I see where you're coming from; your initial post just came across as though FPS's were incapable of good storylines. I will admit, there are a lot of FPS's out there that make me go "What the FUCK were the writers thinking?"

First things first, FPS's really need to start letting me see my damn feet.

Nothing kills immersion more than looking down and realizing your just a floating camera with arms...

As for which type of cutscene I would prefer, I'll take the one that lets me see my damn feet.
its the seventh generation of gaming? seriously attach a fucking body to my floating arms. FPSs need to have better stories, period. they need a solid, chilling, exciting and immserive story like Gears of War, COD4 (even Yahtzee liked it, thats fucking impressive), Resistance, Killzone 2, just to name so

edit: BioShock. def need to include that

Well, there's always the way Black handled it.

Lots of action for a whole stage, then cutscenes in the middle that were handled as flashbacks through a surveillance camera.

And now that I think about it, I think I actually liked the story of Black. Add that one to the list. :p

I don't like the current trend (started, I think, with Half-Life [correct me if I'm wrong]) where you play someone with no voicebox in order to add to the immersion. I just started playing through the Halo: CE campaign (for the first time, believe it or not) and I love the third-person cutscenes. A protagonist should talk and have stated motivations, instead of being an avatar empty of personality.

It's funny your character dosn't say "Oh my GOD! my legs are gone! HELP!"

OT:AVP does both right now

It would be nice to have both first-person and third-person cutscenes. Like, first-person for shorter cutscenes and third-person for story cutscenes.

Unfortunately developers tend to confine their game only to one style of cutscenes. Confining your game to first-person cutscenes is definitely worse than having only third-person cutscenes though.

Also, Half-Life 2's cutscenes are overrated. Half-Life 1 and the expansions had okay cutscenes because at least you could imagine that Gordon/Shephard/Barney said something during some of them. In 2, you're pretty much a wallflower.

Alyx: Blaa blaa blaa.
Kleiner: Blaa blaa blaa.
Gordon: ...
Alyx: Blaa blaa blaa.
Kleiner: Blaa blaa blaa.
Gordon: ...
Alyx&Kleiner: Gordon, go do the job.
Gordon: ...

They're also unskippable.

I like first person cutscenes, the way Crysis did them, allowing for some cutscene power to the max [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CutscenePowerToTheMax], but also immersed the player in their surroundings.

Come to think of it, I quite liked Crysis.

I personally think that they should have no cutscenes, Half life 2 is one of the best FPSs ever, and it was cinematic without having any cutscenes. more games should do that

If only it could be adjusted according to setting. If you are playing in 1st, the cutscenes would be first, & if you were set in 3ed, the cutscenes would be in 3ed. I never player in 1st person personally.

I much prefer first person cut scenes because I find that switching to the third person breaks immersion

Yeah, there should be some kind of development in FPS genre. Where are my legs? Why such a basic ability like lean is such an luxury not to mention other useful body functions? And yeah, I prefer 3rd person view in cutscenes.

the funny part is that you arent a floating camera with hands, becuase then in multiplayer everyone would be floating cameras.

Not just feet (and legs). Last time I checked, I could see everything up to my chest when I looked down, and I'd like that to be true in first-person games as well. It's just as terrible to realize that you're nothing but a head on a pair of legs and arms.

In alot of FPS, all the cut-scenes are from first person view, and for me it kinda makes the cutscenes less exicitng. When I played BFBC2 single-player I loved how most of the cut-scenes were from the third-person perspective. IMO it makes the scenes more exiting. Also I noticed for some reason that in alot of games when the cut-scenes are from first person view, you suddenly stop talking, like in MW2, when u start controlling Soap, suddenly he stops talking when he did talk when you werent him. The only games that I have seen before that have had the character still talk during first-person view cut-scenes was in crysis.

so should more FPS have cut-scenes from third-person perspective?
It depends on what they're going for.

In games that are intended to be heavily immersion-based, it works. It worked in COD2 (not so much MW, but MW failed plotwise in general.) I couldn't see Bioshock having third party cutscenes.

On the other hand, games where there is a more defined main character third person works better. Gears and Halo both work better that way.

BC2 actually has me confused. Am I one of the guys I keep seeming in the cutscenes? Which one?

I find that third person cutscenes in first person games are PERFECT. Because not only does it give us a break from first person (which gets annoying after a while) - but it shows us what our character looks like!
