I had recently bought an Xbox myself. For three of the following reasons: Assassin's Creed (and 2 too.), Fallout 3, and Fable (and 2 on this one too).

Mario Kart is a game for five year olds. Not that that's a bad thing, but it's hardly made for older gamers.

To let people know, the only PC game I can run with any efficiency is Team Fortress 2, and thats on my mac. My PC is utter crap. I might post the stats eventually for sympathy points.
@Katsa5 I actually downloaded the first episode of Fable 2. I can't wait to try it out.

If you're looking for a great JRPG get Tales of Vesperia. It has great characters, a solid story and a battle system that's just plain fun. It's also tied for my favorite 360 game.

If you like fighting games then get Blazblue: Calamity Trigger, my other favorite. It's definitely the best fighter that's come out in a long time. It actually has a good story for a fighter, 12 quirky characters that all play differently and of course, fantastic fighting. If you feel like waiting, Super Street Fighter 4 is coming out as well and that's sure to be good.

I'll also recommend my most anticipated game right now, Brutal Legend. It comes out on the 13th. It'll have an awesome metal fantasy world, the voice talents of Jack Black and several metal greats, fantastic humor, a great soundtrack and at least a decent multiplayer mode. Go download the demo and give it a try.

If you don't have a PC for gaming, then definitely the Orange Box. Also, be on the lookout for Modern Warfare 2. And it may have dropped in price by a huge amount, so Battlefield: Bad Company.
The orange box (although originaly being 30$) and battlefeild bad company were recently made part of the platinum hits collection so they're both 20$ now and i would strongly recomend them both.

Fable II and Mass Effect are definitely both worth getting. Great RPGs, lot of fun.

Beautiful Katamari is a good game for simplicity. It sounds lame but seriously give it a chance.

FEAR is a must have. Atmospheric and just intense. In some ways primitive, but a definite must play experience.

Halo 3 ODST if you're enjoying Halo 3 is another recommendation. ODST's campaign is damn fun (despite how short it is), firefight in my opinion kicks the crap out of CoD World at War's Nazi Zombie mode, and on a 2nd disc included you get Halo 3 multiplayer with every single map included including the DLC maps.

Ninja Gaiden II... brilliant hack 'n' slash, lot of people say it's too hard, I say it's the type of game that we've needed for a long time to combat the repetitive trend of brown/grey shooters.

Arcade games I'd recommend: Ikaruga, Triggerheart Exelica, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Crystal Defenders, and Outrun Live Arcade.

@Sci-Fi luver437 I got the elite, after the price drop, with a 50 buck off rebate. I say I lucked out. Couldn't find the one with the two bonus games though, so I missed out on lego batman and pray.
Dang... I'm gonna need to find a job to play all these games. I'm broke after buying the system, halo 3, and xbox live for a year.

Actually, I'd advise against GoW unless you like only seeing the dirt spectrum.

As for halo3, go play through campaign until you can go through it on at least heroic. Then try ranked free for all or ranked teams to sharpen your skills. You'll probably learn a lot of tricks from that, but it'll take a lot of matches. Social isn't quite as much fun anymore since they introduced the exp ranking. brigadiers against noobs isn't a fair fight. Teams are so unbalanced still.

I reccomend CoD4, which is, and isn't like halo. Just as awesome though.

Ninja Gaiden 2

The orange box was okay- team fortress 2 is fun after a while...

If you can save your pennies, I think the next 6 months of 360 games have a good chance of being the best yet.

MW2, Forza 3, Mass Effect 2, etc. etc. Awesome.

if you're willing to go for downloadable games, I'd recommend Battlefield 1943 and Shadow Complex

I own a crapload of consoles and I can say in all honesty I like the Xbox 360 the best. And it pains me to say it because the Dreamcast was for a long time the apple of my eye, but now the 360 has trumped it.

I'd buy Dead Space if you want a scary game, Mass Effect for a good RPG (Also look out for Dragon Age: Origins when it comes out next month, and the sequel in December), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (And Modern Warfare 2 also coming out next month) GET BIOSHOCK! NUFF SAID!, Left 4 Dead is a fun party game (Left 4 Dead 2 is coming out soon as well, so you might want to hold off) Batman: Arkham Asylum is also a great game.

I think that is just it for some need to buy games (Well not need to buy, but some good games in general that are already out, so don't get at me for not saying a game that hasn't come out yet)

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion because it looks good and has a good story as well as providing several hours of play.

Bioshock offers similar reasons but has a different setting in case high fantasy isn't your cup of tea.

You may want to save up a bit for some of the new games coming out. There are several likely candidates about to be released over the next 2 years. I think you will be pleasantly surprised and you won't regret your decision to get the 360 as they come out.

What can I say that hasn't been said before?

Halo Series is good if your into that sorta thing, same can be said about Gears of War. The Orange Box is a must have, even if you only get it for portal. Burnout Paradise is good if your into driving games. Left 4 Dead is also a great buy, but you might want to wait for Left 4 Dead 2. Guitar Hero / Rock Band is another suggestion, but you will have to pay a bit for all the controllers.

Other random ones I can think of are Unreal 3, Dead Rising, GTA4 or Saints Row 2 (no reason to get both), Mirrors Edge, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Batman AA, Mass Effect, Dead space, Bioshock, Resident Evil 5, and both of the latest COD games.

Also, for XBLA, Shadow Complex will bring back wonderful memories if you played the original metroid series. And Castle Crashers its great if you can get 4 of your mates together and play. Playing it online tends to lag a lot.

Edit: Always try to buy used, no real reason to pay an extra 10$ to get it wrapped and new.
