Alright I'll explain why 27 is the cutoff number. It may or may not make sense. My cousin is 27 he knew his, and I didn't know mine I'm 21 btw. So we decided 27 would be the cutoff. It looks like I'm in the minority here.

I'm 25. I've known mine since I was about 18. It has come up quite a bit in my life - jobs, school, voter registration, insurance, etc...

No, I don't know it off hand, and It's a little embarrassing that I don't to be honest. It's just that I don't actually use it for almost anything in my day to day life so I just haven't had any real reason to try to memorize it.

Yes, very easily. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for everyone else I know.

Yep. Have to use it a lot for college stuff, so I just kind of memorized because of how many times I have to repeat putting it on forms n' crap. :p

I think the equivalent in the UK is the NI (National Insurance) number. We get a plastic card with it on (which I keep in my wallet).

I don't know it off by heart largely because the only times I need it are when starting a new job or changing my GP. I think I've had to write it down less than eight times in my life!

Interesting fact for fellow Brits: The mapping between NI numbers and people isn't one-to-one or even one-to-many. It's many-to-many. There are NI numbers that are assigned to multiple people, and some people have multiple NI numbers assigned to them. The combination of NI number and full name is supposedly unique, but there's no system in place to ensure that. If I were to find someone else with the same NI number as me and change my name to match theirs, we would be indistinguishable to the government (for tax purposes anyway).

I know my card's number. It's not a difficult thing to remember, especially when you start looking for a job. Also, it's much safer to remember it than to carry it around and possibly lose it.

Sooo...this is a US thing, right? I'm from Sweden and obviously know my personal number...you kind of have to.

A who what? What's a social security number?

I kinda know my National Insurance number, it's 9 characters/integers long.

If a "social security number" is what I think it is, then yeah, I've pretty much known it since 12 (maybe even earlier). You pretty much have to. But you really could have explained what a "social security number" is first.

Of course... I've heard it's a pretty new thing in USA, but not in Sweden.
Here we use it all the time.

If it's similar to the South African ID number then yes I do know it. I memorised it when I was 18. First bit is easy it is your birthday. :p

I'm 24 and I know mine. Granted I didn't really learn about it until I was 17 or 18 so I don't know if that counts. Unless you're going for a part time job at 15 or 16 you don't really need to know it anyway from what I understand. At this point though my number is just useless information since you don't need to use it often unless you just can't hold a job or are trying to go to every school ever.

Personally I don't, and I would think that most people over 27 don't know theirs either. No need to remember it anyway, since it's on your ID and by law you must always carry some form of identification with you.

The essential 4-digit part at the end, since I never forgot my birth date. 19 at the moment, and I'll probably see that a lot when re-applying for university.

In the UK we don't have Social Security, but we have something similar, called National Insurance. And yes, I do know my National Insurance number by heart. I only use it for job applications, but I figured I may as well remember it since it's easier than looking it up and getting my wallet out every time I try to apply for a job :p

I'm 22, by the way.
