Information I need:

1) Do you like WoW style gameplay? If not, what are you looking for?

2) Are you willing to subscribe or not?

another for rift, but if you don't mind paying $15 bucks a month still (as posted before the F2P is nickle and dimed) star wars the old republic is a nice alternative to wow as its a lot like what wow used to be.

WoW pretty much is still King of the Hill, and one of the few MMOs still worth playing.

TERA was great - good art style, great combat, good progression. But its population DIED, it had poor (and has) end-game content, and its structured PvP isn't very good. Afflicted by the curse of Free-To-Play.

Guild Wars 2 could've been great - its fun to level for a bit, has good art and a somewhat interesting story. But the endgame doesn't exist in most ways (and where it does isn't very good), its skills system is too limited compared to other games (including GW1) and its world PvP idea just doesn't work terribly well.

The Old Republic; lets just get it out of the way. The Old Republic is a shitty version of WoW with a Star Wars skin and voice-acted custscenes. Afflicted by the curse of Free-To-Play AND the curse of EA.

EVE is like taking a second job that YOU pay to work at.

RIFT is probably your only safe bet for something that might be fun.

Eve is about as far from WoW as you can get, I'd recommend it if you like doing spreadsheets to calculate profits if you want to even begin to succeed at mining. As for the battles it's much slower paced. Not to mention anything is legal, if someone ganks you, you won't be getting your cargo back...

Well the only one of these I've played is GW2. It's probably the only game that I will never actually finish because I find it so incredibly boring. I haven't even managed to get past level 10 because I get bored so quickly with this game. I started as a human thief but was bored before getting to level 7. Then I tired a Charr elementalist thinking it would be more fun. I was right, I didn't get bored until level 10.

Someone else already mentioned Borderlands 2 and I am inclined to agree with them. It's not really an MMO but it is a lot of fun to play with friends. Fast and varied gameplay, awesome loot, huge variety in how you can play (seriously, try melee Zer0, it's incredibly satisfying), a good story, lots of funny dialogue, and a great challenge too.

With school being over and a massive amount of free time now on my hands, the MMO bug has bit once again. I used to love playing WoW, but am currently unhappy with what they have done to the talent trees, spells and some of the tweaks to the weapons and armor. So, are there any good MMOs out there that you can recommend for me? The poll lists a few I have heard good things about, but there are many more out there.

I am looking for something with replay value, something that will keep me coming back because there is always something new (not necessarily because they keep releasing content but because there is alot to see), and somethings that gives me a chance to create my own character, not a cookie-cutter hero.

Look, I voted Eve Online but, going purely off your previous choice of MMO, it's probably not for you. Eve Online is the only proper sandbox style MMO currently active, and it's fantastic, but if you don't understand it you end up like the many posts who will say "it's a second job!". I've made quite a few posts trying to provide a decent introduction to the game, so if you actually want to take a look at it feel free to PM me. It's just nothing like WoW - in fact, WoW is often used as the exact opposite of what Eve Online should look like. If you get it, you will keep coming back.

Guild Wars II is probably your best bet here. It does, however, have a reasonably high barrier for entry without a trial and a larger, albeit singular, fee to play. I've heard great things about Rift and I enjoyed The Old Republic - the latter is about a close to WoW you're going to see. If you like Star Wars it might be for you.

Quotes like these make me laugh and cringe at the same time. Eve Online has the least necessary grind of any MMO I've played, yet I keep seeing "second job" comparisons. Did you just mine, or mission? Actually, come to think of it, did you actually play the game? It wouldn't be the first time I've seen people share their opinions about Eve Online without actually playing it.

Voted for EvE Online.

It's a game I believe every MMO enthusiast should have tried at least once. Chances are you won't like it, it's definitely not for everyone. But it's an unique experience and well worth downloading the free trial for.

If you get it then it's most definitely the best thing out there. If you don't then it was just a free trial, no harm done.

I vote for Rift if you're just after something like WoW.

Personally I recomend LOTRO. Really mature community(will feel like heaven if you're used to the WoW crowd), great atmosphere and it kept me coming back almost daily for over three years. Pretty sick of it at the moment though since every expansion since Mines of Moria has been worse and worse.
Still, definetly worth a try. Combat is slower than in WoW in the beginning, but you'll be overwhelmed by skills after a while. Can tell you more about the F2P system, which is awesome, if you're intrested.

