I find it interesting how centuries of warfare tradition comes through in each regions mecha designs. the european mechas are big, clunky with lots of guns, japanese are more sleek and agile, often relying on speed and close quarters combat. compare that to how europeans had the broadsword and calvary in super heavy armor, battles were often fought in open grass land with strength vs strength. The japanese had the samurai with the katana, a much faster and sleek sword, battles were often fought in mountainous, heavily forested areas.

i prefer the japanese mechas, there is an elegance about them, much like the difference between the ancient europeans fighting method of brute strength vs the japanese speed and skill
Oddly most battles if not all were fought with spears not the katanas. Swords were eexpensive to make because the metal was of pour quality and few sources. While iron was readily available in europe. So no, japanese waged war mostly like europe they just didnt have the material to make many iron weapons and why the katana was popular. The katana became romanticised along with the samurai.

O/t: I like gundam wing but otherwise dont care for mechs like i used to.

Well, as much as I like certain mecha, such as the Knightmare Frames from Code Geass, Evas from NGE (I rather like Provisional Unit 5, which you could say is the closest to being a "true mecha" out of all the Evas, and of course the good ol' Battletech and 40k mechs, I'm going to bring something fresh and unmentioned into this thread.

I've never seen Patlabor, or any of the mechs from that series, mentioned on this site, which is a shame. Even if Patlabor 2: The Movie was a bit of a draining watch...
Oh, and bonus mecha which I also rather like from Patlabor 2:

Yes, this one is literally a tank with legs.
Well, more of an APC with legs, but oh well.
Oh, and for those of you who may be interested, here is a site with a whole list of Labors and assorted specs/pics for them > http://www.patlabor.info/labors.htm
Oh, these mechs are called "Labors", if you hadn't guessed.

Interesting mech. Reminds me of one I'd seen in an art booklet on robot designs.

American.

Really. Megas is THAT awesome.
While I would be foolish to question the awesomeness of Megas XLR and while I really REALLY hate to be THAT GUY....

Megas is closer to the Japanese mecha.

Now this is an interesting design. I was looking through Forgeworld for some more titans to show, and I found this new Dreadnought Model, the Contemptor

Gotta say, looks pretty neat and old school compared to the regular Dread.

I think the best would be a mix between American and Japanese designs. I love how practical the NA style looks... add a bit of the Japanese stylized flair and you've got a winner.
You know, I was trying really hard to pick between American and Japanese, but I think this guy is right. Mixing Japanese and American DID result in the best mech ever being created:

Probably Japanese. Gotta love Gundam. But I also like American ones a lot.

What is that purple mech from? I bought a model of it at hastings because of its distinguishable badassness.
This has probably already been answered, but that is from Evangelion. Which is a pretty good anime.
