Flip a coin.

Oh and you can save Wrex, easiest way is to be pretty much maxed out in either paragon or renegade when it comes to the crunch.

Normally I would spend more time explaining to the less... er... correct of the people in this thread about how Ashley is neither racist, nor religiously fundamental, nor in any classic sense of the word 'a *****'.
But unfortunatley I'm about to head out to dinner with my family and don't have time to argue with people about this so I must resist.

But for the record I will just say this:

I don't care what the haters think!

ASHLEY IS AWESOME

Anyway:
In personal history, I always saved Ashley. She's a tough, no nonsense kind of gal with a great sense of humor, sense of honor and great body. She's defininetly my choice of love interest over all the others. Frankly Liara made me want to kill myself at points, so Ashley was the choice.
Most certainly looking forward to seeing her return in 3.
But really OP it's you choice. Pick which one you like more and stand by your choice. I liked Kaidan but I liked Ashley more, so I made my choice.
Feel free to pick whichever feels right to you. Make a choice and stand by it.

I for one, stand by mine:

Saving Wrex - Max Paragon or Renegade'll do it, but if you've already done his personal mission by talking to him lots earlier he lives

I hate Ahsley's guts (I abhor her spouting Tennyson at me, as well as her ill-conceived habit of calling me "skipper", among other things), and love Kaidan to bits, but then again, I'm willing to admit I'm biased (shameless Kaidan fangirl). Then again, from a roleplaying point of view, you might want to help Liara get rid of the competition (*evil grin*). Also, I disagree about Kaidan being useless in a fight. Honestly, he may not have the HPs of a soldier, but his biotics and engie skills came be damn useful, especially if you're a soldier. I usually go with balanced teams, with a bit of everything (biotics, tech and combat), I find it lets deal easily with most situation. Sometimes brute strength isn't the answer.

Also, you can save Wrex if you've maxed out either your Renegade or Paragon points, you can use your Charm or Intimidate skills to get him to rejoin your squad.
Quoteth the Mass Effect wiki [http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Urdnot_Wrex]:
On Virmire, when Wrex finds out that Shepard is trying to destroy a cure for the genophage, he threatens to kill the Commander, stressing that he can cure his people. He is either shot by Shepard, if you choose the Renegade option, or by Ashley (either on Shepard's orders or her own initiative). Alternatively, if your Charm or Intimidate skill is high enough, or if you helped Wrex to recover his family armor, or if you did not recruit Garrus, he can be persuaded enough to reaffirm his hatred for Saren and rejoin the squad.

You know the Virmire mission near the end of the first Mass Effect where you have to choose whether to save Kaidan and let Ashley die, or vice-versa? This is my second time playing through, since I lost my first save file, and I'm in a bit of a conundrum over who to save.
Kaidan is totally useless in a fight (I'm a Soldier class) but he's a cool guy.
Ashley, on the other hand, is much better in a fight, but a total *****. I don't like her at all.
Some background info that may or may not help--I've played ME2. I'm hooking up with Liara in ME1. I don't really command my squad to do anything during a fight. I let them handle themselves while I kick ass, take names, and chew gum. Too bad gum isn't included in standard Alliance rations.

EDIT: Ah, one more thing--is there a way to save Wrex from his untimely demise?
If you have no real romantic interest in them than I say rescue Kaidan. Ashley is cool but I prefer Kaidan as a character over Ashley. I wonder if in Mass Effect 3 if either one of their deaths in Mass Effect 1 will have any consequences.

I thought Killing Wrex was mainly just a choice you could take and that even if you don't have high enough paragon or renegade points that you can still get him to back down.

Incidentally, so does Kaidan. When you romance him, he mentions he was some family in the agricultural business back on Earth, up near Vancouver IIRC. (Sorry, memory's fuzzy, haven't romanced him or played ME1 in a while)

As a Soldier Shepard, I personally wouldn't use Kaidan or Ashley on the team. I always take a pair that can perfectly balance the Biotics, Tech and Combat bars in the party selection menu. For example, as a Soldier Shepard I would take Liara and Tali. In my Infiltrator run (FemShep, Paragon, romanced Kaidan) I used Garrus and Liara, and for my Adept (male, Renegade, romanced Ashley) I took Ash and Tali.

