I figured it out, but I still agree it was a terrible game all around.

You know, I didn't really use magic in that game for anything more'n junctions...but I may be playing it wrong.

I don't think I ever used any offensive magic in that game. It looked more like "draw yourself better stats" system, since junctioning best magic to strength gave much higher damage output than spending that magic would have been. And when you junction 100 blinds to status attack, your every hit blinds... kind of obsoletes the whole magic casting command. Nevertheless I enjoyed the game, when everything seemed to have connection. Triple Triad card game was fun and you could extract magic and items from those cards you got.

Well, watch Spoony's review [http://www.spoonyexperiment.com/category/final-fantasy-viii/] and then you tell me.

I dont mind junctioning magicka, i believe thats what it was. The magika system in FF8, however, has a lot of flaws that allow for easy exploitation. For example, I remember junctioning my Zombie magika (why is it that that word ends up in almost every post? gah) to my main characters weapon, which zombified the target. Using the restore ability of another character would instakill the zombied target.

I was confused by the system, but at the end, it did work. I mostly didn't like the easy exploitation and the magika farming.

FF8 was the last ff game i played and finished. Got too much like watching a bad movie.

It wasn't TOO bad, but it was just way too tedious. Combined with the Junction system, I never cast most of the spells I got (Aura and the curing ones being obvious exceptions), because it'd be too much of a pain to get them back, IF you fought the right monsters to draw from. Maybe if Draw had been more potent, especially for Zell...

So kudos to Square for trying something new, but I think there's a reason that system hasn't been used in an FF game since.

It gets more flak than it deserves, but definitely needed more polishing before being released. The ability to put things like pain and drain in the status attack slot doesn't leave a whole of incentive to actually have a casting oriented character and it was tedious using up some of the older, crappier status magic you didn't really need anymore like sleep.

FF8's not too bad. Quite frankly, aside from healing spells, I rarely used magic in the game for anything other than augmenting stats (which thankfully isn't necessary to do). The world itself was pretty cool and the story was charming, if unusually...convenient in some places (I'll avoid spoilers, but the keyword is 'orphans'...).

It is a fun game for the most part, and it tried a lot of new things. If only for the experience, I would play it at least once.

I'd say theres nothing to be worried about. It depends though. It was my first FF game, and I absolutely adored it then (and still do). if you have played all the others, and can't stand a radically different magic system to the others then don't buy it. I never had the issues that so many people had with the characters. Squalls a bit of a jerk, but he's less obnoxious than Tidus, so if you could stand him in FFX, then VIII shouldn't be a problem.
