So I was thinking, Are all these natural disasters a lead-up to the climatic 2012 end of the world or are they just a series of tragic events with no relation?

If it is the end of the world, how do you think it will go down. Like the movie 2012 or something more like aliens or zombies?

In the beginning the Earth was nothing more than a barren, smoldering rock, and in the end it will probably become so again once the sun starts to enter its last phases of life, barring us nuking ourselves a thousand times over or something huge crashing into our planet first.

But seeing how all of these options are either very unlikely to happen or would first happen billions of years down the road from now, it's not so fun to speculate about as "OMG THE MAYAN CALENDAR ENDS IN 2012 SURELY THIS MUST MEAN SOMETHING IMPORTANT GUISE!!!11".

Always have happened and always will. The Earth goes through ice ages and gets hit by meteorites and the circumstances on its surface change.

Maybe something will happen to wipe us out, but it will be just as natural and random. All predictions except scientific ones with real proof mean absolutely nothing.

What a lot of people fail to realize is that there aren't more large-scale disasters happening, they are simply happening in more populated areas. That's what happens when the planets human population goes from 1.5 billion to 7.5 billion in 150 years. Humans spread out and we don't always pick the best location to build a city, either out of ignorance or arrogance.

I like both of the quoted comments here.

Honestly, I think this guy:

Is spot on. The world is a big place, and large human settlements aren't the norm when you look at the vast expanses of our planet. The recent tsunami isn't even that shocking. That big of an earthquake will cause some crazy Vatican assassin waves, and if it's in the pacific, it has the coastlines of tons of countries to hit. Japan got really unlucky, but it's not geographically surprising.

You know this kinds of disaster have always happened and with the same frequency the only differences are that now the world has tons of more heavily populated areas and that now we have all this massive systems of communication that can make the information available to the world in a matter of minutes instead of days or even months as it was before, thus creating the illusion that now there are more disasters, besides in the old days you did not have videos on youtube about the disasters that just occurred.

I put "not sure" (first one to do it) but that doesn't mean I'm backing an end of the world scenario.

I've occasionally make a few comments about the 2012 thing, because honestly this is uncanny. On the other hand that general "prophecy" makes little sense, especially considering it's origins. Not so much because of the comments on them deciding to simply end the calander in an odd place, but because I can't see many scenarios in which the Mayans could have come upon this knowlege that would have totally eluded modern man. It's a similar situation to other doomsday prophecies and the general lack of reliable information or a consistant chain of sources, etc... even if your unusually open minded.

That said, there are other options. There is what Robert Heinlan referred to as "X weapons". X simply standing for "unknown" with the catagory referring to weaponry that goverments hold back or don't reveal to the public until needed. Nuclear weapons have been around for decades, yet we haven't see any serious next generation weapons despite billions of dollars being spent on the militay technologies of most first world nations.

The idea of ecological warfare has been around for a very long time, ranging from studies by the Russians about forcing large scale changes through finding ways to divert, plug up, or literally vapourize entire rivers, to various science fiction weapons.

It honestly doesn't strike me as being *totally* ridiculous that some of this *could* be various goverments F@cking around. Tests and countertests of weapons without the public being aware of it in general.

It's interesting to note that two of the most major hits recently have been areas that are very signifigant to the US if an East Vs. West war was to break out, at a time when deny it as much as you want, tension between China and the US have ben fairly high. Japan is pretty much under US occupation and plays host to a massive portion of the US Navy, and Australia is well known to be a US ally and presents a rather annoying obstacle if such a conflict was to break out.

We don't know the placement of all the resources of various nations, or without a doubt who is whose ally, place host to what bases, or whatever else. It's always possible we're looking at some rather extreme back and forth between say the US and China using enviromental warfare without either side informing the general public or issueing a declaration of war.

Granted this is unlikely (so don't misinterpet it) I'm just saying there are plenty of odd theories out there short of "OMG it's the apocolypse" and the more stuff that happens, the more uncanny it seems to be. Sure it could all be natural phenomena, and that's the most sane and likely answer, but to be honest as more and more stuff happens it becomes increasingly dificult to dismiss it, and to think there is some kind of pattern or common thread that we just aren't seeing.

Time will tell if nothing else will.

People have been predicting an imminent end of the world since practically the beginning of recorded history. It hasn't happened yet, and I'm sure it won't happen in 2012. I think the reason why these predictions crop up in the first place is because people get a kind of power trip out of it. They want to feel special and different from past generations, so they latch onto these theories because they want to feel cool, being the last people on earth and all.

Also, the earth has weathered far worse catastrophes than what is occurring right now. It just seems worse due to how many people are around. When you've got a world population of about 7 billion people, it's probably a safe bet that any large-scale disaster is going to result in a high death rate. It's unfortunate and tragic to be sure, but there's only so much that can be done to prevent it. Also, we get far better coverage of these events than previous generations have, thanks to the internet and other modern communications devices.

People are always seeing patterns regardless of whether or not they're actually there. It's human nature.

Even if the Myan calendar did end in 2012 (I read somewhere that number is wrong) I'm still convinced the calendar maker dude just said "You know what? I'm done for the next 6000 (or whatever) years, I'll take a break." And just never got back around to it.

Both these people stole my ideas are completely correct. If humans looked at the actual evidence first instead of making wild, baseless accusations these idiotic rantings wouldn't have any support. But we aren't exactly known for our rationality.

Natural disasters are just that - natural disasters. I've always found one particular point of view to be interesting on this subject.

I voted "We're doomed, start stocking up now", but I don't believe for a second that 'stocking up' will help.

what people also fail to realise is that if it really is the end of the world there aint a damn thing u could do about it so u might as well sit back n let it happen
