Now this is a game that's been out for quite a while, and largely forgotten, but I was checking reviews on it recently and noticed that for the most part people have the exact opposite opinion on it than I do. While most of the reviews call it the best installment in the series, I consider it the worst, by a pretty large margin. To give some perspective, I absolutely loved the first two Metroid Primes, one or both of them would definitely hold a position in my top 5 games. I'v replayed them both at least twice. The third one however, I actually found to be an ordeal to play through once. If it wasn't for the two games before it I doubt I would have finished the game.

There's a couple reasons that I can think of which ruined the last game for me:

1. Ability to leave the planet/Isolation - This may seem like a really minor aspect, and on top of that a positive one, but it may have had the largest effect on me enjoying the game. With the first two Metroid Primes you spent your entire time on one planet, for the most part alone. It gave you a feeling of tension, and self reliance. Your success/failure depended entirely on your actions, no one could come in and rescue you. In Corruption you're just able to come and go from planets as freely as you'd like. You can talk to people, they help you out, and you're overall a much smaller part of what's happening. You feel less in control, or in danger.

2. Difficulty - I found Corruption to be really easy. Once you had gotten used to the aiming with the Wii remote it became a walk in the park. It wasn't just the combat, the puzzles were less challenging as well. The biggest aspect of the challenge was getting the controls to do what you wanted them to do. This was especially disappointing after Echoes which was a very challenging game. In my opinion, a series like this should have an escalating difficulty, that way each game you require just a little bit more skill to get through, and you can still feel tested.

3. Aesthetics - Yet another seemingly minor issue, but it bothered me. I preferred both of the previous game's visuals. The visuals in this game seemed a lot more flashy and gimmicky. I think that Samus' difference in suits emodies my issue with it.

One is sleek and stylized whereas the other... feels almost like a later gen Pokemon. This is just my opinion of course, and I realize that other people might actually prefer the aesthetics change.

4. The Ending - Felt so goddamn unsatisfying and anticlimactic. The final boss was kind of bland, uninteresting and I beat him in ONE try. I know that's a silly reason to be bothered by it, but for a boss to end an entire series like this I want to struggle and get beaten down over and over again (See first two game's final bosses)

So yeah, that's the best I can describe my problem with Corruption. I'm curious about what the Escapist thought of it. Did you like it/dislike it? Do you agree or disagree with any of my issues?

(Poll attempted, crossing my fingers for it to work)

I really enjoyed it, but I agree on three of your four parts. For the first point I'd like to offer that the inclusion of NPCs to talk to, like the other Bounty Hunters and the marine-type soldiers (cannot remember their unit name), was just a sign that this had gotten too big for Samus to contain. No matter how bad ass she is, this situation was beyond her and she needed help.

I felt the third one was weaker then the first two but still competent. ...Nothing else to say really.

I don't even consider Corruptions a Metroid game. Actually, Metroid ended with Metroid Prime as far as I'm concerned.

I'd really like to explain in detail why but it's been a long time since I've played any of them except Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. All I remember is it came to a lot of crap that just didn't need to be there, and the games becoming something else instead of the discovering, beautiful atmosphere, and feeling of being alone in a world full of creeps that hate your guts.

Hey, I loved Metroid Prime 3. Most of the issues you (OP) bring up are perfectly fine, but I like to think of it as them trying something new and for the most part succeeding. I enjoyed being able to travel between different planets since it gave the game world a greater sense of variety and openness.

I agree with you about the ending though. Goddamn, that last level was annoying.

I personally liked it, not my favorite prime game that's echos, but it was pretty ok. I do agree that the difficulty and ending were easy and awful respectively. I personally like the PED suit,it's better than the fusion varia suit, just not as good as say the light suit or Phazon suit.

While the story was nothing stellar,it worked for me because it made you feel like part of something bigger and had her work in a team instead of being constantly saved. She was treated as an equal instead of a like a weird creature that bleeds at odd times and has boobies.Could we have developed the other bounty hunters outside of 1 cut scene and a lore entry, yes but they were cool characters with interesting powers.

I found Corruption to be the most fun of the Prime series and as such the best. It was challenging without being punishing and it actually controls great considering it's a wii motion title.

On a review scale, the original Metroid Prime is by all accounts the best of the series. With a great sense of isolation and exploration when compared to corruption. Metroid Prime is a more rewarding experience to play through. It's also way to hard. I managed to beat the game once, and on revisits could never best the last boss again (the second last boss typically takes me around 10 attempts to beat).

Metroid Prime 2 is the most difficult of the bunch and for me is unbeatable. It forces you to play long segments without save point access and is poorly designed compared to Prime. The game isn't actually bad, it's just not in league with the other entries.

My opinions, in a nutshell...

Prime 1 = best atmosphere and pacing of the three; strong translation of the original Metroid atmosphere and gameplay into 3D; my favorite in the Prime series and second-favorite Metroid game overall

Prime 2 = a shallow re-hash Prime 1; Dark World was PURPLE! and that's all you can really say about it; key-gathering puzzles were annoying and felt like an artificial-lengthening of gameplay; final boss fights (especially against Dark Samus) felt obtusely-difficult and required me looking up GAMEFaqs to beat; overall not a bad game, but by far the weakest of the three

Prime 3 = yes, I agree, the introduction of NPCs/dialogue/smaller environments hurt the atmosphere and story-without-words approach that Metroid does well, but the unique FPS control scheme made it a fun one-of-a-kind experience that I enjoyed a lot and the environments, while small, were well-designed and interesting to look at; better than 2 by a long-shot, but not as good as 1

Absolutely loved that game. After I beat the story, I spent hours looking for hidden objects and areas to get that 100 percent completion rating. In fact, I loved the game so much that when I saw the original Metroid Prime at Gamestop, I had to grab it. I'm liking what I see so far, but the only gripe right now is the controls since the Wii Remote/Nunchuck combo made everything so fluid in the third. But whatever, I'll get used to it.

