Minecraft creator Notch has suggested he's going to add "a kind of narrative" to the game in the form of achievement trees. http://bit.ly/dEqKFX

Do you think this would be good for Minecraft? Or will a narrative that encourages the player to do certain things ruin the sandbox element of the game?

If you don't have a direction to go or a goal to reach a game will quickly become boring, much of Minecraft is thinking of a goal and reaching it, an achievement system might give you a nudge to start up a goal.

Achievements are optional so if you're not imaginative (like me) you have to something to do in a form of a quest. So Yes.

So long as it can be disabled or ignored, then yes, it's a good thing. It will get new players more interested, and add some more overall playtime to the game(not that there isn't enough of that).

I don't really mind one way or another. I usually don't care about achievements, to be honest. I just play how I want. If I happen to get an achievement while doing so, it's just an unexpected bonus. There have been a few occasions where I decide to tackle a few, but it's more about seeing if I could pull them off instead of using them for bragging rights.

It sounds like many of Minecraft's early-game achievements would be kind of like an alternative to a tutorial. If it helps new players learn the ropes without bashing them over the head with it, I wouldn't mind at all.

A tutorial would be nice, but please god no achievements. Minecraft is not an achievement game, it's a building game.

Besides, if there are achievements, I'll feel pressured to get them no matter what, which would suck.

Course, it 'll let people do other things appart building and are entirely optionnal. So if you don't want them or care don't do them.

As usual with achievements, they're there for the people that want them and those who don't don't have to bother. I don't see how this could possibly be a bad thing?

I think it's a great thing.

It adds some narrative for those people who prefer a more goal based game.
And for those who don't there is no obligation to bother with them.

Good idea, methinks. It gives a set of goals to someone who doesn't know what to do.

The problem with Minecraft is, that once you've built your fortress, explored a lot of caves, mined enough resources to last you a lifetime, built a roller coaster for your mine carts, and fitted your living room with a record player and some paintings, made a disturbing trip into the Nether, etc... there is nothing left to do except building a life size replica of USS Enterprise, which is not my idea of fun.

Minecraft definitely needs more stuff to do and reasons to explore. Achievements could help with that.
Would be awesome if you could find rare artifacts, come across ancient ruins, or maybe even find some NPCs.

What kind of achivments would those be anyway? Hit bedrock? Finx X Diamonds? Build X tall pillar of cobblestone?

As someone said, I would be more comfortable calling them "side-quests" so people won't so easily start to do them just for bragging rights. They should also offer some sort of reward, like a hard side-quest could reward you with a special throne item.

Edit: Minecraft, however, doesn't necessarily require achievements. I had trouble to find what to do, too, but then I began building my Partheneon and now I'm one happy duck.
15 blocks high,31 blocks wide and 72 blocks long. All smooth stone...

I don't see how achievments could hurt the game. They could drive both newcomers and jaded vets to try funny stuff. Those who don't like it can just ignore them.

Now, achievments that sum "points" and that could generate "I have a bigger e-peen" discussions, those I wish would just never be implemented.

So YES to achievments and NO to any kind of stupid gamerscore.
