I ask for your opinion on this aspect of some FPS online games

Here's my example

Playing CoD 4 with the LMG RPD I was having a generally fun time with this gun as I managed to hold off attacks in certain key spots on certain maps (call me a camper if you must :D) with the only thing I had to worry about was the slow ass reloading time. It was generally a fun experience but after a while I wanted to play something different so I started up BF 2142.

As I entered a Camp Gilbasomething map (Infantry map) I decided to play the support class remembering playing CoD 4, untill my first fire fight when I remembered I could only fire for a short time before I overheated the gun and had to watch as I was gunned down mercilessly. I was playing with the default support gun so I decided to use the HMG unlock I acquired figuring I'd be able to take targets down faster before I overheated but still to no avail and it was really frustrating not being able to defend key areas from multiple opponents before my gun was rendered useless for a few crucial seconds.

So it got me thinking whether having a realistic overheating mechanism on LMG's is a good thing or just a pain in the ass...your thoughs? :)

It always depends what sort of game it is, if it's trying to be realistic I'm all for it. In Team Fortress 2 for instance it just wouldn't work if the Heavy's minigun overheated.

When you mention a gameplay mechanic like this I'm gonna have to bring up Red Orchestra. Firing an LMG non-stop would cause the barrel to overheat and you'd lose accuracy dramatically until you'd eventually have to change the barrel to continue using it. It really encourages you to be conservative and fire in bursts which is perfect for a game like RO... this brings me back to the point that it all depends on the game.

meh it never really affects me, I always fire in accurate bursts as I like to keep my accuracy up in the stats.

I dislike COD5s way of keeping the LMGs balanced though, no overheating but give them a tiny clip and hardly any extra ammo.

It's all about the bursts...
With skill you can keep an MG firing indefinitely in BF, the overheating is their way of ensuring campers (whom I have nothing against, being one) don't ruin other people's fun.

I'd love to see this implemented in say future CODs. See all those noob tube sprayers get their hands burned.

To be honest i have yet to see a game with "realistic" overheating. BF2's MG overheating is nothing like real life overheating.

In real life your gun's barrel will slowly melt causing accuracy to go down, but There's no magical bar that stops you from shooting, you just melt your gun's barrel over some length of continous bursting.

(As a side note though real guns don't overheat nearly that fast.)

I'm for it.

Although I'm waiting for a game where you can piss on a gun to make it cool down faster.

I'm for it, since it keeps noobs from holding the trigger down.

how is it realistic in anyway? it not design to be so everyone stop saying that, it was a way to make the guns balanced, and it works better in some games than others

"Reality is a cruel and unintuitive place with frustrating gameplay mechanics." It might be realistic to have a LMG overheat, but it's just annoying.

What a strange subject for a poll...

Anyway, I'm totally for. I am sick of being sprayed with the MG42 in COD:WAW.
Let's see if he can be nooby with his fingers burned off!

I'd rather machineguns have a limited amount of ammo than an overheat. Or a more responsive trigger (like real life mg's lol) that can control the heat.
Most machine guns don't actually have a 'responsive trigger'. They take a lot more pressure and require more distance for the trigger to cover before they will fire. Even a LMG like the 249SAW will take longer to start firing than an M16 (if they both start from 0 trigger pressure)

Luckily most games don't let you haul around a .50 cal machine gun. Good luck getting anything big like that to fire before you're shot a few times by something small.

This is a realistic part that i'm glad they have in games. Makes it feel more real. Also, you'd have to fire a MG continously with a lot more ammo than the 1 "clip" worth that they give you in most video games. You'd literally have to go through over 5 or 600 rounds before the barrel starts overheating. Even then, the metal stays pretty rigid until it turns red and starts to bend...

Totally for. It prevents noobs from unloading a 200 round clip with no breaks in between. On the other hand, I don't see why it's a problem in 2142; the gun is overpowered anyway. For christ's sake, it gets MORE accurate as you fire!

I'm for. It makes the game a lot more realistic and stops n00bs from camping as much, since they can't keep on with continuous fire. Take the plasma rifle of Halo, for instance. As well as overheating, it is extremely powerful against armour and the overheating counters this, as well as adds to the realism (if there really was such a thing as a plasma weapon, then it would be ridiculously hot after each burst of fire!). That said, I myself am guilty of camping so I can't argue too much there...
