What a thread not about a videogame in a gaming thread how could this be?! I thought about making this thread for the last two days now and figured ah F^(# it its a game aint it. I figured you awesome folks could tell me more about this fun card game and maybe share some stories about people you have played or cards you have gotten. Also since I'm a newb at this game maybe some pointers would be good. By the way I currently play red black

My last deck is a 6/7 W/B birdie "Zerg-with-flying" deck. Did okay in a group setting; then I kind of lost interest due to Warcraft 3 and its glorious map editor.

No tips from me, I'm afraid! I bought a premade blue deck along with booster packs, and I couldn't even tell you what edition. Still, I liked the focus of blue magic and the way you had to consider the battlefield or how you wanted it to look later in a match. Didn't mean I didn't get dragged through the mud by opponents, but it suited me! Not to mention the most fun I had typically came from creating a themed deck.

Blue is also my favorite color. I have to assume that's a criterion.

I used to play MTG back in the 90s, still have my decks actually. Would be interesting to see which cards are banned now, which cards are worthless now because of new abilities and which cards are so old and forgotten that they are not ever encountered. Decks are White/Blue for 1v1, Black/Red/Artifact for FFA and a green deck to annoy people in 4v4 matches.

When I first started playing magic Stronghold was the newest set. This was 1997-1998. I will never forget the day I bought a pack with a queen sliver in it

Anyway, I havnt played in years but I always liked black decks or white decks. My white deck was composed of numerous angles, smaller soldiers, and my most badass creature ever the Serra Avatar.

My black deck was a "shadow creature" deck where I put as many shadow creatures as I possibly could into it with as many drain life and discard spells I could fit. It was especially effective with the rack, the cursed rack, and a pair of megrims.

My first deck was a green/white farm deck. If I'm up on my terminology, that means I try to get as much mana as possible to drop the big fuckers who can tear shit up. Next was a green/white token deck, build for Ravnica. If I could survive the first five turns, I'd win usually. My latest deck is a white/red speed deck built with Boros. My best deck so far, but as of now is badly outdated. I got out of the game since it is nothing but a money pit.

For my starting tips, I'm saying stick to white, green, and red. They seem to be the simplest of colors and have easier tactics. Big monsters, a lot of monsters, and deal damage. Black and blue can get a little complicated at times and tend to require more complex strategies and better deck-building.

I started between the 2013-Ravnica block. Bad time to get started since Mirrodin and Innistrad was still in effect. I fucking despise both of those sets.

I'm just getting back in to Magic after a stupidly long hiatus from playing all the time in high school.

I typically play combos, usually red and black, and at the moment I'm building a white and black deck. I might add red in there later, but I'm not really sure yet.

The only tip I can really give you is to pick a strategy that you want to go with and build from there. Depending on the type of game you want to lay out there are cards in each color set that are perfect for that. Want a long game that will slowly screw the other player over? Go for white. Want a fast game? For for red. Want to piss a lot of people off in a 4v4 game? Green all the way.

I normally go after the other player's deck and their hand, so I go with black. One thing to keep in mind is how cards play off of each other and to keep things balanced. By that I mean don't rely completely on one card, but to have a few cards that will be back-ups to back-ups. Be a little flexible in your deck when things go tits up. Also, make sure you have a few cards that have reach just in case someone has a card that has flying. If not, life will suck.

Playing Magic 2013/2014 is pretty good way in getting a handle on how to play. The really long tutorial does look like a massive pain in the ass, but it does a really good job in teaching basics.

I know there are a few guides out in the wild that are pretty good in explaining strategies and deck building because Magic is complicated as fuck, yo. :p

Used to play a lot now I just dabble but really havent been into it properly in a long while. I started with 4th Edition and Ice age which was a great time. I wish I started earlier as the whole game had a mystery and feel about it that was lost as soon as Weatherlight and Tempest came along.

Traditionally I played Black but really I played every colour I enjoyed making decks as much as playing them and had some pretty successful ones. My favourite were crazy combo decks some were viable most were not but they were great fun to make and play with. I stopped playing a lot around about 6th edition and havent really played much since 8th. Kinda lost interest when people around me stopped and I had no one to play against.

Best tip is have fun and try out new stuff some things will work others wont you can really have a lot of fun with card interaction in Magic. I had/have notebooks of decks I have made somewhere quite literally 100s if not 1000s of decks a lot I never even played I just used to enjoy making decks for myself and others to play.

I actually quit collecting and mostly quit playing back around the release of 5th edition. Long time ago, I know... but my most serious deck, the one I actually played to win and was good at it with, was a black and blue combo. I called it my bruise deck, but it specialized in making you discard, damaging you for discarding (occasionally worse, unpreventable "lose life" effects for discarding), and countering spells which could counteract my discard/damage effects.