It seemed to be just as strong as the rest of the series, although I still say that echoes is my favorite of the three, with Corruption being my second. The first metroid came down with a bad case of "where the Hell am I supposed to go" syndrom. I had no idea that I was supposed to be gathering those artifacts, I thought that I was hunting down Ridley. Echoes handled that better, giving you just enough plot to start with and then letting you piece everything together through the lore. Also the Light Suit (in my opinion) looks...silly. I prefered the Dark Suit to be honest, it looked badass.

I say it's the best. Those shooting mechanics are a joy on the Wii. Though I haven't tried the Wii versions of the first two games. Why the hell don't they make more games that work that way? Seriously...I hate first person and loved that game.

I have never beat any of the Metroid Prime games. 1 and 2 I got to the part where you have to backtrack through the entire game world to find things with minimal guidance (I didn't have internet access back than) and I got way too frustrated.

On Corruption though I got maybe 3 hours into it and gave up. It's the part right after you get the grapple arm and have to pull down three radar dishes, all the while space pirates are undoing your work. I was trying for a few hours and couldn't even get one dish to stay in place before getting to the next one. Put it down and never picked it back up.

Though the games were fun until those points, I wasn't getting anywhere in them and since I had to fight through room after room of enemies to backtrack it got very tiresome quickly.

It's my least favorite of the Prime series, which isn't to say I hated it.

Things that bothered me:

Getting bossed around by that stupid Aurora Unit and that annoying Admiral Dane guy, who felt to me like a halfassed attempt to draw in other FPS fans by giving them a military commander dude to listen to. I realize it's not really out of character - being a bounty hunter/mercenary type, it's sort of her job - but I kind of prefer it when they say "Hey Samus, get rid of this threat to the galaxy" and leave the specifics up to her, or when some boondoggle of hers gets her trapped someplace and she has to figure a way out herself.

That stupid "escort quest", where the lighter-armored (by their own admission!) demolition guys run in ahead of the heavily armed and armored bounty huntress in a super suit rather than, say, hanging back and letting her clean out every possible threat. I know you aren't actually punished for letting them get killed, but I was trying to earn one of the gold credits (another thing which bothered me) and it quickly grew tiresome.

On the hardest difficulty, most of the boss fights (particularly the last one) had ridiculous amounts of HP and felt more like battles of attrition than skill.

Prime 1 is my favorite of the three. I feel like it had the best visual design (aside from amazing Light Suit from Echoes) and Samus had more reasonable hair than the crazy anime ponytail thing she's sporting nowadays.

I love all three Prime games, and despite being one of the earliest Wii titles, I still think Corruption is one of the console's finest games to date. But yeah, it just doesn't stack up to the first two. The introduction of a cast of characters and the exciting flashy moments are okay in their own merit, but the ultimately take up space that could be used for more substance and gameplay.
And yes, it is also too easy; remember the 3rd Seed's boss?
You know, everyone's favorite big bad Ridley, this time supposedly souped up with the finest Phazon/Tech upgrades to be found on the Pirate Homeworld?

He was disappointingly fragile compared to, say, his earlier appearance as Meta Ridley in Prime.
Where he did manage to kill me.
Over and over.
But man was it fun to square off against him.

Fast forward to Prime 3, and now he's the Omega Ridley. Depressingly, he seems to have removed his A-game from his repertoire. He can't take much punishment from Samus's Nova or Phazon Beams, can easily be dodged with the freedom the Wii controls provide, and lacks the capacity to lay down serious hurt if you're a halfway decent player.

I almost felt sorry for killing him so easily.

Metroid Prime was awesome: minimal flaws, first of its kind, an all around gem.
Prime 2: Echoes was a bit shaky in copying it's predecessor's stride, but it also tried a whole new direction with the game world(s) and lore and tech. It still had satisfying boss fights, a huge and hostile environment, and a fun (if impractical) weapon arsenal. Against all odds, the game's still a personal favorite of mine.

Compared to what those two have to offer, three can be found a bit lacking. Still fun in its own right, but I'm going to vote (marginally) worse the the other two.

it's my favourite of the Trilogy. as great as the first one is, Corruption adds so much more greatness but also keeps the feel of Prime. Echoes is the weakest of the trilogy but it's still a great game

I loved it.
Defiantly not as good as 1 or 2 but its still up there.
It felt cut, shortened, and after looking up some of the things retro wanted to do in it, it made sense.
Hyper mode killed some of the difficulty and the worlds felt not as fleshed out as in 1 and 2.
I did love the stacking Beam upgrades.

It's my least favourite out of the triliogy (Echoes being my favourite however the first Prime has the best portrayal on Samus Aran apperance since Echo face is so uncanny valley).

Anyway the reasons for being my least favourite is that it was just too easy since that was the only Prime game I had ever finish. Yes I never finish the first two but I appricate how hard it was and it made you look for every single ammos and energy storages you can find while Corruption was more forceful. It was super easy find it since they put it on the map as oppose to let you explore every nook and cranny of the planet in the first two.

Also Corupption was more about quantity over quality as you get to explore several planet but you only scratch the surface to each planet while the first two were far more indept despite being on a single planet.

I enjoyed Corruption the most.

Echoes was sometimes annoying as fuck, stupid Dark World nonsense.
I agree with this . The Dark world stuff was tedious . Not a bad game , but i think the third was better than the second . And on par with the first . It's one of the 5 proper games on the wii .
