I offer you an alternative...
What enchantment is on that?
I'd wager Soul Trap, judging from purple aura.

If you're going stealth, take a character that supports it like Janessa or Faendal, Lydia is a warrior and will always try to charge in.
Indeed It was soul trap, She's such a faithful Housecarl, looking over the home even after ... the 'accident'.
So your Skyrim plan is...
1) Find a companion
2) Find/Make a sword
3) ??? (no one knows, as there were no witnesses)
4) Profit...by selling an enchanted sword that just happens to have the same name as your recently deceased companion.

Why sell her? I need someone to look after the home while I'm away.

Ah, Lydia...

The first time she died for me... I accidentally slit her throat while attempting to assassinate a bandit with my soul-trap blade.

I happen to keep The Black Star on me at all times.

Interestingly enough, I did the same thing as the fellow with the picture... smithed her soul right into a nice piece of equipment. Although I put it in her armor, instead.

I still keep it on display at my house in Riften.

Yeah...I was just enjoying the fact that I could make every step in that meme make sense for once. You're devious, though. Poor Lydia. At least you didn't put her into a pair of shoes.

Hahaha!

... I turned an Argonian friend of my assassin into a pair of boots. That was oddly humorous to me.

The only reason she "isn't strong" is because you aquire her at a low level, and the companion leveling is broken. On PC if you just disable her then enable her again via console, she gains all the hp and stats she is otherwise missing. Then she's a total beast. I watched her more or less solo 2 giants and 3 mammoths lol.

Proof: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/594704438487588367/0A45C71DFDCE47D76F6269857D14206D68A0B037/
(note: I'm a mage and was trying to gain souls with my bound bow... of course I have 0 archery skills so I did very, very little dmg)
I did that and now Lydia practily clears dungeons for me. the correct console code is:
a2c94.disable
a2c94.enable

In one of the forts that you can go left or right and eventualy get back to the same entry without zoning I lost her after enetering and choosing a direction to go, well met back up with her less than halfway through it and she killed everything on her way to meet me. when i met up with her she was finishing a roomfull of bandits. I was impressed but for some reason wished i followed her as it mustve been epic.

theres been a few other moments like when she goes on alert and runs off down a tunnel with her bow out, draws at the exit and snipes some poor fool then charges in and dispatches another with her sword thats just awesome to watch. but usualy she acts a fool and gets lost or stuck someplace. "a2c94.moveto player" is a very handy command when she gets the stupids while traveling overland instead of a road.

I thought the CM mod companions for oblivion were much better, you could give them more commands like loot or collect ingredients, plus you could have as many as your PC could handle. Mine was 6 companions and all i had to do was enter the dungeon or whatever and give them a group command to loot the place. all 6 would take off running in search of chests or corpses and if they ran across something live and agressive they quickly dispatched them. I think the followers in Skyrim is based off the idea of the CM mod to have usefull followers instead of that punk that is impressed you are the grand champion.

Side note and quite funny if you have Lydia while doing the J'zargo quest. she will agro you if she gets injured by his scroll. Maybe a bug i dont know but she was quite a challenge until i reloaded the save.

Well, for role-playing purposes, Lydia and my Redguard character are pretty much inseparable. Our relationship has evolved too much for me to just do away with her. What started with her being forced by oath to serve me, evolved into a close friendship and bond after several adventures and now even love. I have a gold diamond ring hidden in my chest for when we eventually get married too. Everytime I set out on an adventure or quest from Whiterun, she comes along and together we get through everything, through thick and thin and to be honest, she's been an amazing help for me. Since I play on Master difficulty, I can use a little help now and again and she delivers.

Armoured in Ebony plate and rocking a Scimitar (like me :D), she has been invaluable to my adventures and I actually don't plan on having any other characters unless I'm at a certain area in the game world and Lydia is back in Whiterun.

She also looks nice, with a silver moonstone circlet around her head and a silver sapphire necklace, she looks like a warrior princess. I tell you, with my battered scaled armour, compared to her, it would look like I'm HER housecarl xD

Yeah Your not alone had the same problem, I just leave them alone altogether, the AI in this game is pretty shocking, friendly and enemy. Though its my GOTY.

