so Minecraft has a hardcore mode now, your world is deleted when you die. but why would you ever want to do that? on normal games, it's great because it gives you a challenge to overcome before you win; but with minecraft, there is no goal, there's no way to win.
in survival, you can play until you get bored, and you may lose your stuff sometimes, but you can't win or lose, you just theoreticaly play forever and gradualy evolve the world by building cool stuff.
in hardcore, the only option is losing. same as survival, you can play as long as you want but you'll never win. different from survival, inevitably, you'll lose at some point.

what i'm getting at is notch seems to have his priorities mixed up. adding hardcore right now is completely pointless. it's a fine idea, but he needs to add some kind of incentive first, or alongside it.

also, while i'm here, i might as well add that official mod support has been neglected long enough. that also needs to be moved up on the priority list. that button down there that says 'mods and texture packs' has been promising a world where mods don't break every time a patch comes out far too long.

hmmmm... terraria had a better approach: when you die, you drop all your items, you lose all of your(possible) stats, and you drop a tombstone, followed by a respawn. i truly have to agree with you on this one, that minecraft hardcore sucks.

Nope, but then I'll probably never play hardcore. I'm not a hardcore kinda gal really, regardless of game.

I can see the point of it though. Not dying - and thus deleting the world - is a way of winning the game; in fact, every time you survive a fall, an exploding creeper, or save yourself from drowning you win. In a way it mimics real life in a very simplistic fashion.

... Woah, went a bit philosophical on you there, sorry.

The incentive, like with anything else in Minecraft, comes from the players themselves.

You play hardcore mode because you want to play with those stakes, not because there's some kind of in-game reward.

If that doesn't interest you, fine... the majority of ppl, myself included, are simply not interested in a rogue-like experience. But for those that do want it, they will now have that option.

Interesting to see them put this in. My brother and I do something similar, though volentary.
We have to create a portal to the Nether, destroy the gate Nether-side, go a significante distance away, and then we are allowed to rebuild the portal and flee. If we should die sometime while trying to do all that, we must delete the game.
Nice to see that him and I are not the only people who are deleting saves faster than a company shreds papers.

You know, if a "Hardcore" mode comes out for Survival Multiplayer, i can see amazing combat servers popping up.

You just join, it drops you into an arena with 20 other people, and when someone dies, another person drops in. A constant stream of combat, death, and the will to live for as long as possible.

I personally, wont be playing it. Ive never been a fan of the idea. But i can see it being great for challenge/adventure maps too. You have to go through it in one go, so give it your all!

Hmmm. Well I like building insanely long, difficult projects so I'm going to say no to these stakes with that world. However, I might try it out. It isn't that bad seeing as you have the option to not do it. Oh and game immersion, blah blah stuff.

I already play Minecraft Hardcore. I just delete my saves manually when the creepers finally get me. I treat it like I treat Nethack and Dwarf Fortress: Losing is Fun.