Fallen Earth. Post-apoc setting with hybrid shooter combat (there are still hotkey skills, but you have to manually aim your guns.) There are no classes, so character builds are freeform and skill based. It has a wonderful atmosphere, and a very deep crafting system.

Or if you want something a little closer to WoW I'd recommend LOTRO. It's more trad, gameplay wise, but the realisation of the game world is second to none.

Neverwinter Online seems good, and it's in open beta from what I heard. I only played in closed beta once, seemed nice.

Guild Wars 2 not so much, I got bored at about lvl 40 and from what I heard from a friend, not much endgame content. Oh, and there is grind as well, maybe a bit more hidden. MMO without grind, can't believe I fell for that "manifesto"... But at least it's a one time pay, just buy it and play until the first expansion with no worries.

If you like WoW a lot and want something different, TERA might be something for you. It's F2P now, and it's got superb combat (hint: don't play mage, try slayer or warrior). You do, however, need to be a bit more active than in WoW and you also normally use a crosshair to aim your attacks, which could make it more difficult for you. No hit-or-miss stat stuff, too - there's a dedicated dodge maneuver (which catapults you into your chosen ditection, clipping through enemies if necessary). It's also based off of Unreal 3, so it has VERY steep RAM requirements and a lot of CPU hunger. It's easy on the graphics card though, you can run this on maximal settings with an HD6670. The HW with which I was able to max all the settings out at 30 frames per second: i3-3220, 8GB DDR3-1333 RAM, Gigabyte HD6670 1GB DDR3 (yes it's the slow one). If you want fluid 60 frames per second, you'll have to get something along the lines of an HD7770/GTX660(Ti).

I offer you "The Secret World".. as it is *by far* the most unique MMO available, and quite good.
I agree, the setting is one of a kind and the gameplay side is quite original, too.

GW2 cemented my absence from WoW. I don't play it as often now, but it's still a fine game with some flaws. They did a few things (resource nodes, group events, and looting) extremely well and in ways I expect to see other MMOs use in the future. Dungeon group finder is non existent. Things like WvWvW (3 server PvP) are great ideas, but filled with flaws. I would definitely check it out, and you will certainly get your money worth (initial purchase of the game is only needed charge and they have dropped it down 40% for a weekend a few times already) in playtime, but its not the end all be all.

Neverwinter is interesting - leans on DDO here and there and I personally loathe the 4th edition rules even before they were modified for the game, but its not bad. The player created Foundry stuff is kinda cool, but needs a lot of work - it doesn't differentiate between languages, so you can easily end up in a French/German dialog quest. The HUD is a little funky too. But as it is 100% free, there's really no reason not to check it out.

SW:TOR is kinda fun to play through once. The amount of voice acting is amazing. End game content is by far the worst, and it has quite the grind.

Eve Online: I am biased as hell against this game. I played a free month and on the second week, I got to be present during that blessed time wherein the game deleted windows boot files. Weee.... The paid to fix the comp and gave me a free year, but I barely played it at all in that time. I essentially found it an economic grinder with the odd chance of having to start over when someone destroys your ship.

Long story short, go check out GW2

Neverwinter is pretty good for the parameters you're after.

I had a nice experience with it while getting to 60 but a huge part of the game I feel is the Foundry which doesn't have the dedicated community it needs just yet. The Foundry works as a creation program and distributor for user made content, a great idea but it does rely on the users creating the content which isn't the first thing an avid MMO play would like to do. BUT! I can't stress this enough! Users can be the most powerful tool a game has, especially an MMO like this. It all means an endless amount of content for the players, once those the likes of Warcraft 3 custom mappers get there hands on it.
Once those in the niche find it, that game can last forever.

This is really the only thing that can come close to the scale of WoW due to WoW having the chance and player base for them to keep putting in fresh content every year. Though I believe with the right chances Neverwinter can become something great!
[sub]I'm an idealist...[/sub]

I invested in the chance that it takes off by getting a character to 60.
You should do the same and see if you like it, it is free to play.

