My cursor was screaming toward the "Hell NO" button until I stopped to think for over a second. While I'm a firm believer that Mass Effect 3 definately has to be the end of the Commander Shepard trilogy; a MMORPG set in the Mass Effect universe could be quite good.
Then again it could suck a lot.

No because turning RPGs into MMORPGS sucks. It doesn't matter how good the narrative is the RPG will be trashed in an MMO environment. An MMO cannot accomplish the same thing that a single player RPG can, you can not be the most badass specter when there are 5 million people that are all the same as you (Old Republic I'm looking at you I want to be the dark lord of all space damn it). Also your decisions can't have as much weight because the world can't change when there other users in it. IE if you kill Wrex he can't be alive in my game in the Krogan town.
They are different genres for a reason.

But then what about the fact that every single class would have ranged attacks? I just don't think it would work.
I'm not sure what you're getting at here. What is so wrong about everyone having ranged attacks? Is there really a need for melee to play a big role?
Besides, look at Krogan. They are tough and armoured, and like to charge into melee range. When there, they hit effing hard. So there can be an oppurtunity for melee.
I just think that there would be huge balance issues if the Tank could target the frail DPS from 200 yards away.

meh...

depends on how they make it.

actually I would prefer a sand box type of ME next time around instead of a movie like mission.

The only Backing I'd ever give a project like this would be for 2 Reasons.
A. There haven't been a SciFi MMO worth 3 farts since Anarchy online
B. I hate the monotanous dragged out shit that Wow keeps takeing, and even more hate the fact there isn't anything BETTER out there.

Yeah, it would be cool. But I think I'm just going to buy The Old Republic. I kinda like Star Wars better than Mass Effect.

Its an interesting thought, and it might just work out well, but I doubt it will survive with other MMO's like WoW and Guild Wars on the market

No, they havent even finished dumbing the game down into a shitty, bogstandard TPS yet and people are suggesting MMO?

Lets wait and see what happens with ME3. If they add in competative multiplayer and complete the cycle of dumbing down into a Gears clone fully, then we can discuss shitting on the corpse of Mass Effects single player RPG side even further via an MMO.

In order for a ME MMO to be successful, I think they would need to create space and ground combat. Both space and ground would need to be explorable. Despite wanting an ME MMO, I think that the ME universe is too big for an MMO game. However, if they decided to do it:

For ground combat, I think that cover and shooting could work in a multiplayer setting as long as the battlefield were big enough to maneuver. I have no idea how space combat exploration would work other than an MMO game needs it. I forget but wasn't the ME galaxy explored to only 3% or something? That's 97% to play with.

Gameplay wise, the problem would be balancing. I don't think it would be good to follow a class system. Instead, cost of items and a hidden skill system would be the way to progress. I'm thinking that there would be background starting situations. An example is "Rich Boy" and "Soldier".

"Rich boy" could get a boost in starting currency and maybe some sort of trust fund that supplied credits every 10 hours or so you are logged in. You could deposit money into the trust fund for better returns, or take some out for quick cash. However, you would absolutely suck at skill progression. You would have to rely on buying the best items possible.

The "Soldier" would be great at skill progression in a very limited field i.e. combat skills. Barter, hacking, etc would all suck.

Of course these are just examples, but I believe it would add a believable element to the ME universe instead of classes. This way story and progression could be combined to deliver a good gameplay mechanic.

I have other ideas as to how a ME MMO could work, but this post is getting rather long. I'll leave it here and maybe post some of my other ideas at a later date. Also, I have no idea that this would work if it was made.

Having everyone be a Spectre is damn retarded. Not only would it limit the available playable races, but you run into the Playable Jedi dilemma: When Everyone Is A Rare Super Badass, No One Is.

Spectres are supposed to be the Elite. The BEST OF THE BEST, Shaft in a space suit. Over the course of the past two games, Shepard has encountered THREE other Spectres; one dies and two were villains. They're agents, not an army -one never gets the impression that there's ten billion of them running around in the galaxy.

Have them be a Prestige Class. If you've got a military background and massive reputation with the Citadel, allow the player to undergo a series of dangerous missions mid- to late-game and EARN Spectre status.
Yeah if you had to actually EARN the spectre status than I would be ok with it.
SW galaxies before the "rape the community patch" took a perfect approach to this with jedis. If players wanted to be a jedi (and not all of them wanted to) they had to spend HUNDREDS OF HOURS doing difficult stuff to EARN that status. Once they reached it they were perfectly prepared for what was ahead of them. Bah I was trying to be jedi but after I spent 120 hours in the game (which isn't even a half-way-done mark) the patch came and ruined everything (you could be any class in the game from the character crator).

I was literally crushed. Not only because my 120 hours went to shit, but also because the game was no longer original. This day was followed by a massive exodus of pissed off players. New ones never came.

Still... ME mmo is a big no no for me. I hate it when great story based games turn into mmo's and I still can't get over the fact that such thing happened to KOTOR.

I think a Mass Effect MMO would have to really depend on how successfully Star Wars: The Old Republic does. In my opinion I don't believe there needs to be a Mass Effect MMO. The Mass Effect series has always been a single player experience. The series has always been about how our actions help shape the galaxy. I have no idea how Bioware would incorporate that ability into an MMO.

I am all for a great Sci-Fi MMO, that niche in the market is pretty lacking right now (EvE doesn't count in my mind as it's mostly flying a ship around and gathering resources :x).

That said, Mass Effect needs to end with ME3. It's been an incredible story thus far, and while the Universe is really solid for an MMO SWTOR is coming out of the same developer and wouldn't really make sense from a development standpoint.

So, here's to hoping that SWTOR is epic.

No, and I quite frankly want a bittersweet ending, where Galactic Civilisation sacrifices itself to destroy the Reapers. I do not want the series to continue past 3.

Honestly, where an MMO is set no longer bothers me, I'm not invested in any particular universe. I just want to see an MMO launch where the game works and has plenty of content and PVP/PVE servers for the players to choose from (and reasonable enforcement of rules, just to stop the game becoming a cesspit like WOW turned in to).

If an MMO can give those things, I want to play. Otherwise, forget about it - seen the "name" used to sell the game far too much. Gameplay before nostalgia or maps/models/artwork etc.

I just think that there would be huge balance issues if the Tank could target the frail DPS from 200 yards away.
Who says you need a tank?

And even if you did, there are ways around that. Make it so the more advanced shielding systems interfere with the targeting systems in some weapons. Stick them with handheld shields like what the Shadow Broker had, give them CQC loadouts (i.e. pistol and knife), give them shotguns and stun batons and tazers. Stuff that really only works well up close and personal.