Leave at home, always. It would be like having a constant escort mission.

Granted, Lydia died of causes unknown there due to a...bug or glitch I assume. I found her dead on the kitchen floor. Nothing was missing from the house though, so all was good.

I am doing the same thing on this roll. when i make new armor and weapons i make the same set for her, weapons usualy are the same but a different enchant so i may have shock and frost enchant and she could have shock and fire. but hers looks so much better. I have grown attached to having her around and she has been an invaluable companion.

Did you find the murder weapon?

See, the devs could have made an awesome 'whodunnit' style quest out of a random event like this.
Nope...She didn't even have a weapon pulled out. I thought she tripped on the stairs.

But now I want to find one of those quests.

Lydia? You mean the Housecarl? Attending to my wife and house chores..

Wait, did I say attending to my wife? Oh dang stuff got real :V
Anyway I left her at home because I'm a stealther. I completed the game on my own that way.
Companions are... setting off traps (pressure plate immume me, not so immume them), charging into fights I could have easily won by picking them off one by one.

Generally, they serve their purpose if you're a warrior or a laid back mage / archer. But as a stealther urgh.. (though I suppose it's also because of the dragonplate armor that she wears that makes her loud and clumsy)

Lydia's not that great if you're using Area of Effect spells since she'll inevitably get caught in them, but I have got her to use a Flames staff or a bow and arrow on occasion. I gave her a set of Dwarven Armour to increase her survivability, but I still send her home when I have to go past traps with Whirlwind Sprint.

Yeah, and it also kills the 'loneliness' of exploring vast expanses of world and dungeons all by yourself when you have a companion. I find at least.
Yeah i do find it more fun to have someone there even if they just stand there and look at you. I discovered that in Oblivion with the Cm mod. I would often turn and look at my followers and say good job when we completed a tough fight. or give thanks when one saved my ass by drawing agro from me. When I roll a stealth character i will miss having a follower, but that may actualy be some time as i am still doing a sword and board main with archery and magic side.

I would actualy enjoy being able to do meals and camp setups with a follower. it would be good to be able to make a campsite anywhere and have to cook food for dinner. simple command of lets make camp and you do A. chow or B. tent and player does the other. after alls done sleep for a few hours.

Lydia is only good as a loot hauler. I equipped her in full legendary Ebony armor and a legendary paralyzing ebony greatsword, and she still got her ass kicked regularly.

For your combat companion needs, I present to you the most badass mage in Skyrim...

SNIP

This mf'er takes on whole packs of Falmer Shadowmasters and even a damned Dwemer Centurion Master SOLO and in Apprentice Robes.

Also, he prefers lightning spells. I think he's secretly a sith kitty.
This is because how the game sets follower's level.

When you first enter the zone your future follower is in, it sets their level to your current one.
So, Lydia, being tied in the main story is usually set to level 1 or 2 depending on how fast you get to Whiterun.

They level up when you do, however, due to what is believed to be a bug, their stats don't increase when they level up, so Lydia stays level 1-2 throughout the game.

Pc gamers can use the console to reset her so she'll become your new current level.

Well, I actually role-play that sort of thing myself. Lydia and I will have some food, usually some meat and some vegetables with some wine for Lydia and mead for me and if we're out in the wilderness, I will sleep for 4 or so hours, then wake up, command Lydia to get into bed and then wait for an equal length of time thus taking watch while the other sleeps. If we're staying at a tavern, well self-explanatory and if we're at home, we sleep together.

While having dinner or breakfest, I actually tell her to wait then command her to sit down at a table or whatever, then sit next to her and eat/wait/read a book whatever. When you use your imagination to role-play, the experience can really be improved a whole lot. I also sometimes create small conversations between me and her, adding depth to it all.

There is something comforting about having Lydia there, day and night, even watching me sleep.

Did I see comforting, I mean creepy.

Lydia sucks, I accidentally killed her when I was fighting a Chaurus. Don't get in my way when I'm using fire breath. >_<
