Who wouldn't send the robot? You can always back up its memories or repair it when it gets back.
Why don't we have space suits?
acid, acidacidacidacidacidacidacid... acid...
Me:Ok so we don't have space suits.
Robot: YES
Me: That means it's up to you to go and retrieve that plant.
Robot: BUT I WILL RUST. YOU NEED ME TO NAVIGATE.
Me: No problem we can just copy your Brain files and upload them to the ships onboard computer where you can navigate from there and we can later put your mind into a new body.
Robot: SOUNDS LOGICAL. I SHALL GO NOW. *goes out airlock*
Half hour later:
Robot: *drags self into airlock*
Me: Robot did you get the plant?
Robot: YEZ I HAVE RET- VVVZT- REVED THE PLANT
Me: You have saved humanity!!!
nothing to copy it on
And if you see my previous post, this counts as a stupid condition. My reasoning being that there has to be a way to connect the robot's systems to the ship, even if it's wireless, otherwise the data it has is of no use anyway and thus the robot's entire purpose for being there is non-existent. So you would simply copy the data straight to the ship anyway before sending the robot out. It's as simple as that, and is guaranteed to work as a solution.
nope, not possible, sorry

no room in the onboard computer? nobody packed a flash drive? maybe the robot could type out all it's programming on a piece of paper. Or we can coat the robot in plastic wrap to keep out the acid.

Ok saying that the robot can't be saved in any way I'd send it out anyway.(after having it teach me and the other crewmembers how to navigate)

GENIUS!
Let's say that in this hypothetical situation, if you sent the robot out then it would be killed. No backups or anything. You would never see it again.
(already answered)^

It's just a robot. Even if it is self aware you can always manufacture more just like it.

Robot, but upload a copy his AI to the a database in the ship so you can access it on your way home.
Hell, its a robot so it will likely be repairable after its trip.

i voted robot because...well...dude its a robot...and i dont think they would only send a robot im sure someone has to be atleast semi-compitant to get us home

but if i could i would suggest the scientest attempt to make some sort of breathing apperatus

if not to help breath the acid-air of death then atleast keep it out of the airway for aslong as possible

Then why is the robot there? Why does it have this data, and why is it the only thing to have the data at all? If it's "not possible" to transfer the data, as you say, then that means, by definition, the data cannot be used on the ship. However, that data inside the robot is the only thing that will allow the crew to get home, as according the the OP it's all the navigational data and whatnot. Meaning that if the data can't be transferred then the crew can't get home, so they'll all die anyway and the foliage is of zero use, thus refuting the entire point of the thread and original question from the start. It's basically a paradox of pointlessness, caused by your stubborn refusal to understand basic logic. So there must be a way for the data to be transferred otherwise the original question is completely meaningless.

Maybe because the robot has a useful skillset? Maybe because he is an awesome person?
If you're going to post silly stuff like that in a logic debate then I'm not going to take you seriously, just so's you know.

Guys, please don't try to argue logic with me. I had a housemate for one and a half years who did Philosophy and would argue logic and paradoxes with me regularly. I did Logic as a module at university last semester. I do various logic puzzles in my spare time. For fun. And I've done them since the age of, roughly, six years old, when I joined Mensa. I am a logic king. So you're going to lose this argument. Deal with it.

Robots may be manufactured the same, but their personalities develop entirely different over the years. They become unique with their own personal preferences.

You are wasting a unique person.
oh well it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the good of humanity.

Depends on skills, if there is only;
1 gun
1 scientist
1 navigator
1 doctor

and some other useless people-I'd send the useless people

I'm not racist, but the logical one is the minority. Since he/she has no special skills and everyone else is valuable in one way or another. The non-asshole/non-logical solution is to send the bot, since "All life is sacred and it's immoral and racist to send out the minority! blah blah blah"

Also, the robot is self aware, so no question. I send the [strike/]token black guy[/S] minority.

i also took philosophy, so this is about to get interesting. the robot has a purpose of testing moral rights and wrongs, and THAT, my friend, is the true purpose of the experiment. and to answer your other question, the robot knows the navigation THE BEST. so there is a chance of survival, but its a major risk.

I have an equally brilliant moral choice scenario.

You are at home with your family (your parents, brother, sister and beloved family dog) when news of a Tornado sweeping through your county comes on the TV.

You all go down into your basement/shelter but the door won't close properly, so you need to nail it shut before the Tornado hits in about 15 minutes.

What do you use to drive the nails into the wood across the door, thus ensuring the survival of your family as a whole:

1) Your fists?
2) Your Father's head?
3) Your Mother's face?
4) Your little Brother's elbows?
5) A Hammer?
6) Your little Sister's kneecaps?
7) The beloved family dog?
8) Your Mexican gardener/maid?

edit: also the Mexicans are self aware, but they haven't done a full day's work yet.

Send out a Dexterous Anthropomorphic Robotic Testbed. The space people who sent us ought to have had us bring along an expendable robot. If not, then the scientist, because if I had a space team, then I would accept no scientist less than Gordon Freeman, who always brings an HEV suit.
