Now this is a game that's been out for quite a while, and largely forgotten, but I was checking reviews on it recently and noticed that for the most part people have the exact opposite opinion on it than I do. While most of the reviews call it the best installment in the series, I consider it the worst, by a pretty large margin. To give some perspective, I absolutely loved the first two Metroid Primes, one or both of them would definitely hold a position in my top 5 games. I'v replayed them both at least twice. The third one however, I actually found to be an ordeal to play through once. If it wasn't for the two games before it I doubt I would have finished the game.
There's a couple reasons that I can think of which ruined the last game for me:
1. Ability to leave the planet/Isolation - This may seem like a really minor aspect, and on top of that a positive one, but it may have had the largest effect on me enjoying the game. With the first two Metroid Primes you spent your entire time on one planet, for the most part alone. It gave you a feeling of tension, and self reliance. Your success/failure depended entirely on your actions, no one could come in and rescue you. In Corruption you're just able to come and go from planets as freely as you'd like. You can talk to people, they help you out, and you're overall a much smaller part of what's happening. You feel less in control, or in danger.
2. Difficulty - I found Corruption to be really easy. Once you had gotten used to the aiming with the Wii remote it became a walk in the park. It wasn't just the combat, the puzzles were less challenging as well. The biggest aspect of the challenge was getting the controls to do what you wanted them to do. This was especially disappointing after Echoes which was a very challenging game. In my opinion, a series like this should have an escalating difficulty, that way each game you require just a little bit more skill to get through, and you can still feel tested.
3. Aesthetics - Yet another seemingly minor issue, but it bothered me. I preferred both of the previous game's visuals. The visuals in this game seemed a lot more flashy and gimmicky. I think that Samus' difference in suits emodies my issue with it.
One is sleek and stylized whereas the other... feels almost like a later gen Pokemon. This is just my opinion of course, and I realize that other people might actually prefer the aesthetics change.
4. The Ending - Felt so goddamn unsatisfying and anticlimactic. The final boss was kind of bland, uninteresting and I beat him in ONE try. I know that's a silly reason to be bothered by it, but for a boss to end an entire series like this I want to struggle and get beaten down over and over again (See first two game's final bosses)
So yeah, that's the best I can describe my problem with Corruption. I'm curious about what the Escapist thought of it. Did you like it/dislike it? Do you agree or disagree with any of my issues?
(Poll attempted, crossing my fingers for it to work)
