Long story short, I can't see 3D adding anything to storytelling.
That really depends on the kind of storytelling. In games in particular, but also some movies (like Avatar) the setting can be a story in itself, and the graphics is an important part of that story. If 3D can make those well-designed game worlds come to life even more, then it does add something to the storytelling.
I'm going to disagree on a few points.

First, graphics do not make a game. I use to think that, but now I realize that graphics are nice and pretty, but story, gameplay, and fun are what's important. Some of my all time favorite games have crappy graphics by today's standards (though at the time, some were mind blowing).

Second, Avatar was an awesome movie in general. The 3D effects added nothing. Not even as a gimmick. I can name plenty of family members who saw it on DVD and loved it without 3D effects. Like I said in the initial post, I didn't even notice the 3D effects in the movie. They did nothing to me.

Third, while the world of Avatar was important to the plot, making leaves pop out at you does not enhance the experience. To say that this made it seem more real is not true. Watch it in 2D. I guarantee the movie is just as good without 3D effects. To really make it seem real, we would need to smell the environment, the flowers, the air. That would truly enhance the experience.

I agree that well designed worlds can make the world in a movie or game come to life, 3D does not add to the experience. If anything, it detracts from the world, by making the audience concentrate on how cool the 3D is. Think of it this way, if you don't notice the effects, what is the point? Do you notice that movies, shows, or games are in color? Of course not. It's expected. So if 3D becomes the norm, how is it special? How does it contribute? Today, we seem to think that some 3D movies are better than they are because they are in 3D. Case in point, my own posts about My Bloody Valentine. But if that was common, then My Bloody Valentine would just be what it is without 3D. A crappy movie.

Thanks for posting, and I hope to hear more of your thoughts!
Graphics do not make a game, but with certain games it contributes a lot. I still think that in some cases, the world - both through graphics and music, can be the most enjoyable part of the game. I for instance think Super Metroid is such a game (though since it is a SNES game it might be a bad example to use here). Even without good gameplay, Super Metroid would have been great due to the atmosphere it creates.

On Avatar - I have seen both versions and see your point, even though I personally disagree.

And yes, I guess once 3D becomes the norm it won't be that great anymore, but pleasure is fleeting, so we should at least try to enjoy it while it is still new and fresh.

3D does not always add to the experience of a movie. And I don't think it will do anything for games.

3D is a gimmick, it was always a gimmick, and given recent 3D movies it will always be a gimmick. The vast majority of 3D films either tack it on as a way to get more money or completely rely on it in a feeble attempt to make an utterly appalling movie fun to look at.

this technology is going nowhere. experiment with it until you can make holographic projections media industry, but for the love of god/allah/krishna/zeus/lucifer, keep it out of consumer products.

of course my argument is completely worthless as long as people keep paying more money for 3D stuff...

can't form an ironclad opinion as i've only experienced 3D once (avatar, felt it was below average), and the only things 3D gave me from the experience were headaches and a sense of vertigo.

Maybe when I'm done with college and have a good job and the price of 3Dtvs go down significantly and then maybe I'll buy it. Until then, I am good with my HDtv I won in a raffle.

The 3D hype has been around periodically, and I don't think it'll be much more of a breakthrough than it was last time 'round. Tho I don't want to be bad sport, if the gaming or movie industry creates something that can win me over, I'm in. So far though, it's all been wasted money and effort.

ps: MineCraft's got an awesome 3D mode :p Tho, it isn't really worth the headache.
