Seriously, all the Counter Strike and Halo maps COMBINED are not as iconic as Rainbow Road.

This poll is one of the few I can outright declare to be wrong.

This map or that map from Halo, CS, TF2 might be good and played a lot, but it's just another FPS map. Rainbow Road is an iconic thing in all of gaming.
It survives across generations in perpetuity as a well known experience by the majority of gamers.

Funny, the two right off the top of my head, were, in order: 2Fort and Blood Gulch.

Multiplayer map is a kinda broad term; I think it's interesting that people have stronger associations with it in regards to FPS games than racers or RTS or MOBA, whatever... If I had to hazard a guess as to why, it would probably be to do remembering the dimensions of a (virtual) physical space by way of exploring it 'with your eyes' at ground level. We form stronger associations of memory to spaces we move through, even if they don't exist.

As an aside, I never felt wake island was a particularly strong map, in of itself; just one that was recognized and recycled a lot. While I think it's fair to complain that 2Fort of Blood Gulch lend themselves to 'samey' matches, they're nearly perfect design of symmetrical 'figure 8' CTF maps.

When it comes to sheer iconic power Counter-Strike holds a special place in FPSs, and de_dust has not only existed in every damn iteration of the thing since 1999, but been the single most popular map in it as well.
Going to have to disagree with de_dust being the most popular map when de_dust2 probably gets more play time in every version, and is the better map by a long shot. Hell, until the version in CS:GO appeared, I'd say de_dust was ridiculously unbalanced. Not to say de_dust doesn't have it's charm or that it's not popular, but de_dust2 certainly surpassed it as the go to map a long time ago.

Ummm, why isn't there a Quake 2 "Edge" Map option? That level invited me into multiplayer and has not been topped by anything I've played since :)I don't know about the rest of the world, but that level alone accounted for 95% of all mutliplayer in my country, before CS reared its ugly head.

Caspian Border from BF3, not (2014), its O.K. with the Obliteration game mode, but the games still bad.
I'd imagine COD 4 has some under its belt.
Chernarus from DayZ, yeah I went there, a 225km (square) map, its iconic for me anyway.

Your first point is irrelevant since many maps in games like CS appear in every iteration, and have easily been among the most played PC games in history, with sales of the entire series being in the multiple tens of millions. And saying the majority of gamers are familiar with Rainbow Road while also implying the same number wouldn't be familiar with maps from games like CS is fairly presumptuous without any way of really backing it up.

DotA, no?

For shooters it would be something like Deck16, Facing Worlds or Morpheus for me, but that's probably nostalgia. I don't think you really know the maps from games you haven't played, except maybe in case of DotA since it got too huge to overlook.

Either Facing Worlds or Deck 17 from Unreal Tournament. Both had remakes in later versions, and Deck 17 in particular is probably one of the most fun and well designed fps maps ever made.

Iconic is the wrong word for this topic. It doesn't simply mean 'most famous'; it specifies something that is considered the best representative of a larger trend or group. An 'iconic' map would be one that has influenced the design of many other multiplayer maps, or demonstrates all the traits associated with good design.

As for most famous, probably dust. Don't know anyone who hasn't dabbled in multiplayer shooters and has never played dust.

de_dust
Followed by The Longest Yard, Facing Worlds, Torlan, Final Destination (*wretches*)

Oh, and Katabatic, but that doesn't count since it's Tribes.

Rainbow Road would be iconic...if it was constant. And it isn't.
It's a different design each time, and I just wasn't all that impressed with them after MK3; I dunno, the "magic" wore off for me. (of course, the "magic" of Mario Kart as a whole wore off for me after Double Dash)

the three maps for me would be Facility (or felicity in perfect dark's case.) Morpheus (unreal Tournament) and de_dust/2 because they were both as popular as each other.

The only one in the poll that I am even remotely familiar with is Wake Island, but was surprised not to see the likes of Campgrounds. I mean, it's fucking Campgrounds!!!1one

I hated The Longest Yard. Absolutely hated it. It always turned into "rail gun nightmare" no matter how well I did, I still felt horrible afterwards.
That's the point I should have made. There is no middle ground on that map (literally too) - you either loved it or hated it. When I saw it cycle up I died a little on the inside; but did I recognise it? and will I remember it? Oh yes - it's iconic.

Q3DM17 'The Longest Yard'

Maybe I'm just old though.
Sad to see that this didn't make the shortlist. Although I was happily surprised to see Wake Island there.

Blood gulch. Anybody who has played Halo or big into FPS knows blood gulch. It will always hold a spot in my heart
