So yeah, im interested as to who would like to see an MMORPG on the console, I personally think it would be an interesting project for a game producer to look into, but I dont think it would have the edge that the PC MMORPG's have. It would be way more complicated getting around the controller configuration considering we cant have macros and shortcuts etc as we dont have a keyboard and mouse. Then again why dont they make a keyboard and mouse to ship with the game perhaps?

I dunno.. Thoughts guys?

I'd like to see it attempted, but I can guarantee it'll be ridden with bugs and a squalid community. Without the dedicated servers and modertaion that online PC gaming carries, a console MMORPG would be filled with the assholes with mics from MW2 and its ilk.

I'm not saying it would be bad. If anything, consoles need more games with different online modes. Deathmatches and co-op are great, but nothing has really pushed on MMORPG. Left 4 Dead is the closest to what I'm picturing. Not necessarily MMORPG, but a zombie survival with different classes to choose from and stats to alter. I'm not thinking thousands of people, rather hundreds across a big city map (like GTA IV).

erm final fantasy XI was on 360
FFXIV is coming out on PS3 in march. Also, FFXI and FFXIV are preferrable to use console controllers, even on computer

There is Final Fantasy XIV and DC Universe Online coming up isn't there? FFXIV is at least coming to PS3, and I heard DC would be too. Should be fun I think, as FF already works on console, so an MMO of it should easily fit with the controller.

Edit: Damn ninjas...

Why would it have to be designed to work exactly the same as existing PC MMOs? That would be silly to not take the advantages and disadvantages of the console(s) they're working with into consideration, starting at the basic gameplay and interface level. Sure, something trying to be exactly like WoW probably wouldn't quite work out, but there's no fundamental law of the universe that says that's how it has to. It would probably force the game to play differently, but I think that's a good thing rather than yet another WoW clone.

I'm not sure what dedicated servers have to do with an MMO, considering there are generally no private servers for any major PC ones, at least not legitimate/legal ones. Can't think of any reason why it couldn't or wouldn't be moderated the same way, either.

All that said, I don't care one way or the other, since I don't have any of the current consoles other than a half-broken Wii that I don't use much, and even if I did have one of the others, it's highly unlikely I'd be getting or playing an MMO on them anyway. Just because I'm not interested doesn't mean someone out there couldn't make it work, though.

MMO's on consoles have restriction, where a PC MMO can evolve and transform itself over time. The problem is with a console MMO, you already have the basic game using all the system ressources, if you can't change the mechanics or improve them over time, it's going to get old fast.

It can work and it has been proven as such. The question only exists if the developers are aware that a Thumbstick should not equal a cursor.

I personally have doubts that RPGs of the MMO type would necessarily be the best to port, but hey, we have sene it can work if the RPG does not demand such a massive spell bar like WoW or simmilar. Unless of course there is a new control scheme which would make it (to smaller degre) work about as good. But if and when such things come to be is still open as I have not yet seen the interface of FF11 or 14

Actually a good point. Hardly any MMO (specifically RPGs) get along without a few mods, from what I know. Doubt those would be easy to transfer over to a console, especially with the 360's restrictions by Microsoft.

Yeah You couldnt get mods either, like with WoW there ares tonnes of mods. Also, would we connect to dedicated servers? Consoles arent Dedicated server friendly really. Imagine a f*ckload of people connecting to someones router, FAIL.

The problem is not enough harddrive space.

MMOs are BIG and the more succesful ones like WOW, keep adding new content and tweak existing stuff.

A PS3 MMO can only use less than 20 GB (the most basic PS3 SKU) and a xbox360 MMO would have to work with the 4GB flash.

A console MMO would need years of beta testing before the actual release, or suck.

All this doomsaying bout the impossibility or improbability of a console MMORPG, all these "faults" pointed out in the concept of a console MMORPG are hilarious, especially given that there has been a successful console MMORPG for years.

FF XI was built from the ground up for the PS2. It was quickly ported to the PC, and later to the 360. It still exists and is still played on all 3 platforms. Not only is it frequently updated, tweaked & patched, but numerous expansion packs have been released for it on all platforms. Even more significant is that players from all platforms & regions play on the same servers; Japanese PS2 players are on the same servers as American PC players and European 360 players, which remedies any concerns of bad console community. FF XIV is also planned for release on both PS3 and PC with the exact same cross-platform play. DC Online is also due to be released for the PS3.

It is possible to make a console MMO, it has been done. It clearly isn't as difficult as you're all attempting to make it sound, as FF XI has always had, from what I can tell, a relatively small playerbase. It isn't exactly rolling in funding with which to remedy a supposed billion problems in its console incarnations. It doesn't need to be - there simply aren't that many issues to work around.

Phantasy Star! :D worked.
I never played that, how many players could be online at once though? I assume the servers were external dedicated?
the most you would see people is if everyone was in a certian room where you got your missions then you would run around with MAX 4-5 people ( i forgot how many) the whole mmo part was BS...it was queuing for a mission and getting grouped with people..thats it really

So not entirely an MMORPG...

There's going to be DUST 514, an MMOFPS for the 360.
Dunno how it will go. Personally I think it'd be better on PC.
