After most major disasters, you hear about looting. People stealing from stores or buisnesses beacuse the owner ran, etc. I think it's okay if they need the stuff, or if it's a big time store that wouldn't suffer too much (Walmart, etc). Stealing from houses is cold, they already suffered alot. If the house is about to be destroyed, then possibly, because the stuff would get ruined anyway.

In the middle of the apocalypse, I don't think I'll worry too much about this. But in a more serious manner...

Stealing provisions and medical supplies is okay.
Stealing televisions and microwaves is not.

I'm not going to go so far as to say that it's singularily wrong in every case, but it is stealing.

I would, morally speaking, deal with in exactly the same way I deal with stealing: You only do it if your or someone elses life depends on it. You don't do it for kicks, you don't do it because it by some twisted piece of logic 'wouldn't hurt the one your stealing from too much'. That is bad and a crime.

But looting when the item in question really can save a life without costing someone else a life... it is still a crime, but at least it is a morally justifiable one.

It's no different from regular theft, unless you have to steal food or medicine to survive.

If it's a disaster scenario, you really need stuff like food, clean (bottled) water, or medicine and you're cut off from all legal means of acquiring them, you should be allowed to take it. A human life is worth more than a few stolen goods.

Unfortunately, if you talk about looting it usually means people running for the big-screen TVs and stuff. In that case, they're taking advantage of an already chaotic situation and they deserved to be punished most severely.

Usually it isn't stuff like food or clothing though, it's like TV's and sound systems.

Depends, do you need it?

If you need it, it's a more acceptable form of theft
If you don't, it's just theft.

Now how do you feel about theft itself? I'm talking about theft ranging from Candy to Cars.

Looting should be acceptable if everyone is doing it. Same goes for jumping of cliffs.

If it's just left there and the one in charge has no intents on coming back to retrieve it then the items are just ripe for the picking.

If I what I was looting was something I needed to survive, like food/water, then I would take it without a second thought.

I'm going agree with this. If they need it, Fine. If not, then don't steal you, you greedy bastard. And I don't want to hear "Well I got the food I needed, but...I need to wash it down right? Some water...Oh and their microwave to heat this food...Plus I need to be entertained right? So gimmeh that TV!

That's the problem with the 'Only if they need it' I think it's more of a minor offense given teh circumstances. Or if they leave it behind they're not really gonna need it.

If Fallout 3 taught me anything, it's that if someone leaves crap lying around the Wasteland, let them fight me for it.

Personally, I think its kind of a reality of things that would happen in a large disaster. I think that people will scavenge and look for things to help them or out of need- and if it were my house that was empty, on account of me and my family leaving for our own safety...

I've honestly already considered all of the valuable stuff left behind to be gone. But its not important. It can all be replaced, and the mementos or sentimental things can still be remembered without tangible objects
