "rofl" is even worse when you think about it.

I only blatant chatspeak if I'm being sarcastic, or if I'm instant messaging I'll use "roflmao".

Just using lol from time to time. It gets on my nerves when someone in real life says lol though..
