We'll see, honestly. I don't like to waste my time worrying about a game prior to its release unless there are huge red flags. I don't really see them with MGS4.

The thing about MGS2 is that the introduction of Raiden was handled the wrong way. The story really didn't lend itself to making Raiden a worthy "successor" to Snake, but rather being an imitator. This combined with the fact that you got to play Snake, oh, probably about 2 hours worth of game time is part of what leads to all the Raiden hate.

The story also had too conveniently happy of an ending, whereas MGS1 had an ending which was nice but which was decidedly somber. MGS3 brought back this somberness and also decided to kick you in the ass doing it. MGS4 looks like more of the same, darker, hopeless, somber tone. If you had any doubts about that, a trailer featuring Snake putting a gun inside his mouth will pretty much change your mind.

I'm looking forward to it.

Thats a nice way of putting it, I would say MGS2 had the most mind numbingly stupid ending I could ever imagine, the final bas battle was cool but when Raiden climbs down into the street and people are just walking around when there are two people with guns and military super suits next to a giant fucking robot that just destroyed one of Americas biggest historical landmarks on Independace Day! Happy? Maybe. Bullshit? Without a doubt.

I half expected a beat cop to ticket them for loitering.

Raiden had a good story behind him but it was more in line for an RPG and not the war stuff MGS is known for. Originally all the tanker "take down metal gear" stuff was going to be the main plot (though Ocelot is still controlled by liquid) but due to a terrorist attack they changed the plot to avoid controversy by making the whole game around Snake being a vigilante. that and I still hate the whole idea on how MGS1 was just a whole big training session for the Patriots.

Anyways, back to MGS4. Anyone see the one trailer where we actually see a Young Snake? I'm expecting a plot twist where that one is Solid Snake and Old Snake is really Big Boss.

I wouldn't say that it couldn't happen. But from what I saw and heard it was just a joke Hideo threw in. He's in the same situation in the same suit, it doesn't make sense that its two people to me.

Ok so I saw a new trailer for MGS4 and while some of it seemed cool, alot of other stuff seem kind of odd to say the least. Now I know MGS has never been rooted in realism but in the trailer there was a beer chugging monkey, an arms dealer who looks a little pimp-tastic, a familiar character who wants you to call her Big Momma, a soldier shitting in a can and a group of elite cyber ninjas called...ahem...FROGS.

Now Im a huge fan of MGS, played them all several times and the more I hear about MGS, the more worried I get.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

P.S. Just for balance I dont own a PS3, I do own a 360 and Wii but I am intending to buy a PS3 when MGS4 and FFXIII hit the shelves depending on how good they are.
Not to be a ***** or whatever. From my experience with Metal Gear trailers and general hype, you never know anything about the game before it's released. Don't worry they never made huge unforgivable mistakes in the past so why should they start now?

Where did you hear about the joke thing? That and...of course now that I remembered....young snake could be another Les terribles whatever project Liquid always talks about.

I'm not a big MGS fan. I've only ever played 4 Metal Gear Games, MGS: Portable Ops, Metal Gear Ac!d 2, MGS on the GBC and the first 3D game on the PS1. I'm not a big $ony fan either, I usually buy Micro$oft. I may, however, be forced to buy a PS3 for MGS4 and the 2 FF13s.

Anyway, the game does look very good, the graphics are top notch and the gameplay looks (and this is a word many games fail to grasp) FUN.

*Covers ears* I'm not listening! MGS4 will be awesome! Anyone who says otherwise is wrong! FILTH AND LIES!

Seriously though, part of me deeply wants to have serious misgivings about it, but I keep myself positive through sheer force of will. It's a metal gear game. Even MGS2 was fun from a pure gameplay point of view. And goddamnit, despite them changing the classic and great MGS control scheme into some sort of sucky gears of war ripoff, it WILL BE FUN.

You hear me? It HAS to be! Otherwise a million fans will firebomb Hideo into oblivion. And I'll be there with them, lighting the fuse.

Well I've always enjoyed metal gear and whole mix of (Basic)realism mixed with fantasy, but lets go over a couple of bosses from each game:

MGS1 - Mind-reading gasmask-wearing Darth Vader, Clone that JUST DIDN'T DIE!!!
MGS2 - Female Neo with a rail gun, another guy that JUST DIDN'T DIE!!!
MGS3 - Antman...who happened to control hornets, GUY THAT JUST DIDN'..... oh wait :p & Spiderman on Drugs

We are going to see a whole lotta dude(ttes) with weird comic book powers in number four because thats what is popular. My guess for the villians:

A Yellow ninja/Blue ninja team that uses fire and ice attacks, oh and one of them has a rope and spear
A middle aged guy that has a green "Lamp" that creates objects out of nothing
A Sexy redhead with mind powers
A man in a cape that is stronger than 10 men, faster than a speeding bullet, can leap a building in a single bound, who's only weakness is a piece of metal that you find in the level