It all really depends on who you want to see resurface in ME3. On my first two plays through ME1 I was romancing both of them, so I simply killed the one that Shepard wasn't romancing. The third time around, I'm romancing Liara, but I will probably bump off Kaidan just to see more of Ash in the third game.

Actually, this thread's gotten me thinking about that... Now I don't know which one to kill. When I start playing Mass Effect again, of course. Too much Portal 2. =D

Get a high Charm or Intimidate level. Seriously, like really high. Max one of them out. How high you can make then depends on your Paragon or Renegade score.

Neither one will make a difference to whether Wrex survives as long as you use them - I don't know if which one you use will have an impact on ME3 - but if you have a high enough level of either one, and you've completed Wrex's Family Armour, you'll get to keep the krogan around.

I usually save Ashley because she and Garrus are my standard squad. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter.

As for Wrex, you can save him in one of two ways. First, max out your persuade/intimidate skills before starting the conversation. That will make it stupid easy and you only need one dialogue wheel thing. Second, do Wrex's quest for some family armor crap. If you do it, it opens some dialog options during that conversation and will allow you to convince him to join you without the persuade skills.

Oh.

I never heard his romance dialogue since I never went there. Always ended up with Miss Blue.

Huh. Now I'm going to feel guilty the next time I play ME1.

I always rescue Ashley because I never cared much for Kaidan in the first place, and I prefer to take Ashley as my girlfriend over Liara. While the idea of a race of bi alien women is kinda hot, I still prefer Ashley over Liara. Though thank you ME2 for letting me fuck Tali!

Both end up being self-righteous head-up-their-arse'd Alliance drones by the Second, so it matters little in the long haul (honestly, I couldn't care if they make a return in 3 or not).

Anyways, I picked Ashely because I was, at the time, romancing her just to go against the OMG BLUE ALIEN SEX bandwagon.
If you chat up your squadmates and get their full backstories, I thought she was somewhat the more sympathetic character, since she has a family after all (she looks out for her lil sis) and her xenophobic tendencies aren't totally unfounded (there's history).

Besides, I picked her to lead the Salarian strike team, so in terms of lives saved, she came out on top.

Talk to him after every mission and try to make him talk about his family. Eventually you'll get the character quest to find his family armour. That should put you over the top.

OT: You're the guy who plays Shepard, so what would Shepard do? Is it more important to protect the bomb or would Shepard risk it to save whoever is in the Tower?

Though neither one was a really important part of my team in ME1, I saved Kaidan simply because I thought the mission demanded it. I'm usually the type to always save and be extra nice to female members of my merry band in RPGs... but the way the choice was written, it seemed that saving Kaiden was the right thing to do. Ashley was bringing up the rear, but Kaiden was given the duty of arming the bomb, necessary to blow Saren's facility to hell. Him asking for help seemed more important as a Spectre and Commander of the Normandy, to ensure the mission was completed successfully. In addition, Ash's backstory made me think that a heroic death was just what she was really seeking to regain her family honor.

Playing through ME2 now, I'm not sure I made the right decision. I think that most people saved Ashley and as such, so I'm thinking that most of the development in ME3 will be with her character (Look at her makeover!). She wasn't a romance option for me (I chose Liara), but she may be a more important character in ME3 regardless, due to her inflammatory beliefs. Though, they could do something cool with Kaiden kinda like Jack (and Adept Shepard), outfitting him with L5x biotic implants.

Others have already caught the part about Wrex. Save the Krogan, you see him again in ME2! Make sure you do his Family Armor quest, get your Charm or Intimidate up, and only use Red/Blue responses, to get his head on straight.
