Harder than Marche Au Supplice on hard mode from AC4? because that mission kicked my arse for several weeks.
Unfortunately I never got the chance to play AC4, only AC4A. After watching a youtube video of that particular mission, it might be on the same level of AC4A last 'hidden' mission if you don't use a certain glitch/trick whereby where you can bait only one enemy to go after you rather than all 3 on normal, or 4 on hard.

I like all mecha but my preference goes for "super robots" (Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Steel Jeeg, Gunbuster, Gao Gai Gar, Gurren Lagann, etc.) so I guess Japanese?

I also should mention the Star Wars Mechs. Downright iconic.

Impractical? Check. Awesome? Check. Scary as hell when they are coming right at you and won't die? Check.

I prefer Warmonger class titans. Japanese mecha are too dancy for me, these lumbering engines of death and destruction are where it's at.

Is the Warmonger the Chaos variant of a Warlord? Or is it an alternate variant like a shadowsword to a Baneblade?

I prefer Scott Westerfield's version of mechs.
safe to say i just won the thread.
You have excellent taste. I'm a fan of utilitarian "walking tank" designs that attempt to propose a strategic niche for legged vehicles despite their inherent flaws. The art, by the way, is by Keith Thompson: http://www.keiththompsonart.com/gallery.html

I dunno, its profile is way more similar to the Warlord chassis. The Imperators carry cathedrals on their backs.

That revenant in the picture is going to be crushed by the Warmonger's foot.

that mission was a *****, flat out and simple.

had to sit outside the place and lure them out one by one so i could slash em to death.

I'm going to have to say MechWarrior is my favorite. Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries had some great designs. Yeah, they're big, clunky things, but they have a degree of believability and the heavy artillery a vehicle of their size would carry.

The Japanese had it good with Macross/Robotech, but these days their Mecha are just roller-skating Power Rangers with Godzilla-envy. Seriously, how credible is a mech armed with a knife?

Mostly the japanese designs. Gundam has some nice hidden gems if you look for the MSV or other designs that were nowhere near being animated or made into toys.
I guess i'm just attracted to the obvious humanoid influences in the designs.

Just some of my 5 favorite japanese designs:

I find it interesting how centuries of warfare tradition comes through in each regions mecha designs. the european mechas are big, clunky with lots of guns, japanese are more sleek and agile, often relying on speed and close quarters combat. compare that to how europeans had the broadsword and calvary in super heavy armor, battles were often fought in open grass land with strength vs strength. The japanese had the samurai with the katana, a much faster and sleek sword, battles were often fought in mountainous, heavily forested areas.

i prefer the japanese mechas, there is an elegance about them, much like the difference between the ancient europeans fighting method of brute strength vs the japanese speed and skill
you kinda seem to not know what you are talking about, the samurai were heavy armored (with textiles and wood) for the standards of the japaneese culture, the thing is, iron was extremly rare in japan, they even had to invent a special forging technique to purify the iron used for swords and lances (katana is the japaneese term for sword while naginata is the term for lance). also, to claim that european swordplay is just brute force is kinda insulting to people like me who actually learn the various european fencing techniques, if anything, in a direct conflict between a knight with only a broadsword and a samurai with a katana the knight would nine out of ten times have won, simply because the japaneese style relied to much on this honorfull, ritualistic type of combat while a knight knew that every second, every blow counts, and if you loose you could not expect any mercy from your enemy.

OT:
i think you dug yourself a hole there, since 40k kinda covers all styles.
you provided us with images of the imperial titans, but you kind of forgot the smaller dreadnoughts:

and the sentinels of the imperial guard:

and the more japaneese-looking eldar wraithlord

as well as the eldar warwalkers

and last but not least the in-between style of the tau battlesuits

i kinda have to go with the answer "western style machas", i love 40k, but i also think the battletech mechas are awesome, and i really liked the mechas in c&c tiberian sun and tiberian wars.

I know that mentioning "realism" when talking about mecha is a bit silly, but I prefer the more realistic mechs of the Battletech/Mechwarrior universe, so I guess I'd lean towards American (YES I know all about the Macross controversy, but I consider Battletech American now as there have been hundreds of mech designs that far outweigh the original few that were based on Macross).

None of them. Do you know how inefficient mechas really are? Save some trouble and invest in augmentations instead.

Well, if I really had to choose, then it would not be the Neon Genesis Evangelion ones. If the mecha gets hurt at any point in the battle, you literally feel its pain. So imagine getting the mecha stabbed in the eye; horribly inefficient.
