I always save Ashley, even if she is racist against aliens.

I really didn't liked the personallity of Kaiden in general.

If only we could have killed both...

Anyway I say choose Kaidan. He is the more realistic character and he isn't as hostile to aliens and when ME3 rolls around he isn't as much of a dick to Shepherd. Ashley goes from a slight ***** to an uber **** by 3.

Specieist Xenophobe or morose Carth Onasi 2.0? That's a tough one. They're both pretty bland characters, eclipsed only by the black hole of a personality that is Jacob.
WHOOOAAAHH, easy there buddy. Throwing around comments about Jacob's african american hole. Settle down.

I say save ash if you either like her better or really hate her. There's a renegade choice in mass effect 3 that can rectify it. Also if you're not into blue chicks...

I say Ashley but only because a completely unrelated event in Mass Effect 3 fails to trigger if you saved Kaiden.

Kaiden Deffinetly When you play as a biotic character and really get into conversations with him he connected with my Shepard in a way only Garrus could come close to. Though they ruined the character in ME 2 and 3

Kill Ashley. Every time.

It's not even a matter of wanting to have Kaiden live as he's boring not all that useful, it's just good to be rid of the xenophobic, religious, tryhard *****.

Not a fan of Ashley.

At all.

Unless you plan to pursue intimate relationship with Ashley, save Kaidan. You will have enough Soldiers in future games.

I've saved both (depending on who's being romanced and whatnot), but im partial to kaiden because he's just so... nice. maybe not the best power in the war against the reapers, but still nice to have on your side. I also think its refreshing for the nice, kinda sappy one to be a dude for once (instead of a girl. seriously).

I also never understood how people take moral stands on Ashley, yet I never hear anything about Wrex. He's a gun-for-hire that shows little care for the deaths of innocents, yet no moral outrage over that.
Wrex hates, kills, maims and destroys everyone equally, that's why!
I think you may be joking, but I think there is more truth to this than people would think. They'd rather be allied with a murderer than a racist because the murder is fantastical and out there while the racism hits too close to reality.

Another theory I have is that Ashley and Kaiden are archetypal switches, Ashley being more masculine and Kaiden being more feminine(or at least what masculine and feminine entails in games), and that leads them to being considered a ***** and boring respectively.

Are you talking about the drinking scene or something else? I saved Kaiden and I'm curious what unrelated event you're talking about.

im assuming everyone here has played the mass effect series but just in case, this has minor spoilers.

ive played through mass effect three times (twice to reach level cap and once because i lost all my save data). each time i saved ashley because her weapon skills seemed more useful and i found her more likeable. after finishing the subsequent two games and dealing with ashley, i really wish id let her die. she was my closest companion by the end of mass effect 1 and then after that, shes just a giant asshole to me for the rest of the series. i took her on every mission with me in the third game, talked to her a lot, was always nice to her. i thought by the end of the game maybe she would finally start acting like a respectful human being. NOPE! total prick right to the end. then after my death she has the audacity to act all sad. shut the fuck up, ashley, we both know you dont give a shit that im dead.

i dont know how it changes if you choose to save kaiden, maybe whoever you dont send to die is just destined to become a jagoff

Save the speciest, bland woman or the boring, blander man?

I personally go with Kaidan more often, simply because I like Carth's voice actor, but they're probably the two blandest party members in all the series (With the possible exception of Jacob and Miranda, but those two at least had the whole being part of Cerberus thing going to make things interesting). Their dialogue is pretty much identical in ME 2 & 3, with very few exceptions, so it's not like it matters that much.

Will never understand people calling Ashely racist. She never once does anything of the kind. She's uneasy a bit about aliens from only interacting with them in more millitary settings, but never displays anything out right racist.

When ACTUAL racists show up she calls them on their crap.

There was a bug where Ken and Gabby would just stand in the engineering bay and their banter dialog would not trigger unless you were friends with Ashley. Though looking this up for this post it appears that it was fixed if you have the Extended Cut DLC.

Now that I think about it, I do remember it odd that I didn't get much conversation out of those two. This would explain a lot. I guess I have more to look forward to in my current Ashley-saved playthrough.

You should save Ashley for the variety but from a logical perspective I would save Kaiden everytime.

So the big differing factor in my logic is that Ashley is religious. So either God doesn't exist, in which case it doesn't matter which one dies because they'll be dead and have no way of knowing it or regretting or being conscious of the fact they aren't alive. Or there is a chance God exists, in which case Ashley is safe and Kaiden isn't.

When it doubt, it always makes sense to save the non-religious person over the religious one (as terrible as that sounds :p). In that scenario the worst case is your choice didn't matter and the best case is the best case, no matter how slim you might estimate the probabilities of it being. Even as an atheist it makes sense, because if there's even a 1 in a 10^googleplex chance you might be wrong, that's still better odds than it making no difference at all who dies. I guess there would be a couple of exceptions with certain religions that punish believers who haven't done X,Y or Z but I'm pretty sure Ashley is christian.

This is what happens. It's basically plot mandated character assassination, because the story needs them to be angry at you even if there isn't really a reason. Made worse by the fact they were trying to write for too separate characters but also trying to avoid the story branching off significantly depending on that choice
