I agree on all fronts, but I HATED the light world, dark world mechanic from Echos. It destroyed the core aspect of what Metroid SHOULD be, a game where exploration is a focus. Corruption was weak in a lot of regards, mainly in it being overly linear but, it's still better than no exploration.

It was more linear, but there's a lot less backtracking involved, which is good for the most part.

However the sheer sense of exploration in the first, and the second prime games was somewhat lost. It did one up on the second Prime though for not having the stupid Light world/Dark world gimmick that I somewhat disliked.

They are all great games though.

[small] I also liked Other M too... >.> <.< *runs*[/small]

For me, the prime series is and shall always be:

In third place, Echoes, because of the final fetch quest not being able to be worked on throughout the whole game, causing it to be insanly tedious, everything else in the game was great, except the whole ammo thing, but that was forgivable.
In second place, Corruption, because I can't really think of any major problems with it, but it's just not quite at the level of glory.
And in first place, Prime 1, because it is perfection in my eyes.

It's been a while since I played Corruption, and I must admit I can't recall that much of it... except that I really enjoyed it.

Well, there is the one thing... I really hate how you have to unlock the "hard" difficulty by finishing the game. Since it's uncommon for me to play through a game more than once in this day and age, I'd like to be able to get an appropriate challenge the first time through. Yet they've been doing this with the Metroid series since the franchise returned from its 16-bit grave.

Seems an even distribution of opinions,

except that everyone agrees it was better than the second. Heh.

Granted, still a good game, but it's easy to see why this trend exists.

Anyway, I'm about tied between the 1st and 3rd. I really liked the motion controls for corruption (bite me), the introduction of the other bounty hunters and therefor 3 new sapient alien species for the metroid continuity (ghor possibly being human, but we also have those elysia bots, so it evens out). I also loved the huge variety of environments, the hyper mode powers, and the satisfying series culmination that was brought while simultaneously introducing some unresolved story elements that could conceivably be reintroduced in another game later.

That said, the original also had a much bigger sense of exploration than the 3rd game. However, now that I think about it, I may have liked corruption just a bit more, especially for how well it wrapped up the trilogy with a satisfying ending that seemed significant and plausible without radically shifting the overall metroid narrative.

My worthless opinion:

The first game is the best overall. The atmosphere and the variety was easily superior to its sequels. It was certainly not without flaw, but it was pretty damn decent.

The second was a chore to play, and the less said about it, the better.

The third had the weakest atmosphere of the bunch and left out the feeling of isolation standard to the Metroid experience. None of the NPCs were particularly compelling or well-acted, and the variety and sense of growing more powerful over the course of the game were hobbled severely.

It was, however, mostly pretty fun. As a Metroid game, it wasn't particularly good, but as a shooter, it was alright. More fun than Echoes, that's for goddamn certain.

It's definitely the weakest out of the three, but it's still great. Like a 9 - 8.5 - 8 kind of thing (going Prime - Echoes - Corruption).

Corruption was definitely the worst of the three (Prime being the best ofc), but it was definitely enjoyable and provided a fun conclusion to the trilogy. It didn't manage to quite match the atmosphere of the other two and despite not having bad controls it would have been better with gamecube controller and a similar scheme to the previous games.

So yeah a good game, overshadowed by its' prequel. Still at the rate of decline the prime series was going it would have taken atleast a dozen sequels to be as god-awful as Other:M was

Oh, and for fun, this is how I'd rank the rest of Metroid:

1. Metroid Prime 3
2. Metroid: Zero Mission
3. Super Metroid
4. Metroid Prime
5. Metroid Fusion
6. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
7. Metroid 2
8. ...I don't even consider this one a Metroid game.
Prime 3 above Super Metroid!? Get Out. (That was a joke)

OT: I would say that IMO Prime 3 is the worst of the Prime games by far, mostly because the difficulty was nonexistent even on "hard" mode and the sense of isolation and being stuck on an big scary alien world is lost thanks to the planet hopping and cardboard NPCs. Another reason (and I'm probably in the extreme minority on this one) is that I hated the controls in Prime 3, even if I ignore the pointless gimmicky motion controls and the fact that the Wiimote sometimes gets scared and confused if I move to far or to fast, there was still something about using the lock-on to snap from target to target and having to stop and look around to find things that made the first two games have a distinct feel that is lost with the Wii controls, to the point that I almost never used the lock-on in 3 because it was unnecessary.

I prefer all of the First-Person Metroid games over the sidescrolling ones. I didn't get a chance to finish Corruption though because, ironically enough, my game system got corrupted and is unable to read disks anymore.

Super Metroid's biggest problem is the control scheme. It's unnecessarily fiddly because it adhered so strictly to the established controls from Metroids 1 and 2.

If they re-released Super Metroid for the 3DS, with its control scheme reworked to be more like Fusion and Zero Mission... and with 3D support and updated graphics, I guess... I'd buy it at regular retail price in a heartbeat.

