I'm not a mega fan, but I have to say that Lauren Faust really succeeded at breathing new life into what I thought was a pretty lame franchise. It's one of those rare "Girl" shows I'd actually feel okay letting my (future) daughter watch.

Besides the movie when I was little, I never watched any My Little Pony. I completely wrote it of as a show for little girls to get them to buy toys. Apparently from the other comments, I wasn't far off.

Don't touch anything before G4 MLP. For the sake of your unborn children and your own life DON'T. I can't stress this enough. Just stick to MLP FIM and the good times can keep rollin'.

Pandering cash-grabbing girly fluff with nothing to offer in return.

One of the reasons why I think Friendship is Magic is so amazing is because it took what was once this messy abhorrent thing and turned it into something amusing and fun for boys and girls of all ages with good animation and production all around. Quality where there once was none.

Also, I don't hang out with the Friendship is Magic fanbase. And I'm a 20-year-old girl who never liked girly shows, but has found a lot in FIM to relate to. Perhaps that's why watching it just outs me in the most optimistic mood... That people understand that a cartoon can be appealing to everyone through good writing and execution... That kids are capable of complex thought and are to be respected by their entertainment, and people of all ages can feel just as respected... Just talking about it puts me in the most optimistic mood as an artist and caretaker in the works...

Only started watching it recently. I never liked the show as a kid, but I had a MASSIVE collection of the dolls.

MLP: FiM not only looks a hell of a lot better than past generation (they were fugly as hell) but FiM makes a lot of pop culture references which add to the enjoyment such as:

Apocalypse Now (Ep: 4 when after a rabbit stampede a pony says "The horror. The horror.")

LotR (Ep:19 A gollum-esque character saying "I must get the preciouses." and more)

Alice in Wonderland (Ep: 22 when Fluttershy's rabbit was holding a watch and reminded Fluttershy that she is "Late for a very important date.")

And many more references. Plus it WAS made by Lauren Faust who did Power Puff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and those were awesome shows! She carried over the humor and quirkiness of them to MLP :D

FiM is proof that NO franchise is truly "dead", because you can always get a skilled and passionate team to "rez" it.....

I tried watching the very first episode (it was called "Battle at Midnight Castle" or something equally promising) but I didn't even make it through the opening credits. When it comes to mass appeal, it was no She-ra - Princess of Power.

If i think real hard i vaguely recall something about seaponies and a lot of shoo-be-doo but other than that i don't really remember my prior experience with the ponies.

Of course not. I wouldn't even have watched FiM if so many Escapists hadn't said it was great.

And if any FiM fans wander in who aren't in the usergroup yet:

Meh, I just apathetic to it in general...most of the fans seem to like it ironically though so its always kinda turned me off to it.

Then again, I've only watched like five minutes of one episode, if someone could provide a link to a complete list of episodes I'd probably go check it out. (and yes, I am that lazy...
"Ironically"? Not that I'm aware of. You don't create so much art and fanfiction about a show you only like ironically.

And this guy has all the episodes on his channel

I avoided My Little Pony like the plague. Up until I heard how good FiM was anyway.

Pfft, I liked my Friendship is Magic before it was cool. You know, back when it was underground and no one had heard of it.

I knew of My Little Pony before FIM came along from toy commercials but I thought it was just stupid girly junk. I didn't even change my mind until I saw the huge numbers of people on the escapist say how good it was. I watched the first episode and my mind was blown! I loved the show and learned not to judge tv shows just because of their target demographic. So yeah, not until FIM did I take notice of the series.

The sea ponies are not in FiM, which I think pretty much everyone agrees is a good thing.