...but I tended to have more fun fucking around with green combos, not playing to win.

my biggest love would be blue decks (sometimes with a splash of another color), but i love to tinker with decks of all colors/combinations.

i have a fun blue mill deck now that basically at it's weakest lets me mill my opponent 2 cards for every blue mana i can tap and at it's worst gets to mill my opponent 8 cards for every blue mana i can tap.

basically it works around 2 cards:
- Sage's Row Denizen, which mills my opponent for 2 cards whenever i summon a new blue creature.
- Faerie Imposter, whenever it enters the battlefield i have to return another creature to my hand.

Faerie Imposter only costs 1 blue mana to summon and when i already have one on the field it just lets me bounce them back and forth between my hand and field to mill my opponent like crazy and that adds up quick.

i also have a ton of other spells in there that mill my opponent, it's stupid and silly but so much fun for me to play.

i also have a Black rat deck that's all about making my opponent discard his cards and generating a ton of rats to make my pack rats super powerful, it also has 2 ogre slumlords that give me rat tokens for every non-token creature that dies regardless of whether it's mine or my enemies creature that dies.

I used to play Magic back when the Mirrodin block just started. I got a red/black premade deck that focused a lot on artifacts. Even though I've had a lot of other decks, I still play that one cause it's just so much fun. It was really cheap to put together (after all, it's a premade, with only a few extra cards).

The most fun thing I keep finding is that every now and then I play a game against someone who's really into buying single cards and build supposedly crazy powerful decks. And then I come stomping in with my premade, eat all my artifacts, and watch my opponent cry as I wipe the floor with his very expensive cards. That just never gets old.
Oh Sacrifical Bam.
Mirrodin was so good.
Did you get into the Scars of Mirrodin cycle at all?
My best deck is a White/Artifact deck.
Your poll lacks an option for Artifact focused decks.

I started smack dab in the middle of Born of the Gods, so I'm a certified noobie, but I think I'm getting the hang of things.

I love playing white, usually with some other color added in as support, or as a hybrid system. I've got a White Red Boros aggro deck, and a White Greed enchantment/life gain deck. Both work pretty well.

As an EDH/Commander player I, so far, have only made multi-colour decks. A red/black/green Kresh the Bloodbraided deck that's basically "give Kresh evasion, let him get +40/+40 from random creatures dying/sacrificing them myself and let him trample your face" and a blue/green/white Rubinia Soulsinger deck that has random control shenanigans and some big beasties just in case. I'm also making a white/red Iroas, God of Victory deck that's basically a token deck. Maybe I'll make a mono-black deck sometime later this year, when there's money.

I've only been playing for three/four months and it's really a ton of fun. A little expensive, and lord EDH is overwhelming to start Magic with (if one of the cheaper formats) but it was totally worth it. I'm pretty lethal with my Kresh deck, and my Iroas deck is shaping up really nicely.

Played back in high school.

Back when 7-8th edition was current.

I made decks in many colours, but my heart was always blue.

"I burn you for 4 plus..."
"Redirected. Your warlord is dead. "

"Oh. Okay, I put out a..."
"Counter spell."

"Oh fuck you. I attack with..."
"Tapped."

Stopped playing and gave away all my cards when the group I played with drifted apart. Probably just as well, on reflection I don't care for their business model or the rather luck-based ruleset.

I've been playing Magic off and on for a long time, but in more recent years, I've started playing more competitively and getting more involved with the game. I even passed my L1 Judges exam over the weekend.

As for colors, I don't quite play by strict color identity any more. I'm mostly playing whatever deck is currently good in the format, yes I'm that kind of player, and that has cards that I can pull together. I'm playing Jund midrange and UW control in Standard. UWR flash and GW Bogles in Modern. And mono-red Burn and UR Burn in Legacy. So I play WUBRG, though perhaps a bit less Black than any other color.

My favorite color in magic is probably... sideways. It pretty much doesn't really matter to me, as long as pain connects with my opponent's face. Frequently. I guess my favorite sideways color is blue, 'cause it's usually not the go-to color for smashing. Next up would be colorless, since robots do a really good job of smashing, too. After that... green? Well, green and something else, but green is usually a requirement.

I'm also rather fond of stupid combos, especially the ones that take forever (elf combo, [mtg_card=Time Sieve] combo...), and the ones that win on turn one (Oops! All Spells is a really dumb deck). Sometimes I like control, but only if it includes a reasonable degree of stomping (Bant Flash last standard) or comboing (if you want your friends to hate you forever, ask me about Cascabalance/Cascaderate/cascade into Counterbalance.dec).

I've been playing this game for a little while--off and on since Onslaught block (I guess Starter set, if you want to be specific, but are we counting the silly Starter set?), and varying degrees of competitive since somewhere around Lorwyn.

I started playing Magic before 8th Edition, stopped shortly after Fifth Dawn, and then restared after the release of Rise of the Eldrazi. My two best/favourite decks are my five-colour Cascade deck, which works quite well most of the time despite being all five colours (I used Door to Nothingness successfully once. That was a fun time), and my green Eldrazi deck.

Oh, and Quicksilver Amulet being reprinted in M12 was one of the best things for everyone who uses Eldrazi. Who doesn't love dropping an 11/11 with Annihilator 2 onto the field for only 4 mana?