All totally original characters

But Big Boss died in Metal Gear 2, if I remember correctly.
Anyway, the game looks amazing, even if snake is reaaally old, I don't care about that.
I loved the Psycho Mantis fight, and it looked even more amazing in clear 3D graphics on the GCN.
"So, you like to play The Wind Waker?!"
And the end is a great boss fight, it made you have to actually think.
But my favourite's probably Volgin on the Shagohod while on the bike and then on your own. I can beat both forms in about a minute for the first and about twenty seconds for the second one.
And Volgin isn't gay. He's bisexual.
But I'm still playing MGS3 now. As I type. Did you know that in Groznyj Grad when you need to pretend to be Raikov if you put down a bunch of porno mags, all the soldiers except Raikov will read them?
And that if at the end of the game when you need to lead EVA through the woods, you knock her out and lie down next to her and she begins to have "interesting dreams" about Snake?
And after speaking with Granin (fat guy in the base before the Fear), stand next to his door and he'll begin to mumble things in his sleep?
Also, why does everyone think the Fear's so hard to beat? I can beat him in less than 10 seconds.
I really should try for a speedrun some day.

I wasn't actually going to get involved in this discussion, but this sort of obscure reference to Metal Gear lore made me dive in faster than Wiki-man on his favourite article:

The Les Infants Terribles project was conducted in the late 70s, as far as I can recall vaguely. It spawned Solid, Solidus and Liquid Snake. Then Big Boss got taken down in the original Metal Gear series, and his genes were done away with. Thus, there's only three clones about - and they were all genetically engineered to age faster (Agent 47 style) and are technically, all identical. You raise a very nice idea Raptor, by suggesting that Big Boss is still around and its just a fiendish trick: But look at Solidus by the end of MGS2: He's practically an old man. It can only be expected that Liquid (if he still had is body) and Solid have also aged in line with their fellow clone. It would be good to play as a younger Solid in a flashback, though. At least it provides a prime opportunity to wrap up the many loose ends of the franchise.

Overall, I believe that MGS4 will simply focus on Solid trying to prevent another Les Infants Terribles from eradicating the remaining Big Boss DNA on the planet - including his own.

Oh, I am highly excited for MGS4. Being a huge MGS fan, however, I am a tad worried. Unlike most fans (and I can say this out of my own personal experience with many members of MGS fandom), my favourite MGS game was MGS2. It was deep, thought-provoking, played with the video game medium, and required the player to put "puzzle-pieces" together to get the full experience. I loved that. Then again, MGS2 was also my first MGS, so it may just be my "love of the first game played" talking. MGS was quite nice, and MGS3 was no slouch either, but my heart will always be with MGS2. As such, I am happy that MGS4 will be a true sequel to MGS2. It has been announced numerous times that all the mysteries of the MGS series will be answered in MGS4, and although I know that the mysteries were meant to be unsolved in MGS2 when it first appeared (it was supposed to be the last, after all), I'm glad that they seem to be tying up loose ends. In that vein, though, MGS4 could either be amazing or a disappointment. In my opinion, if they go back to the MGS2 route and blow my mind yet again while answering the mysteries, then I shall be satisfied. If they make a game, however, that answers all the questions but does little else, then I will feel as if opportunity was immensely squandered. For MGS4 to be great in my eyes, it would have to combine the mind-bending-ness of MGS2 with the emotion of MGS3 (I thought that MGS3, while lacking in overall plot, was the best emotionally of the series, mainly due to the relationship between Naked Snake and the Boss).

So am I worried about MGS4? Yes, I am. This game could be very easy to mess up (like how the movie for Watchmen could very easily become terrible). But I have hope. If done right, MGS4 could be one of the best games ever (in my humble opinion), and it's that possibility that keeps me craving for more.

Plus, I want to see if they finally end the story of Solid Snake like they promised. I truly hope they do. I could be fine if the series still continued without him, but his tale needs to end. Any more, and they risk milking the series (and they're pretty damn close to doing that even now).

Big Boss suppossibly died from a home made flamethrower....they could bring him back if they wanted to.

Also.......you could say foxdie somehow counteracted the aging thing that effected Solidus....hence why Liquid captured Naomi.

That and even if this is the end of Solid Snake....we'll just have other chapters that fill in the in between of chapters....ala Metroid Prime. The series just won't be the same without either Solid or naked snake as the main character. It would be like making the next Zelda game have a robot zombie ninja as the main character. Granted it's cool/interesting but it just doesn't feel right.

Ah, but in Zelda, you are not telling one large cohesive story (no matter how many Zelda fanboys argue otherwise; I can talk, I used to be one of them). MGS (or to be specific, the tale of Solid Snake), however, is a grand, singular tale. And like all good tales, it must end or it gets ruined. Prime example of this is how Disney is now a terrible animation company. They took their classics, made horrible sequels, and as such, ruined everything. For a story to be good and remain as such, it must be able to end (unless its written in a way where it can be done for nearly ever, like Zelda). Snake's tale is over. If it's not, then MGS will turn from a series that could be used to argue the importance of video games to another milked franchise.

I know some may not agree with me on this, but MGS is one of the few video game serieses (sp?) that I know that can hold up the argument for games being art (MGS2 especially). Then again, that may be just me. And my definition of art is quite vast. =P