Metroid Prime 1 and 2 are my outright favorite metroid games of all time. (And #5 on my top ten list of games).

The third one is great but it is not perfect, the problem being that it feels a little hard to access.

While I'll always prefer the side-scrolling Metroids above all others, Metroid Prime stands as my favorite of it's FPS series.

I liked it. I got it because it looked like Halo and have not even considered buying another Halo since. It is my standard.

It's my least favorite of the Prime series, which isn't to say I hated it.

Things that bothered me:

Getting bossed around by that stupid Aurora Unit and that annoying Admiral Dane guy, who felt to me like a halfassed attempt to draw in other FPS fans by giving them a military commander dude to listen to. I realize it's not really out of character - being a bounty hunter/mercenary type, it's sort of her job - but I kind of prefer it when they say "Hey Samus, get rid of this threat to the galaxy" and leave the specifics up to her, or when some boondoggle of hers gets her trapped someplace and she has to figure a way out herself.

That stupid "escort quest", where the lighter-armored (by their own admission!) demolition guys run in ahead of the heavily armed and armored bounty huntress in a super suit rather than, say, hanging back and letting her clean out every possible threat. I know you aren't actually punished for letting them get killed, but I was trying to earn one of the gold credits (another thing which bothered me) and it quickly grew tiresome.

On the hardest difficulty, most of the boss fights (particularly the last one) had ridiculous amounts of HP and felt more like battles of attrition than skill.

Prime 1 is my favorite of the three. I feel like it had the best visual design (aside from amazing Light Suit from Echoes) and Samus had more reasonable hair than the crazy anime ponytail thing she's sporting nowadays.
I definitely agree with your first and third points. I didn't like how it became more of a mission objective type game rather than following the "Samus, just do your shit" style of the first two. I tried the hardest difficulty and it still didn't feel any more difficult, just more tedious. I personally preferred the visual design of Echoes, it was more interesting and unique, but I felt like the original Metroid Prime's aesthetics had more charm. (I'm having trouble elaborating on it beyond that word)

Could you explain how the light world/dark world mechanic killed the exploration? If anything I felt like you had more exploration to be had because of it. Roughly twice as much actually.

I seem to be one of the few people who really liked the LW/DW gimmick. It definitely was a gimmick, but it was so deeply worked into the rest of the game that I didn't mind it. I dreaded the dark world sections, but I actually think that was a good thing. The dark world was more dangerous and I was constantly worried I'd get stuck in it without a light crystal. Which I think was exactly what they were going for with it. I do agree with a lot of the other response though, it would have benefited from a different shade of purple.

I really enjoyed it, but I agree on three of your four parts. For the first point I'd like to offer that the inclusion of NPCs to talk to, like the other Bounty Hunters and the marine-type soldiers (cannot remember their unit name), was just a sign that this had gotten too big for Samus to contain. No matter how bad ass she is, this situation was beyond her and she needed help.
I agree that was probably what they were going for, but it still did bother me. They felt more like someone to fall back on than anything else. I don't remember them helping you against an enemy that was too hard for her to fight alone, all I remember is them rescuing her from mundane dangers, like falling. Which she was in just as much risk of in the previous games. Even if it was done well, I'd miss the isolation from the previous games. It's something that I considered a staple of the series.

As most other people are listing their order of favorites, I might as well do mine as well:
1. Metroid Prime (I don't know what exactly it was about the game, it just felt like it was better made. The atmosphere was better developed, the game had more charm to it, and I'm sure that part of my liking it was that it was my first exposure to the series)
2. Metroid Prime: Echoes (Comes in VERY close behind. What it lost from the previous game it made up for with it's difficulty and an atmosphere, while not as well developed, I found more interesting. Also it boasts some of the best bosses out of any game I've played. Backtracking is a negative point however)
3. Metroid Prime Corruption (See first post)

I enjoyed it but I agree there were problems with it. The suit designs were a big disappointment especially after the designs in 2 and I agree the ending wasn't the greatest. Overall it was fun, and playing it on the hardest mode was, well, actually hard. Especially the giant golem boss.

SIDE NOTE: On an unrelated note I will never play Other M. I don't even consider it part of the series. *shudder*

I also adored the first two games. I still do.
I never even finished Corruption because I found it too tough. Unlike the OP, I actually found it to be a lot tougher than Echoes and I actually remember enjoying the control system as well. But yeah, I found it balls-hard and not half as interesting as the first two. It also felt more like a linear action game than a first-person adventure which the first two accomplished so damn successfully.

Corruption is the only one I've actually beat. Despite being the easiest of the bunch, I really loved the gameplay in it, and it's probably my favorite of the prime games.

Prime 1 is probably the best objectivly, but I never figured out the whole 'you must collect relics to progress' bit, so I never finished it. Cause I was dumb.

Echoes I didn't like much. The whole dark/light world mechanic just didn't seem to flow as well.
