Sometimesay - Depends on the game.

Diablo 2 was my go to music game. Diablo 3 will likely be as well after a few playthroughs.
I'll play music during heavy grind on RPG's. Mass Effect 2's two-hour planet scanning will be filled my music. Messing around in Skyrim to up skills, put on some music.

More casual games like Advanced Wars, Puzzle Quest, Civ 5, Defense Grid are also good examples of music games.

As soon as a game becomes heavily engaging, I'd rather listen to the in-game music.

Like most here I have to say that it depends. Tactical games where I need to be patient and I possibly need to hear things from the game I will never listen to music. If I have played the game before and there's no talking I want to catch then I will play music. If the games are just casual and relaxing I will play music to it.

Those rare times I play MMORPG I will always have music in order to get some entertainment while I grind countless enemies.

Depending on what is happening, if plot is going down, I would not listen to music, but if I am just playing or online, I have music going usually always.

Very rarely maybe if I just got some new stuff that I really want to listen to.
But most of the time im happy enough just listening to the sounds of the game as you would listen to the sounds of nature.

depends on alot of things

in games like new vegas/fallout 3/oblivion and such? you betcha, if i'm goin to be explorin, it's gonna be to my own tunes.

most other games? nope, i like the pacing/music score set forth by the developer usually, so i'd prefer to leave it at that. (not to say it's wrong, just what i prefer.)

Depends on the game.

Not on games that have dialogue I need to hear or magnificent in-game music. For example, Skyrim and Civilization V, respectively.

More often on BF3. Not so much on CS:S, especially if I'm playing at all seriously and need to hear the sounds.

SpaceChem is great with music on the background. Elasto Mania, when I played it, definitely music.

I've only ever been able to listen to music for driving games and I had two mixes created for L4D/L4D2. My Human and Infected mixes. Otherwise I just can't listen to music and game.

I will listen to pandora or grooveshark while I'm playing LoL or NBA 2k11. Mostly for games where the sound isn't that important. I don't listen to music when playing Mass Effect for example.

Occasionally. I play podcasts over ME3 multiplayer sometimes, too, when I'm just grinding. Which is all the time because SON OF A ***** I JUST WANT A FUCKING TEMPEST I HAVE ALMOST EVERY CHARACTER UNLOCKED AND I'VE PROMOTED MAYBE A DOZEN AND I STILL DON'T HAVE A FUCKING TEMPEST

Games that aren't text/speech heavy, I usually listen to stand-up comedy. Anything else, I usually listen to any of my music, specific genres/types of games do not affect the kind of music I listen to. Games like Limbo or Braid however, I don't listen to anything other than the in-game music/sound effects for they are quite bad-ass.

Sometimes, when I used to play in ladders/tournies with my clan I liked to get some songs on when we started practice before a game. Turn them off for the last ten minutes or so and then go into the game, just got me in the right zone for it really...

Otherwise rarely, I sometimes play it with games where I don't like the music but that's rare, like I was playing WC3 custom maps so I ditched the ingame and went for my own music. Normally I go with the game music, it fits.

eta: Oh yeah with New Vegas and 3 I just used my own music, the in game was meh after a while. Same with Skyrim and Oblivion actually...

Absolutely, I sometimes listen to music while playing Quake Live, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory or other games, mainly online shooters, not on every single game mind you, it should be considered a sin to play your own music while playing Age of Conan, but sometimes the soundtrack of Guild Wars: Factions makes me snore (seriously, WTF was Jeremy Soule thinkng when he made the Factions soundtrack!??, clearly the weakest part of Guild Wars' soundtrack IMO).

So yeah, sometimes, I like to listen to the game's music, but only if I'm sick of it or if it lacks of any music thereof, then I put my own soundtrack.

I usually try to listen to things that will keep me calm since i get ticked off at games kinda quickly, so i use a 10hr loop so i don't have to alt-tab everytime. Usually it's ievan polkka or song of storms + rainy mood or i loop destination by shk or any other 2010 Korean pop songs... Yea it's a weird list.