I liked the vast world WoW provided, as well as the crafting and the talent tree system BEFORE Cataclysm (where you didn't have to complete a tree before you picked something from another tree). I like the customization it had and the freedom the players were allowed. The PvP games themselves (capture the flag, territories, etc.) were okay, but not the main reason I played. Those were just one of the perks.

In short, I guess, I am looking for a good story, player creativity and replay / continued play value.

I do not mind subscribing but I would like to test it out first, so a game that offers a trial program would be nice. Free to Play is also fine, provided there is some stuff to do before you have to shell out cash to continue playing.

UPDATE: Thank you to all those who have made suggests. I know it is kinda late in the game, but I have added (or attempted to add) Rifts to the Poll, as many have suggested that I try it and, to be honest, I had completely forgotten about it. If you do not see Rifts and would like to suggest it, click "Other" and post a comment.

If you have a different suggestion, please do not hesitate to post!

Again, thank you to all who have made a suggestion thus far.

Hi guy. I'm a bit late to this question, but I thought I'd chime in. Long time MMO player here. Let's take a look at your poll.

1. DDO Online. Somehow got one vote, deserves none. Despite being the poster child for re-invigoration via FTP way back in the day, this game was basically dead on arrival and never achieved critical mass. I'm not even sure I'd recommend it to someone doing a retro MMO binge.

2. Guild War 2 is the strongest MMO on this list, and arguably the WORST "WoW replacement" on the market. You have likely heard at least one person refer to GW2 as "a WoW clone", as they share a stylized aesthetic and are both MMOs. They are incorrect. In many ways, GW2 is a distaff counterpart to WoW, and not all its deviations are improvements. By all means try it if you wish, it's a fine game in it's own right, but it is not a "lifestyle MMO" like WoW. It is not a game you should expect to play for months or years. It lacks the progression treadmill that keeps other MMOs engaging (if something of a prison for your free time), while simultaneously having the sub-optimal play mechanics of an MMO...thus paling beside more conventional "just play it for fun" games.

3. Champions Online. Is rubbish. There might be someone out there who really enjoyed that game, and if so I'd like to hear from that person, because I fear they may have a fever. Poorly made superhero game with a galling aesthetic and shoddy game play. City of Heroes flew circles around it, and City of Heroes wasn't even a particularly good MMO.

4. EVE Online. EVE is its own thing, hermetically sealed away from the rest of the MMO genre. Like GW2, it is a wild departure from WoW. Unlike GW2, it IS a game you could expect to play for months, or years. Assuming you made it through the opening week. The game is notoriously impenetrable to new players, and time has only made it more hostile. If this was 5-6 yeas ago I'd say YES. At this point, I think EVE is best left to the EVE-hards.

5. Rift. Rift is probably the most similar game to WoW in terms of play model, with the benefit of smoother, more modern mechanics and the detriment of significantly less personality and breadth. I would tentatively recommend Rift, in part based on its imminent transition to FTP, with one major caveat. Trion has recently been HAMMERED by major layoffs due in large part to the horrible reception for Defiance, and I fear what that will mean for the future of Rift. It's already limping along with a pretty small player base, and no one likes playing a less than vital/lively MMO.

Other options you're likely to hear:

1. TOR. Good short term game, bad long term game. Horrible business model.
2. TSW. Bordering on maintenance mode due to terrible initial sales. Not a particularly good game.
3. TERA. Holding its own in FTP, but very, VERY old-school grind-mechanics. Think old Lineage or Aion.
4. Neverwinter. Grasping, hyper linear Fee-To-Play game. Fun enough, but definitely not a long term game.

If I were in your shoes, I would be waiting for Wildstar (~6 mos out), and then later for Titan (~2-4 years out). The former is shaping up to be the heir apparent to vanilla WoW in many respects, the latter is, of course, made by Blizzard themselves and will have a mind-boggling budget behind it.

Wildstar:

It's just gone into the next stage of its closed beta, and all the feedback coming out of beta and trade shows has bordered on the ridiculously glowing. I recommend doing a little digging on it, there's plenty of info out there. Carbine seems to have the best handle on what makes MMOs actually *work* of the many developers currently out there.

If you require more in-depth commentary on any one game I can provide it. Except for Champions Online. Because I barely played it. Because it's terrible.
